Summary: BRILLIANT! FUNNY! CHARMING! A GREAT MUSICAL!
Review: I first saw HELLO, DOLLY! when I was sick, and no matter how silly this may sound, it really did just cheer me up. Although a bit silly at times, this movie will have you ready to get up and dance! The characters are sometimes ridiculous, but quite lovable, and Barbara Streisand plays a wonderful, bubbly Dolly Levi who wants you to "just leave everything to me!" The energy and enthusiasm put into this movie is contagious, and will leave you feeling happy. (silly though it sounds, it's true!) The songs are wonderful, and the dancing marvelous. Look for guest Louis Armstrong who directs the band that plays the title song HELLO, DOLLY! A great movie! I highly recommend this for a few laughs!

Summary: Funny and Charming
Review: I loved Hello Dolly! Barbara did a fantastic job. But I'd have to disagree with a viewer from Drexel Hill,PA. Tommy Tune never worked for Hoarce, it was indeed played by Micheal Crawford, as the tallest of the two workers. Tommy Tune played the love interest of the niece. The music and dancing was awesome.

Summary: A wonderful uplifting film for anyone who loves musicals!
Review: I loved the movie; however, I have to correct the viewer from Bay Area, California who submitted the last review. Taller of the two men who worked for Mr. Vandergelder was not Michael Crawford, it was Tommy Tune. Crawford played the shorter of the two.

Summary: Barbra is more believable than Carol Channing as Dolly
Review: If you like musicals, be sure to watch this one! Barbra Streisand is pretty gushy as Dolly Levy, but SO likeable!! Some of Dolly's one-liners have stayed with me for years. Until recently, I didn't know that the taller of the two boys who worked for Horrace VanDerGelder is THE Michael Crawford--of Phantom of the Opera fame!!!! Great cast and great fun in this movie. (The only reason I gave it 4-stars is that I felt the movie was a little too long)

Summary: Elephantitis
Review: Thornton Wilder's modest little play "The Matchmaker" has been blown up as big as a zeppelin in this out-of-control Streisand vehicle. A couple of songs had been added in the original musical conversion of the play on Broadway but this Hollywood monstrosity was never on Wilder's drawing board. The play had in fact been filmed ten years earlier with Shirley Booth, Paul Ford, Anthony Perkins and Shirley MacLaine in the leads. They should have left it at that. The original point of the story of the middle-aged Dolly Levi's pursuit of Horace Vander Geller is swallowed up here by the vast sets (the New York street set was one of the largest ever constructed and was forbidden to Paul Newman for "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" for fear "Butch" would reach the theaters before "Dolly") and interminable and generally idiotic production numbers. This must be some of the worst dancing ever filmed. Hard to believe a couple of Hollywood veterans like Gene Kelly and Ernest Lehman rode herd on this fiasco.

Summary: Say "Hello" to this Great Looking DVD!
Review: "Hello Dolly!" is the elphantine musical film based on the long running stage play that in 1969 failed miserably to find its audience at the the box office. Directed by legendary song and dance man, Gene Kelly and featuring the meticulous choreography of Gower Champion, this is a big, brassy, spectacular production, the likes of which we aren't likely to ever see again. Barbra Streisand plays Dolly Levi, a matchmaker whose heart is set on landing stuffy hay and feed owner, Horace Vandergelder (Walter Matthau). The off camera bickering between the two co-stars may have been legendary, but none of it shows up on the screen. Streisand and Matthau are ably assisted by Marianne McAndrews, Michael Crawford, Tommy Tune and the incomparable, Louis Armstrong. Removed from all the angst, hype and negative publicity that branded musicals box office poison from about 1959 onward, "Hello Dolly!" emerges as one of the best of the genre, an outstanding, tune filled epic production that never fails to entertain!
FOX VIDEO has given us a handsome looking DVD. Colors are rich, bold, vibrant and extremely well balanced. Black and contrast levels are only slightly on the weak side but adjusting one's television contrast and brightness fixes this right up. There is NO EDGE ENHANCEMENT, ALIASING or PIXELIZATION or FILM GRAIN or AGE RELATED ARTIFACTS for a visual presentation that is as smooth as the plot. The soundtrack has been remixed to 5.1 surround but suffers slightly from a muffled characteristic, perhaps because of noise reduction equipment used in the remastering effort. Still, most of the film has a crisp, clean and not overly bright sound to it that, while dated, nevertheless is easy on the ears.
EXTRAS: A Theatrical Trailer. That's it.
BOTTOM LINE: I should fault Fox for given us no extras but with the film looking as though it were shot last week I have to stop myself and just proclaim, "Well done!" An absolute must for your DVD library!

Summary: Stunningly Streisand
Review: Everytime I watch this movie, I am amazed at the superb quality of Barbra's voice. At only twenty seven she is a real treasure. For anyone who loves Barbra - what can I say? It is definantly a gorgeous young woman who steals the stage time and time again on this merry romp.
Not at all like Carol Channing, Striesand adds a sexy new dimension to Dolly. Everyone seems to fit together beautifully, though I was dissappointed to learn about the tension and hatred between Mathhau and Striesand. (The smiles seem to forced at the very end, when Matthau is singing to her.) If you want a young, talented and Vivacious Barbra - look no more.

Summary: Hello Dolly for Romantics
Review: Some people may not care for "Hello Dolly", but I think it is one of the greatest musicals of all time and is in my top ten list, if not my top five. Barbra Stresisand is perfect as Dolly, bringing life and vitality to the character, as well as her beautiful singing voice. Michael Crawford is excellent as Cornelius Hackl. He's funny, charming and thoroughly believable. Walter Matthau is great as a grumbling Horace Vandergelder. Louis Armstrong adds his magic to the movie with his personality and his version of the title song. The costumes are wonderful, the scenery is too. The music gets under your skin and is very catchy and can easily be sung along to. I find this a idyllic idea of life at the turn of the century, a romantic view that all romantics would want to see. If you enjoy Barbra Streisand, Walter Matthau, Michael Crawford, or just musicals in general this is a must see!
