Rating: Summary: Excellent Old Skool Tango Review: After trying to learn tango from many teachers and purchasing many videos of the "New School Tango Teachers" A friend gave me this video almost as a secret. I studied this thing like crazy and was I a hit (I'm only 22 years) It's nice to be able to take lessons from old skool masters who really loved this dance (similar to the Swing dance Masters)rather than some hot shot who is all flash and trash and just teaches moves. The production is great as well.

Rating: Summary: Stuck in time Review: Copes is one of the best-known names in the worlf of Argentine Tango. He is most famous for his dancing in the 1980's Broadway hit show "Tango Argentino". This DVD features his latest show, which played in Buenos Aires not too long ago. It is sad and boring. Sad because he was once a great dancer and now he is just a shadow of his former self. He still is in good shape, but he is so stuck in time! He is dancing the same steps and the same sequences of steps as he did in the 1990's, and in the 1980's, and in the 1970's, and .. you get the idea. He never improved, never changed. He just recycles his old stuff to different tangos. He no longer dances with his best partner of many years - Maria Nieves. He only dances with his daughter. For god's sake - this is tango. How can it be romantic, passionate, sexy -when you see a father dancing with his daughter. The girl is an OK dancer, but it's not dancing - what they are doing is just going through their step sequences and silently counting: uno, dos, tres, .... Speaking of steps, the other part of the DVD is instruction by Copes and his daughter in tango and milonga. Again, stuck in time. Nobody teaches like that. Nobody could ever learn to dance tango like that. It is pathetic.
Rating: Summary: Nice show, lousy instruction Review: DVD quality is good, show is nice. The choreography is a bit repetitive, and there is not a whole lot of chemistry between the dancers - as a friend of mine from Portland says, "Tango is a mating dance," and it should be danced that way. Although since Copes is dancing with his daughter I'm not sure I would want to see that kind of chemistry! Now for the instruction...first of all, this is NOT social tango, it is stage or fantasia tango like they were dancing in the show. Teaching someonw to dance Argentine tango by splitting up the leads and follows and showing them patterns is ludicrous. You end up with men who can't lead and women who can't follow. The instruction never mentions the concept of connection, or the importance of the music, which is central to the dance. If you want to enjoy a show, buy this tape. If you want to learn how to dance Argentine tango, find a good teacher in your area, preferably one that has studied with Susanna Miller or Cacho Dante or any of the other Argentine masters that teach social tango, not this fantasia silliness that is exported for consumption by us gringos.

Rating: Summary: Lackluster show and ludicrous instruction Review: The show is a look back, way back. When the tango was near death and barely survived. Thankfully, the tango has now advanced way beyond what this show demonstrates. The dancers are so mediocore that no amount of great music can rescue this show. The instruction is just not usefull at all. Memorizing these steps and figures may be useful only for shows as this one.
Rating: Summary: The Best in Tango Review: This DVD has it all. Entertaining, educational, and just fun to watch. The lessons at the end of the DVD are worth the price alone. Copes Tango Copes is a must have for learning clean, professional technique.
