Summary: So fine
Review: Finally released separately on DVD (the previous, pricier edition was packaged with "Pecker"), this is a sweet-comic gem and still the most fun John Waters films. Great performances by Rikki Lake, Divine, Jerry Stiller, and Colleen Fitzpatrick (aka Vitamic C) as Amber von Tussle. The DVD features include the original theatrical trailer and interesting commentary by Rikki Lake and John Waters. A must-have.

Summary: See it again, now that you have DVD sound
Review: I've seen essentially three versions of Hairspray:
Version M: Ten years ago, and heard it through a 4" TV speaker.
Version P: The play in Manhattan, in August 2002.
Version S: Shortly after the play, the movie again, but this time through a 200-watt (RMS) two-speaker sound system.

Conclusions:
(1) The movie and play are both excellent, but except for the names of the characters quite different. I recommend seeing both. Put simply (very simply), the focus of the movie is on the teenager, Tracy, while the focus of the play is on Tracy's mother. What both the movie and play have in common is that at the end the focus-of-the movie/play goes through an adventure after which she emerges feeling significantly better about herself (dare I say that "her self esteem improves?).
(2) I actually enjoyed Version S better than Version M, probably due primarily to the significantly better sound.
(3) I was 16 in June 1962 when the movie takes place, so I remember the time, and the movie captures both teen values and their relationship with their parents that I remember.
(4) When Seaweed's younger sister says to Tracy with unqualified joy, "You're my favorite dancer!" she succinctly captures the powerful (and almost certainly unintended effect) that TV had on integration.

Summary: ROACHES? My Tracy's a CLEAN TEEN.....
Review: This is campy, vampy, feel-good fun which will pick you up no matter how down you are. Ricki Lake stars, and, unlike the talk show she would later go on to host, "Hairspray" is tacky in an affectionate, not mean-spirited way. Divine has never been better, and watch out for Debbie Harry's exploding hair. Among John Water's more mainstream efforts, "Hairspray" is the best, with maybe "Polyester" coming in a close second.

Summary: A kinder and gentler John Waters and Divine
Review: This film reveals a tender side to John Waters and Divine after their previous shockers such as Pink Flamingoes (Divine eats a dog's dump) and Female Trouble (Divine strangles her retarded daughter Taffy). The story is cute, 1950's Baltimore, white fat girl (Ricki Lake) from the poor side of town dates a black teen from the hood. It all happens with a local dance show, The Corney Collins show as the back drop. Great oldies, The Madison, Town Without Pity, and great dance numbers recreate an idealized innocence that never really existed while subverting this innocence by exposing the racial tensions of the time. The cast is a camp feast, Sonny Bono, Debbie Harry, Pia Zadora just to name a few. There are some classic John Waters moments, such as the rats that attack the kids at night and the upclose popping of a teenager's pimple, but most of it is just silly and sweet. (...)

Summary: Ricky Lakes Dancin
Review: Ricky lake plays a cool white Chic Tracey Turnblad..who's dream is to be on the local after school dance show...She's a little chubby so some of the kids don't like her but she's the best white dancer in town...She gets lots of publicity a fights against segregation..It's quite humerous..They really dog her with the fat comments in this film..But she dances her tail off..

Summary: Oh mother, you're sooo fifties!!!
Review: You just have to love this film. It's definitely John Waters' most mainstream to date, yet manages to continue his legacy of wry humor, and in-your-face political statements without you even realising it. Ricki Lake was perfect as Tracy, and Divine the perfect mother! (Take that as you will) The story is probably more true-to-life than most of us would realise, but knowing how high school cliques are now, the antics in HairSpray can't be far from the truth. It's a feel good movie :-)

Review: This film could be considered a guilty pleasure. But guilty pleasures are the best to indulge in, wouldn't you say? The film is about a peppy, plump teenager named Tracy, who wants to rise to stardom on a local dance show. Along the way she encounters problems from spiteful schoolmates, old-fashioned parents and other obstacles. This is a funny camp classic from the genius of John Waters. This film features an all star cast, Ricki Lake, Sonny Bono, Deborah Harry, Jerry Stiller and Divine. This funny retro-themed filmed also features Leslie Ann Powers, Pia Zadora, Clayton Prince and John Waters himself. With a good soundtrack, lovable characters (most of them) and an underlying civil rights theme, this is a great film to watch any time.

As a young girl my friends And I would gather around the television and sing and dance to all the classic tunes. My favorite is by Toussand McCall(?) and you can still catch me shakin' a tail feather at the local nitespots. If you want an excellent film that is educational, entertaining, and impeccable buy Hairspray, it'll last you a lifetime
