Summary: Superb!
Review: This is one musical that every movie lover should have in their collection. I've seen it a dozen times and still never tire of it. It does lag some now and then with Ann Miller wearing a little thin at times. Bobby Van is just wonderful. And who would not love watching Bob Fosse in "From this moment on". It's an all time classic number. I still get goose bumps when I see and hear that song and dance. Can't wait to see it in DVD.

Summary: This one deserves more stars!!
Review: This is one of my all-time musical favorites and in my opinion, the best MGM musical made outside the Freed unit, with a top of the tops score by Cole Porter, my all-time favorite composer.

Grayson and Keel are in top form, their on-screen chemistry at its best moment, in such numbers as "We Open in Venice", the wonderful "Wunderbar", and the wondrous, lyrical and evocative "So In Love", one of the best romantic songs ever written by Porter.

Also in the cast, Ann Miller in excellent tap-dance form, in such show-stoppers as "Too Darn Hot", "Tom, Dick and Harry" (accompanied by Tommy Rall, Bobby Van, and Bob Fosse), but especially "From This Moment On", a number which features the aforementioned male dancers, plus Carol Haney and Jeannie Coyne, which is stolen by Fosse and Haney, in an unforgettable jazz-oriented pairing, as the french say: "la creme de la creme".

And last but not least, the funny couple of Keenan Wynn and James Whitmore, are thrown in for good measure and lots of laughs, getting also their chance at showbiz with "Brush Up Your Shakespeare".

I had longed for this dvd release, and after buying it I can say that I am satisfied with it.

If you are musical film-buff, buy it, it has an excellent score, sophisticated lyrics, very good singing, excellent numbers, expert dancing and some very funny moments indeed!!

Summary: OK, But NOT the best version
Review: Unfortunately at the time this film was made censorship would not permit some of the best parts of the stage version to be used (nothing really objectionable just puritanical Hayes Office things that are now used in G rated films). Also, some essential plot elements were changed and parts cut. It also was filmed in 3D so that Ann Miller kicks at the camera and other "tricks" are used that mean next to nothing today.

For the complete "Kate" with all the songs and plot elements check out the Broadway Revival - PBS Great Performances version. It is the REAL complete "Kiss Me Kate" with great performances especially Brent Barrett and the wonderful Rachael York in the leads - much better than the film version.

Summary: No Letterboxing?!
Review: What possessed the powers that be to release this great film in full-screen format? The laser disc was glorious in letterbox. I suggest taping it from Turner Classic Movies. While the picture quality will suffer, the dances will gain incredible dimension since they were obviously shot with wide-screen processing in mind.
