Summary: Truly Excellent One of the Best Movies I Have Ever Seen
Review: The Red Violin is truly the best movie I have seen in years. I agree Samuel L. Jackson was an odd person to cast in this film, but then this isn't your every day run of the mill film. The underscore was sxcellent and helped to bring the movie together. Wonderfully done and artfully sensual. If one can let themselves go and feel the music than they will be better for it. What makes us who we are is what we feel and what we have felt. Definitely a strong recommendation to buy this movie, for anyone who has any passion for art, sensualality, or music.

Summary: disappointing, at best
Review: I hate to say it, but this was an abysmally executed movie. I had high hopes, despite a total lack of critical acclaim, and for once find myself siding with the critics... The interplay of the chronologies was potentially clever, but executed poorly enough to add only superficial interest. The movie unfortunately stayed superficial in its treatment of all the characters, including the violin. I believed the violin was special only because I was told so - it never resonated for me as apparently it did for Moritz. As the ostensible main character, Moritz is unexplored - the depth of feeling the movie suggested was necessarily present in anyone able to recognise the masterpiece was non-evident, except in one contrived moment when he chastises a scientist for "not getting it". The cinematography lacked originality (or even effectiveness), the dialogue was mediocre and predictable. The one redeeming feature was the score, which often overwhelmed the film entirely such that at times I was tempted to turn the picture off. I would recommend anyone who actually watches this film to optimize their enjoyment by listening in full surround sound. Or better yet, skip the movie and buy the soundtrack.

Summary: A pleasant surprise
Review: I bought this DVD because it looked interesting--one of those "take a chance" purchases. I was happy I did. This movie is really good! Yeah, the revelation of the "red" in the red violin wasn't a big surprise, but so what. If you want to see an interesting and intelligent movie, this is the DVD to get. I'm sorry it didn't get the attention it deserved in the theaters.

Summary: Mesmerizing!
Review: The interplay of past and present , leading up to, distancing, repeating, anticipating ... all came together rather remarkably. Samuel Jackson's character was a bit of a long shot to immediately grasp, but it worked okay. The mystery of the violin's color seemed more interesting than astonishing. Other than those two "quirks," it's definitely a "DVD buy." I'm a violin player, so I am partial - this movie made me take the 'ol instrument from the closet and befriend it once again. Enjoy! P.S. The CD soundtrack is like the "Energizer Bunny" on steroids. Me and my pet rats were startled (heart beats suspended) on several selections.

Summary: An Instant Classic
Review: Intelligent, beautiful and thoroughly adult... How many movies have you seen lately that fit that description? This was NOT made for fourteen year old boys (although they might like it) and there are no special effects. Just marvelous acting and heavenly music.

Summary: great dvd.. but the sync is soft
Review: I waited and waited for this movie to be relaesed on dvd..... when I bought it I rushed back to the office to pop it in the player and turned up the reciver to listen to the full 5:1 mix.... and then I noticed something.. the audio sync was a hair off... I work for a dvd authoring house and thought I was being picky.. then someone walked in and noted the same thing.. it was out of sync.. its only a hair out... but thats enough for me.. i'd wait awhile to they put a newer version out.. This is a great movie!~

Summary: best airplane movie i ever saw
Review: I first saw this on a Canadian Airlines flight to London. i wasn't expecting much from it- after all it was an airplane movie. I was amazed that anyone would show it on an airplane and after i got back to the US spent months telling my friends to go and find this movie in the vido stores and watch it, i loved it so much. This was, some 4 months before its theatrical release in the US, so it was a fruitless reccommendation, but now they can buyu it and watch on and on. I really enjoyed the interplay between french and english, as i understood both languagues, and the more pieces started to fit together as the movie moved along.

Summary: great movie for non-music people
Review: To be honest I'm more of an action/adventure type movie person but while on a flight to Miami this just happened to be the in flight movie. I thought it would be just another movie to help put you to sleep but the more I watched the more I became captivated by the story, cinematography and acting. It ended up having more action and adventure than most films I've seen! After coming back from vacation I made sure to find this movie and have added it to my collection. I won't spoil it by telling any scenes of the movie so if you havn't seen it take a look. A very great movie to own and to watch again and again

Summary: Very Moving
Review: This was a masterful movie, telling a story (which spanned over 300 years) of one sonically perfect violin. Amazing suprise ending.
