Rating: Summary: WONDERFUL! Review: Joseph, how can I ever say, all that I want to about you? This movie is simply a joy! This is one of my all time favorite plays so when I heard it was due out on DVD this month, I didn't wait a moment to order it. I was not dissapointed! The colors are rich, the sound is full, the transfer (was there a transfer?) is flawless. Donny Osmond is wonderful as Joseph. The narrator carries the play with her amazing voice, refraining from stealing any scenes (as I have seen done on on-stage versions). The chorus is incredible. The only blotch for my viewing was Joan Collins. She seemed to self-aware "Hey everyone, I am Joan Collins!" that her character wasn't even on stage with her. I saw a high school student do a much better job at Mrs. Potipher last year because she had some acting talent. Other than that mercifully short scene, the entire DVD is excellent. I couldn't recommend it higher!
Rating: Summary: Joseph Review: I rented the movie last night and it made me feel like I did the first time I saw the show in Chicago. It took my breath away. I had goosebumps through the whole movie. Of course Donny was as wonderful as ever and the narrator, Maria, was just marvelous. She has such expression in her voice. The whole cast did a fine job in capturing the excitment of this stage show on to the screen.
Rating: Summary: 100% fun! Review: This has to be the best videotape for a musical since "Les Mis" in concert. Maria Friedman is the best Narrator I've seen or heard. And if you have any doubts about Richard Attenborough fear not! He's having as much fun as the ensemble. I've seen "Joseph" performed live twice, and the energy level is not lost in the home video translation. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that the energy level is jacked up a few notches. As far as the orchestrations and choreography are concerned, it's just as I remember them from the first time I saw it live with Sam Harris as Joseph. Buy this video if you enjoy a good musical-and if it doesn't put a smile on your face, check your pulse!
Rating: Summary: Awesome! Review: My school just put on Joseph and it was amazing! I loved doing it and the songs are up beat and great too!
Rating: Summary: Gets Better As You Go...But VERY Cheesy Review: I was a little disappointed in this adaptation. They completely changed the set and tried to add some special effects. Is it just me or did anybody else flinch when Donny Osmond was 'falling' down into the jail cell? Truly cheesy. When the movie first started I realized that I did not like Maria Friedman. Her voice is so breathy. You'd think she was a porn star, but as the play progressed, she got better. Donny sounded great as did the rest of the cast. Later the set starts looking like the original with some minor changes and it gets better. Go Joseph is probably the best production number in the movie. But the thing that stands out most in the version is the very stupid and very awful attempt at comedy. Let the words make your jokes for you. Physical comedy just is not funny in a show like this. When they throw Joseph in the pit and he comes up with a snake puppet on his hand and scares the narrator and then it 'grabs' him and pulls him back down, I almost shut it off. What is wrong with the producers? Did they not see how stupid some of these 'attempts' were? Anyway, these problems are not enough for anyone NOT to buy it. It is entertaining and kids will love it. But dont expect the caliber and the great sets of the stage show.
Rating: Summary: Children Love It! Review: I can't keep my five children from watching this DVD. Pharoah's Elvis impersonation is a big hit. It is all quite colorful and entertaining. I had to forcefully turn it off last night and tell them, "Enough already!". Some of the scenes (Potiphar's Wife) are suggestive, but no more than the Biblical account. I would highly recommend this DVD.
Rating: Summary: Well done. Great production. Review: JOSEPH is the first show I directed in college -- and this is a wonderful production, full of color, great cinematography, and good performances. The look at the making of the show (DVD only) provides nice insights to the creative minds of Webber/Rice.
Rating: Summary: Superior to CATS in all aspects Review: This is one amazing video. This video production is the 4th production of the show I've seen and I also recently played Potiphar and Asher in a production. This video was so wonderful. This is obviously a show I love. The sets were terrific (especially the Potiphar sets), the acting was for the most part - great (Marie is my new favorite person...she's delicious as the Narrator), and musically it was tons of fun. An incredibly fun and original production which is bound to bring lots of attention (and money) to this show. My one complaint? The costumes. Right there on the cover it says, "The Classic Family Musical", and we have Mrs. Potiphar and her servants bouncing in around in practically nothing. And then in the Pharaoh sequence...what are those girls wearing? Nothing but gold chains? Perhaps, "The Classic Musical" should have just been in the video, and not "Classic Family". Aww well, all in all, a great musical that is terrible amounts of fun. I highly recommend it (Though parents be prepared for some covering of the eyes of your children).
Rating: Summary: All in all done well Review: I am an extremely avid joseph fan. I've seen the tour every time it's come to town, acted in it, and accompanied it. It's without a doubt my favorite show. The video gave me mixed feelings at first. The beginning of the movie was wonderful, the whole prologue into any dream will do. The set and costumes stay faithful to the newest touring productions. The acting is wonderful, expecially for the narrator, and Donny Osmand's still got that flawless rich voice. On the other hand, Maria Friedman was not the ideal SINGING voice for the narrator in my mind. A few songs in the movie have been lowered in key it seems to accomodate her voice. The songs are also a bit sluggish, not significantly, however, which makes normally uptempo numbers seem to drop into the realm of easy listening pop. All in all, however, this video is without a doubt an essential own. If you like musicals, you must buy this video.
Rating: Summary: joseph and the amazing technicolor dreamcoat Review: This time I was not happy with the 1.15 min running time of the video. I think Weber short changed this musical. Everything was outstanding except the running time.
