Summary: Grease...Clogs Up The Arteries!!
Review: No! GREASE is not the word!! This movie is one of the worst musicals ever made. SINGIN IN THE RAIN, and WEST SIDE STORY...Now those are musicals!! The characters look too old for their parts. Olivia Newton John and Stockard Channing look like bimbos and Travolta and Conaway look like hoodlums. They don't look like...high schoolers? Some of the songs are catchy (Summer Nights, and Grease Lightning) but the movie is badly directed and the song and dance numbers are really bush league! All the characters are meanspirited, annoying and should be in an old peoples home and not going to Rydell High . Lastly, the acting is all terrible. Skip this movie and put on AN AMERICAN IN PARIS or ON THE TOWN or any other musical besides this piece of [garbage].

Summary: Grease
Review: In Grease you will soon be zapped in to the world of Rydell high school. As you watch this fantastic film you will see the ups and down of Sandy (Olivia Newton-John) and Danny's (John Travolta) love. At Rydell high the teenagers get up to allsorts, but nothing could stop them doing it. The film was made in 1959 and this musical will make you want it over and over again. Be thrilled by the way it is made and come to the edge of your seat as Grease Lightening is raced at Thunder Road.
Remember GREASE is still the word.

Summary: Great Flick - Lousy DVD
Review: One of my favorites from my youth is finally out on DVD, and while it is a real pleasure to see it with the new medium's visual clarity, I have to wonder who's dumb idea it was to add so much reverb to every musical number that the characters sound like they're singing in the Holland Tunnel. There's no such reverb on the cast recording - WHY was it deemed necessary for the DVD? It was only by accident that I discovered that by switching off the VSS mode on my DVD player, the reverb would shut up and I could actually enjoy the musical numbers. If you're having the same problem, try altering your VSS setting. Other than that (and seconding everyone else's reservations regarding the DVD's near total lack of special features - for this flick, I would have liked to have seen a sing-along, bouncing-ball version... or even a karaoke track) it's still a great flick.

Summary: WHY IT'S GREASED LIGHTNIN'!
Review: And that is true... why it's Grease... and it is definantly the word! I saw the play of this, and I had to see the movie after that, and I wasn't disappointed. John Travolta steals the screen with Olivia Newton-John, and you have a happy little reviewer.

5 out of 5!

Summary: Energy, Vitality and Pure Fun! Go John And Olivia!
Review: GREASE was directed by Randall Kleiser (The Blue Lagoon, Honey, I Blew Up The Kids) as an attempt to revive the old Movie Musical format. It was a great success on Broadway and it wasn't until Paramount Pictures took on the challenge before anyone realized the movie musical, if done right, could be a great success.

This movie has the best casting around at the time. John Travolta (Saturday Night Fever, Face Off, Pulp Fiction) and Olivia Newton John (Two Of A Kind, Xanadu) as Danny and Sandy trying to make their senior year in high school the best it could be after spending a summer together falling in love. The trials and tribulations of high school, graduating, rivals gangs and sexual advances all in the 1950's - a time of music and passion and a lot of simple things.

Great costuming, great musical arrangements and the best part for me was the choreography. Staying true the tradition of musical theatre, the dance numbers where fun and energetic and simply the best for a modern day musical on the screen. Such hits came from his movie like the title track itself GREASE (written by Barry Gibb), You're The One That I Want and Hopelessly Devoted to You are a few that made the pop charts back in 1978.

Great supporting cast members and some incredible performances by Jeff Conoway (Taxi, Babylon Five-TV, Man On The Moon) Didi Conn (Violet, Grease 2) , Michael Tucci (The Garry Shandling Show, Blow) , Sid Caeser (Your Show Of Shows-TV, Grease 2, Vegas Vacation), Eve Arden (Under The Rainbow, Grease 2) and the best of them all Miss Stockard Channing (The First Wives Club, The West Wing -TV). Her performance as Rizzo could never be matched.

This movie is fun for everyone and whole family and will keep your toes tapping and the tunes humming long after you see it. The DVD extras include and anniversary celebration for the movie as well as a retrospective on what it took to make this thing happen. According to them it was a joy of joys to work and even more fun to watch over and over. (10-27-02)

Summary: Grease (Widescreen Edition) DVD
Review: I love this movie but very upset with product...this is not a true "widescreen" edition..this is more of a pan and scan "widescreen" edition.

Right off the bat..you can tell the film has been chopped especially when only the star name appear half of the screen..

Also through out the movie some group shots only show 1/2 a group when in the theatre everyone was include the picture...

Shame on Paramount for allowing this great movie going under false pretense..

Everyone should demand Paramount to redo this picture in a true "widescreen" as it should be...

Summary: Grease is the Word
Review: I have seen this movie one hundred times and still cannot get enough of it. Everytime I see it is like seeing for the first time. Yes some of the plot is kind of stereotypical but it doesn't matter because the songs and the actors more than make up for it. I would recommend this movie to everyone even if you'd neve seen a musical.
