Rating: Summary: Movie 5 ---- DVD Sound - Zero Review: This isn't my favorite but i still enjoy it everytime i watch it with friends and family. I've had the VHS version for years and the stereo sound was really good for VHS. But the DVD version for the sound is terrible. It states that it is 5.1. This is a lie! I'm a nut when it comes to sound and i'm not trying to brag but i have a THX system which is in my estimation the top of the line and pretty much the best that money can buy if your crazy enough to want to purchase one,,,anyhow, i digress. The sound is weak and there really isn't any separation and this movie wasn't enhanced for stereo but was actually filmed in stereo, four channel magetic to be exact. What was the studio thinking when they transferred this to DVD? I was extremely disappointed. Everything comes from the center channel with some surround from the rear. The sub woofer, left and right channels are just about noticeable. TERRIBLE JOB! They should be made to do it over until they get it right.
Rating: Summary: No No No!! Wait for the Special Edition! Review: The movie gets a five, but the package gets a zero in this cheap-o DVD edition. We know there are out-takes (an entire number by Reynolds) and we know there are other materials out there (you can find them on the anniversary VHS edition) but some chintsy exec at MGM gave us zip zero nada on this DVD version!Yes, this IS the greatest movie musical of all time, bar none. It deserves top drawer treatment, and not the kind of packaging usually reserved for bargain B movies. Shame on MGM. Shame shame shame! Do not settle for this bottom-of-the-line package. Hold out for a special edition of this American gem!
Rating: Summary: The Greates of So many Things Review: It's the greatest musical movie of all time. It's the greatest movie soundtrack of all time. It's Gene Kelly's best performance and Donald O'Connor's break out and best performance. I love this movie, in part because I recently played Don Lockwood on the stage. It was the most fun I have ever had. It is one hell of a fun movie, one of the most romantic movies of all time, one of the just plain greatest stories and bar none one of the five funniest films of all time. Don't just get this DVD or the video, but please, do yourself a favor and get the CD soundtrack and listen to it when you can't watch the movie. You'll be all the better for it.
Rating: Summary: Singin' In The Rain is great Review: Next to An American in Paris and Meet Me in St. Louis (which I am dying to see), this is one of my favorite movie musicals. Gene Kelly gave one of the greatest performances of his life. I was first introduced to this musical by way of the Great Movie Ride at the MGM theme park in Disney World. It's the first thing you see as the ride starts. Then, I started singing it in my music class. Then, I saw a diaper commercial of a baby dancing in the rain to the recording of the song that obviously recorded by Gene Kelly. Then, in my third year at theatre camp, the tap class performed the number wearing ponchos and hats. They even had the number itself projected on a video screen. Actually the video itself was on mute and they were dancing to a recording. I knew I was in love with this musical. Then, I saw snippets on That's Entertainment and That's Entertainment Part II. I'm not sure if there were snippets of the musical in That's Entertainment III. When I bought this musical on DVD, I was shocked that there were 60 chapters. I watched it first on my computer because my parents were watching the Boston Pops' 4th of July concert downstairs. When I saw the movie sequence, even I thought that Lina had a lovely voice that matched her personality onscreen. Then, when she first spoke, I thought, "Oh my God, no wonder Don was upstaging her." Donald O'Connor was very funny. His song, Make 'Em Laugh, was a celebration of how important comic relief is. I loved the part when he started singing, "Oh my little mammy/Down in Alabammy". I loved the flashback scene when Don was telling the story of his life. He was lying through his teeth, baby. Debbie Reynolds has become quite a star. She even sang Singin' In the Rain at last year's Boston Pops 4th of July concert and she was great. These days, she's doing the voice of Lulu, Granpa Lou's new wife, on Rugrats. I thought it was a little gross that they mixed milk with water to create the rain effect. I'll admit that it did make the rain look more visible but Gene Kelly must have had to take a long shower especially after the shot where he looks up and water pours on his face. Good thing they'll never actually invent Smell-O-Vision. This musical is wonderful. Practically all of the main characters get to sing except for Dexter, the director. Lina becomes a real villain towards the end. Buy the DVD and you will thank me.
Rating: Summary: My (shamefully) edited review... Review: I'm now giving this DVD 5 stars because I discovered that it wasn't a bad quality DVD; it was my my DVD to V.C.R. hook-up that caused the problems. So kids, if you've had the same problems with the quality of your DVD viewing as I've described below, try hooking your DVD player either to a newer V.C.R. or directly to the T.V. So now allow me to apologize for my original review, and do purchase this DVD. I'm giving this dvd 3 stars not because of the content of the movie but because of the quality of the dvd. Singin' in the Rain is a wonderful movie: very fun, very light-hearted, very good acting, singing, dancing, etc. But everybody knows that. What they don't know is that the quality of the dvd is very bad. In small print on the back of the box it says: "Standard version- presented in a format preserving the aspect ratio of its original theatrical exhibition." Which must mean that the DVD is supposed to run blurry and dark. Every 10 seconds or so the color lightens up and straightens out enough to see what's going on, but that only lasts for a second or two and then it goes back to blurry and dark. For me, watching this dvd was a practice in frustration. I LOVE this movie. It's too bad that the quality of the dvd is so bad. If you're going to buy this movie, (and you should because it's fabulous) buy it on VHS and save yourself the disappointment.
Rating: Summary: The greatest musical EVER!!! Review: I absolutely LOVE this movie!!! I'm not one to like musicals, but this is one of the few exceptions I have. This should have been AFI's #1. My favorite number has to be Good Mornin'. Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor, and Debbie Reynolds make dancing look easy. They look like they're actually having fun making the film. The work that went into it doesn't even show on screen. It looks like they just made up the moves as they went along. Donald O'Connor gives a brilliant performance in Make 'Em Laugh. Story has it that he was in bed for 3 days recuperating after he filmed that scene--no wonder. But he also made it look effortless. I wish they made films like this today. Unfortunately, all the class has died with Hollywood's best stars. I have to tape these old films off TV or buy them. I wish I had seen this one in the theater. But in 1952, my parents were only kids. Sometimes I hate being only 21. I don't have any memories of going to the theater and seeing a really great film. I must have watched this film a million times. If you haven't seen it, get some popcorn, get the kids (they'll love it-at least my 8 year old niece does) and WATCH IT!!!!!

Rating: Summary: Wonderful... Review: This movie brings back the golden age of musicals. A comedic look at the 1920's cross from silent movies to talking pictures. The songs are awesome. Hearing Gene (Don Lockwood) sing that "You Were Meant for Me" song would just melt your heart! The song "Make 'em Laugh" (that wasn't even supposed to be in the movie!) is wonderful! If you don't remember anything about the movie (which who could forget any of it?) you always remember Donald O'Conner going through that wall. Debbie Reynolds is not a dancer, but you couldn't tell in this movie. They're voices were strong and beautiful together. Even when they're not together. "Fit as a Fiddle" is a great song, makes me wish I knew how to tap. Gene Kelly fans, Debbie Reynolds fans and Donald O'Conner fans alike should all watch this superb movie.
Rating: Summary: The Perfect Picture Review: Perhaps Singin' in the Rain is as flawless as it is possible for a movie to be. It is difficult to find fault with what has been called the greatest movie musical of all time. Being written straight for the screen, it is not hampered by the stagey feel that marrs so many film musicals. On the contrary, it is brilliantly cinematic. The cinematography is fluid, enchanting, and memorable; the choreography, impressive and captivating; the musical numbers, exciting; the cast, rarely bettered; and the screenplay, witty and charming. The story takes an introspective and satirical look at Hollywood during the late '20s, the genesis of the sound era. It provides us with an often hilarious snapshot of the studios during a time of change. Singin' in the Rain never runs out of steam; it might be a manual on how to make a film. Pure entertainment.
