Review: When first released--even in the era of "free love"--PAINT YOUR WAGON raised eyebrows. A major studio releasing a big budget musical about an immoral California mining town where two men are married to the same woman? How gosh!Cast aside any moral timidity and simply have fun watching this entertaining, rowdy film. Lee Marvin is a hoot as drunken, pretentious Ben Rumson--Clint Eastwood totally in over his head as the more down-to-earth 'Pardner.' Both actors share some memorable moments as they "partner up" on everything they own: including Ben's wife, Elizabeth (Jean Seberg, whose untimely death following the film's release was indeed tragic). The supporting cast, including Ray Walston and Tom Ligon, is outstanding; the "music"--if you can call it that--is uneven and very forgettable (with the glowing exception of "They Call the Wind Maria," sung by Harve Presnell). From brothels to bulls and bears, from gold dust to greed and lust, pull up a chair and let PAINT YOUR WAGON haul you away to No Name City.

Review: This movie is a lot of frolicking fun, and was one of the most expensive musicals made in the 1960s. The characters are all "characters", especially Lee Marvin's. The music is dated but, good; and like a musical is supposed to do, keeps the story moving. Enjoy!!

Review: PAINT YOUR WAGON is a movie about two nineteenth century California gold prospectors in a town where there is a shortage of respectable women. This sad situation forces Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood into an awkward sharing arrangement with Jean Seberg. The most memorable scene in the film by far is the marriage ceremony of Marvin and Seberg.A strong supporting cast includes Harve Presnell, Ray Walston and John Mitchum. The movie was an adaptation of a Lerner-Loewe Broadway musical and it received an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Music Score. The actors did their own singing which was surprisingly pleasant. The main competition for Oscars in 1969 came from MIDNIGHT COWBOY, TRUE GRIT and THE PRIME OF MISS JEAN BRODIE.

Review: This was one of the best musical comedies I have ever seen in my life. That's not that great to say though, considering I have only seen one. Clint Eastwood did pretty good, Lee Marvin did okay, and Jean Seberg was good for a beginner.

Review: Eastwood himself admitted that this was a failed effort. 'the studios can make you look like a real fool if they want to.' This is the film that convinced Eastwood to start his own production company. In fact, one movie later, he never worked for anyone else again. This movie is painfully boring. There are only two scenes of him singing that are nice to see, but they are really brief. I need to save innocents from seing this film!

Summary: "Pardner" and Ben and Elizabeth Make Three!
Review: This review refers to the Paramount "Widescreen Collection" DVD Edition of "Paint Your Wagon".... In the gold-mining town of "No Name City"(Clint gets a name in this one but the town doesn't),Ben Rumson(Lee Marvin) and "Pardner"(Clint Eastwood)have a 50/50 relationship all the way. They split the gold they find, they pay each other's debt's off, and pick each other up from druken stupors. Pardner seems to be doing most of the work on that end of things though! The town is filled with burly men, who haven't seen a woman in quite a while...That is until some Morman's come to town. The husband has one more wife than he needs and auctions Elizabeth(Jean Seberg) off to the men. The winner? Ben Rumson of course. But partners share everything you know...so Ben, Pardner, and Elizabeth become a trio.They just seem to fit right into this town without scruples. The raucous action, the laughs and the wonderful music by Lerner and Lowe,Andre Previn, and even the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, are non-stop.There's the kidnapping of prostitutes to "improve" the town,a scheme hatched to collect lost gold,and a religious family comes to town that leads to some hilarious situations, and may change the whole atmosphere of the bawdy town.Some of the marvelous songs you'll be treated to(and may be humming for a couple of days after) are "Paint Your Wagon","No Name City", "I Talk to The Trees"(sung by none other then Eastwood himself), and "Born Under a Wandrin Star"(sung by Marvin)...Okay so Clint and Lee's vocal stylings are not my reason for giving 5 stars to this film!But you will be mesmerized by Harve Presnell's beautiful rendition of "They Call the Wind Mariah"! The cast is as marvelous as the music and the story.In addition to the actors mentioned above you'll also find Ray Walston and Paula Trueman(Outlaw Josey Wales). It was expertly directed by Joshua Logan(Camelot/South Pacific). The cinematography is gorgeous and is also a big part of the story.Although the film runs 2:40, I barely knew the time had past. It was just too much fun! It's a great DVD. This film was released in 1969 and looks fabulous. Beautiful colors and a sharp, clear picture in widescreen are a joy to watch. There are no "special features" as far as interviews or documentaries but you have the choice of 5.1 Surround or stereo surround. The music and dialouge are perfect.There's even the original intermission with a medley of the songs. There are also Subtitles in English for hearing impaired viewers. These are great, they are in the black bar area and do not interfere with the picture, They denote when a song is playing, and even tell you the language that the song is being sung in.(The opening song is sung in many different languages, as many of the miners are immigrants)It may also be viewed in French(mono), and there is a Theatrical Trailer. Want to know what Clint's name really is in this one? You have to stay to the end to find out(sorry, they said "No Spoilers!) Have fun with this one.....Laurie

Summary: A Rip-Roarin' Good Time
Review: I first saw this movie in 1970 on the recommendation of a friend. When my date and I (I was 19 then)were already in the theatre, only then did I learn that it was a (ugh!)musical! Boy, was I going to have to struggle to get through that evening! But by the end of the movie I was absolutely mesmerized! This movie now holds my all-time record for attendance, as I saw it no less than 7 times in the movie theatre and countless times on video. The music is great (although Clint Eastwood singing is probably a little "light") and the songs are very well suited to the plot. This is a great movie for guys who like "women and whisky, night and day." Not to mention gambling, rough and rumble, the great outdoors and, of course, not bathing. But women find this movie just as fun-filled as do the men. The great thing about the DVD is that it is far superior to the VHS version which clipped out the sides of the widescreen. Buy it, watch it and love it! You can't go wrong with this one!

Review: This movie kicks some serious bum - I mean, Clint Eastwood singing, what more must I say? This is an incredible Western with a great storyline and gorgeous music. If you haven't seen it, you MUST. It rocks.

Summary: Have yourself a time....
Review: When I was 7 years old my Grandmother took my cousin and I to see this picture because our parents had already seen the movie and bought the soundtrack and we already knew all the songs. Our Mom's and Dad's raved about it to their friends while they thought we were asleep. We had talked Little Granny (as we called her) into taking us. She was a fine upstanding community leader; and she was absolutely mortified when she saw this film.
She kept saying that she hoped no one in the theater recognized her...THEY DID!!! But my cousin and I loved it. It was rowdy and funny and lyrical and turned us both into Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood fans for life.
Now, if you live in the Bible Belt, as we do and you go to church regularly, as we have all our lives, you will find the whole thing unsuitable for young children. For years I would tell my friends that "Paint Your Wagon" is my family's only vice. We can't help ourselves...We, as a family still watch it and enjoy every frame of this picture. We laugh and sing along with the songs and my dad still sings "I was born under a wanderin' star" when he's driving.
I measure all comedies by this one movie. My husband had never heard of "Paint Your Wagon" until he met me...It's his favorite movie, now. I have shown it to anyone who'll watch it. I might also add that this is the movie that got me interested in American History (I was a history major in college). I would not call this a true western, however. It's about gold miners and the gold mining towns. But, it's true to gold mining history in this country and there is more sin in 5 minutes of this movie than any musical I've ever seen. So, put the youngun's in bed and put this movie on and HAVE YOURSELF A TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
