Rating: Summary: A must-have for your DVD collection Review: Especially if you have a six-year-old (mine loved it). I had never seen it before and found it amazing. Even if you're not interested in the singing, the costumes and make-up are fantastic. A real classic (Of course).
Rating: Summary: The best version of Cats yet! Review: This video of Cats is the best version of the show I have seen to date. I am a Cats addict and I have seen the show over 15 times with various casts, between London, Broadway and Japan. I think the cast assembled on this video is the best I have seen (more than just "competent" as the editorial review said). The only person I was not too keen on was the choice of John Mills, because of whom the excellent "Growltiger's Last Stand" was taken out. John Mills was great, don't get me wrong, but I wish Gus was played by someone who could have pulled this part off. I was very disappointed to see this part of the show taken out, as it was one of my favourites, and because of that some of the best performers on the video which are in this scene had their screen time shortened. Even so, the rest of the video is great. I did not get the commemorative edition, so I cannot comment on the "extras". I did not get it as I am not sure what exactly is on it. But the video of the show itself is fabulous because of the great cast - Michael Gruber is the strongest Munkustrap I have ever seen, Veerle Casteleyn is the cutest Jemima yet, Jo Bingham is adorable as Etcetera, John Partridge plays Rum Tum Tugger the way I always thought he should be played, Jacob Brent is absolutely amazing as Mistoffelees, Phyllida Crowley Smith is the most amazing dancer, Elaine Paige goes without saying, and I will not go on cause you get the message. Anyway, it took me a while before I bought this video, cause I wasn't sure if the atmosphere of the show would transfer well on the video, but it does cause of the amazing cast, and the fact that there are many close ups. Don't miss out on it, you won't be disappointed!
Rating: Summary: Color, Sound, Excitement & Just a Touch of Strange Review: Wow! More than just a Sunday afternoon musical. With frenetic energy and unending choreographic magic, the actors in this adaptation of T.S. Elliott's poems about Jellicle cats, bring a feline feel to the stage. You can't help but be intrigued by the makeup while you enjoy the voices of this wonderful cast. In a world in which you sometimes wonder what you can let the kids watch, Andrew Lloyd Webber comes through once more. But don't imagine for a moment that these children's poems give rise to a movie only for the wee ones -- you'll sit enthralled as you try to figure out what in the world these cats mean as they each tell their stories in hopes of gaining the Heavyside Layer. You'll want to watch this video more than once to squeeze every bit of enjoyment out of it that you can. This is a "must have" addition to anyone's musical collection.

Rating: Summary: What a rip off... Review: The "extras" were NOTHING more than another video tape with "The Making of Cats" on it. If you already own the regular DVD (same "extras" are on it), or if you got a chance to record it on tv (for free), provided your local PBS affiliate aired it when they originally aired the Cats video, then this thing is useless. I found it to be a complete waste of money.
Rating: Summary: Pretty Good. Review: This video is a pretty good representation of the stage show, with a few exceptions: Why are the cats lyp-synching? Why didn't they use a real set, like the london or b'way show? Why did they cut out the song "growltiger's last stand"?. The lyp-synching takes away from the spontaniality of the show, the set from the touring company is not nearly as impressive as the real set, and "Growltiger's last Stand" contains a beautiful ballad that would have showed up great on video! The lighting for the video is all wrong. There is WAYYY too much plain blue light. As you can see from pictures of the show, when the stage is lit red, even the moon backdrop turns red, so why is it always blue in the video? Other than these problems, the video is at least entertaining and somewhat true to the great theatrical production that will live on far after it has closed. Enjoy!
Rating: Summary: CATS Video (Commemorative Edition) Review: The CATS Video is an excellent video, and also a great memento, because the Broadway show is closing September 10th. The video has many great voices (although many were dubbed) and the Making of CATS gives a real insight on how and why CATS was produced. If you want excellent family or individual entertainment, purchase this video set.
Rating: Summary: Very enjoyable Review: I never considered Cats a great piece of theatre. However, it is pure fun to watch. Often mindless perhaps, but visually stunning. The dancing is incredible, the costumes are wonderful, most of the music is very good, and the cast chosen for this video is simply amazing. Sorry, but I am happy they took out the very boring "Growltiger's Last Stand". I nearly dozed off when I watched that part in the theatre. To each his own, but for me, this number is unnecessary. I will never get over the changed music to "Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer", though. The original version on the OLC CD had stunning music. The new version is forgettable. But oh, well... the other things in the video make up for it. Concerning the video, I have noticed some clumsy, abrupt editing, but I suppose it's not too distracting. Finally, the cast-- there was not a single person I wasn't impressed with. Still, my favorites were Elaine Paige, John Mills, John Partridge and Michael Gruber. Their characterizations were unique and wonderful. Perhaps Cats has been running for too long for some to take it seriously. However, now that it's closing on Broadway, this video should be a must in the upbringing of every child.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Family Entertainment Review: I found cats in the video rental section of my public library and rented it because I was always curious about the show after seeing commercials since I was a child. I watched it with my 5 year old daughter and was not really impressed the first time we watched it because I was trying to figure out the story. The second time was magic though. The music haunted me the whole next day and my daughter fell in love with Rum Tum Tugger (as well as myself, my mother and 2 sisters). We love all the songs as well as watching their awesome dancing and acting. It is great entertaining fun you wont be embarrassed to share with the rest of your family. I have bought 3 extra to give as gifts and recommend viewing it 2 times if it doesnt particularly grab you at first.
