Review: I cam into Jesus Christ Superstar a cynic. I saw clips of the show on TV and thought to myself, "Oh my! What screeching! I wouldn't watch this show for fear of brain hemmorhaging!" Oh my! How wrong I was! My boyfriend bought the DVD and I sulked on the couch. He inserted the disk and from the first chords I was hooked! Never have I been so mesmorized by a movie! The set is faboo! I'm thinking about writing "liberte'" on my bedroom wall now!... kidding. The acting is also quite delightful. Jerome Pradon's Judas was by far my favorite character! What dimension! Lordy Lordy! Anyway, get this DVD! You will be far from disappointed!

Summary: The Best DVD Ever!
Review: Having seen the original film over they years I eagerly awaited the release of the new film version and I was certaiinly not disappointed it is absolutely FANTASTIC!!! Glenn carter gives the best portrayal of Christ that I have ever seen. The passion and the emotion that he puts into the role is a sight to behold. The interaction between Glenn and Jerome Pradon (Judas) is just amazing especaially at the last supper. The rest of the cast are equally amazing Fred Johanson (Pilate) gives an outstanding performance. I loved Frederick B Owens (Caiaphas) voice it is so rich and deep. Michael Schaeffer (Annas) was also outstanding. I would recommend this dvd to everyone it is just so amazing. Thank you glenn and the rest of the cast for giving us such an outstanding performances.

Summary: Good, but not great
Review: I enjoyed this video, but I still prefer the 1973 movie. Maybe it's because I have seen it so much and when I think of the songs and characters, those are the ones I think of. Overall, though, I enjoyed this production and am glad I bought it. My biggest problem with both versions, however, is the fact that they end with the crucifixion. Jesus rose from the dead. Why isn't this displayed. This alone ruins both productions for me.

Summary: Sorry...unimpressed!
Review: I was disappointed. Admittedly, I am *quite* attached to the original soundtrack with Ted Neely and Carl Anderson. However, I have seen several modern stage adaptations of JCS and wholeheartedly enjoyed each one. This is the first version I did not like. I felt that "Judas" lost a lot of his complexity of character to anger and sneering. Indeed I thought anger throughout the piece was overstated, drowning a lot of the subltelties and depths of the relationships portrayed. To me, "Jesus" lacked strength and credibility. While it could have been nice to see a little more reactivity than Ted Neely showed under Jewison's direction, Carter was too transparent and sacrificed charisma and leadership. I doubted that his personality could mobilize such a following as Jesus' actually did. Jesus, I believe, had his weaknesses, but Carter's Jesus had little else. Other reviewers mention being moved to tears, but my viewing of this video marked the first time I've watched the musical dry-eyed!Further, I did not find that the mood and costumes reflected our millenial times; they seemed to me already passe and evoked something of Michael Jackson's Beat It / Thriller era. On the positive side, I did enjoy "Mary Magdalene" and thought "Simon" gave a wonderful show.

Review: I never wrote any review on amazon until now, so this alone tells how much I enjoyed this DVD. I'm a big fan of Jesus Christ Superstar. I have seen 24 stage performances from all different productions in Asia, Europe and US. I also have 70's movie version with Ted Neely. And yet, this version is the "Best" Jesus Christ Superstar I've ever experienced with!! To make this review short, I would recommend reading Liz Kinver's review, "Wow! What inspiration!" Make sure you buy DVD format because you'll watch it over & over & over & over again!!

Summary: Could Have Been Much, Much Better
Review: The new movie is very disappointing. It isn't as thoughtful, interesting, or intelligent as the music that it is set to. Gale Edwards, the director and brains behind the film obviously doesn't have a clue about what real drama is, for she views it as clueless expressions on Glenn Carter's blanked face. Speaking of which, Glenn Carter as Jesus Christ, has a great voice and a nice chiseled chin, but he plays the role with little emotional depth. An example of this is in the "Arrest," when Peter and the rest of the apostles say "hang on lord we're gonna' fight for you," and he says "stick to fishing for now on" sweetly, without the sarcasm and irony that was intended. There are no locations, so it is just a filmed play, with the same drab sets in almost every scene. I wonder why they bothered filming this, when they could have just filmed a performance of the Broadway revival. The 1973 film has a lot more thought and better performances. Jerome Pradon as Judas is the only true professional; he sings and acts the part with as much intelligence and expertise that the rest of the film so desperately needs. All in all, I think JCS fans should see this, but don't count on not being disappointed.

Summary: Super Superstar!
Review: As a Catholic, I was worried about the true content of the story. I have to admit that certain parts of the musical are a bit disturbing. I was very uncomfortable with the relationship between Jesus and Mary Magdaline. It was diffucult to see Jesus being kissed and stroked by a prostitute. Furthermore, to see Jesus in a tank-top and cargo pants was hard to swallow. Some parts of the movie make you uncomfortable, and yet some parts will drive you to tears. The music is among the best that Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber has ever written. The entire ending of the story is based upon Jesus' death. If you have never seen Jesus die in a movie before, this picture will make you realize the enormous amout of pain that Jesus went through for the sake of man. You will ache with pain for days. Seeing Jesus denied, betrayed, flogged, and then crucified will bring you to your knees and then slap you in the face. You will see what the King of Kings suffered for everyone. Many people who are unfamiliar with the film love the song "Jesus Christ Superstar". I assure you that when you see this film, you will cry during the entire number. Although it is upbeat, it is at the same time the most heart-wrenching scene you will ever experience. You become Jesus and you are the one being crucified! Everyone in the film is making fun of you! Do not let your children watch this film. The death of Christ is very graphic. True Christians will be very uncomfortable, but very inspired. It may not be the true story, but you will realize what Christ went through to save you! Superstar Rocks! (Uncomfortably, but in no doubt!)

Summary: Awesome Production!
Review: I am a huge JCS fan. I must say this was a wonderful production of it. Glen Carter's Jesus was wonderful. Jerome Pradon's Judas i have mixed feelings about. Pradon's acting was fabulous! I did not like his singing though. It made for a whiney Judas. Frederrick Owens' Caiaphus was very good. Annas was one of the best i have seen as well. The rest of the High Priests were a bit over dramatic with the overly distorted facial expressions in This Jesus Must Die. Tony Vincient's Simon was wonderful. The fight scene for Simon Zealots was a wonderful way of staging the song. Much better than the dance number in the 1970s film. Tony's voice is incrediable. Glen Carters Gethesemene was fantastic as well. I did not like the Superstar sequence in this one. Its Angels in black leather kinda turned me off from the whole sequence. Overall this was a wonderful production. A major step up from the 1970s film. The acting was wonderful and the singing was too. I would definately reccomend this video to anyone.

Summary: Great in every way
Review: When I first saw the opening sequences I wasn't at all sure I was going to like this but once it got going I was very impressed by everything about it. I think Annas was the best character. My favourite songs are Heaven on their minds, Jesus must die and I like the bit in the overture which is the same as the bit at the start of heaven on their minds. I would definitely recommend it to anybody who likes Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Summary: One of the best DVD's I own
Review: Jesus Christ Superstar had always been my favorite musical, and when I found out the new DVD was coming out I ordered it as fast as I could. This is the best DVD I have...I watch it almost every day. Those of you who are used to the 70s version are in for a little surprise- the theme of the movie is a lot darker, also more contemporary. Jesus comes out in the first scene wearing cargo pants and a tank top. The performances, however, were absolutely amazing-- especially Glenn Carter's. I have never heard anyone who could sing as well as him (he has the widest vocal range I have ever heard)- his acting is incredible, and his song, gesthamane, brought me to tears. The best thing about him, I think, is the way he's able to portray Christ's emotions and, especially, his fears. Usually when I watch a crucifixion on TV I can't relate to the actor, because Christ has usually been portrayed as some cold, distant person (there are some exeptions, mind you). But when Glenn Carter is portraying the crucifixion and the 39 lashes you can see the fear and pain on his face- you feel like you're being pulled into the performance. Renee Castle did a wonderful job too, with a beautiful voice and a very good perception of her character. Jerome Pradon's acting was phenomenal, but his singing, I think, could have been better. I think some of this songs were out of his voice range-- you can hear his voice squeak quite a few times. I was also very impressed with Pilate- a huge difference from Barry Dennen in the 70s JCS. Pilate (Fred Johanson) is authorative and intimidating- he looks like he's about 6'5. And his voice is amazing, deep and rich, and his acting is very convincing. Overall I think the movie was a great success- the choreography and music is good as well. They filled in the gaps where no one's singing very cleverly, so you can actually see what's going on, not like in the 70's version where it looked like Ted Neely was having mood swings. I highly recommend this movie, you won't be dissapointed!
