Summary: great!
Review: I live in a place where live theatre is not available, but I have always loved the music. This video gave me a chance to experience it. I found myself holding my breath during each song, so I wouldn't miss a single note. I also had tears in my eyes when each song was finished. I didn't want it to end!

Summary: A spectacular performance compromised in this DVD
Review: The performance is first rate in terms of the video editing and the cameras capturing the essence of the performers with just the right amount of shifting between closeups and full stage. The director brilliantly allows us to relive the full stage production in this wonderful reunion concert. The problem, however, is with someone's decision to present the concert only in the TV screen aspect ratio (4:3)instead of the widescreen version that is presented on the laserdisc that was was released several months ago. One of the advantages of the DVD format is the ability to offer both full screen and widescreen versions. They have done an injustice to the performance here by the cropping that eliminates some of the actors on the stage. This is especially deplorable since the widescreen version with its full width is already mastered, etc. In addition, as an additional insult, several minutes of the "special" production at the end of the basic performance, have been deleted further taking away some of the special charm of this tenth year event. The only reason that I bought the DVD after owning the laserdisc is to perhaps be able to see it in the higher resolution that DVD potentially offers. Again disappointment, it isn't any sharper at all. This is carelessness on somebody's part. A performance as rare as this, deserves presentation that is better than, not worse than, what is already available.

Summary: Not to be missed, for all Les Miserables lovers
Review: If you have only seen this on PBS, you are missing a lot. This is a tremendous video of one of the best musicals of all time. The performances are top notch.

As good as it is, it could have been better. The drawbacks are not in the performance, but the technical production. While the video quality is outstanding, the director could not keep himself from frequently, arbitrarily, often senselessly, changing camera angles. The performance itself like any live production was designed for an audience with a constant point of view. The camera tried to capture the facial expressions, granted very important, with closeups that often sacrificed the dance steps and body language. Often cutting from a close to a two-thirds shot just after a dance step or two had just passed. It would have been profoundly better to have selected a single (or few) camera angle(s) and then allowing the performance to dictate the artistic quality.

The sound recording quality is good but not outstanding. While the performers did use individual microphones, the resulting mix was not so clear as modern recording should have allowed. Also, it is in simple stereo rather than any of the surround sounds, etc.

Still, it will be one of your favorite DVD's, to be watched again and again. This is what DVD was invented for.
