Description:

If you are just beginning to collect recordings of classical music, and you're at the stage where the whole thing is really exciting, this could be a good resource for you. Using a standard news magazine approach, this disc interviews and reviews some new and some old to give a picture of the current classical music scene. The interviews tend toward arrogance on parade. Included are Welsh bass-baritone Bryn Terfel, violinist Dimitri Sitkovetsky, composer John Adams, and jazz-singer-turned-pretty-good-conductor Bobby McFerrin. The reviews are quite good, if a little conservative in choice. Stereo Review's Editor-at-Large, William Livingstone, makes some good choices (accompanied by audio teasers), especially for those who are still filling in their standard repertory, and the always-interesting Martin Bernheimer gives a tour through the world of opera video. Also included is a story on the rerecording of the score for Alexander Nevsky (which would make a particularly nice addition to everyone's collection), and as a finale, clay animation dessert dishes sing a chorus from La Traviata! --Seth Krimsky
