Summary: why bother?
Review: I agree with those who say that Singing in the Rain is the best movie musical. My "only 3 star" rating is due to the fact that this product will have only the same tired-out 1:1.33 screen aspect of the standard VHS version. Why bother?

Summary: An American Musical Classic
Review: I remember seeing the clip of Gene Kelly doing "Singin' in the Rain" years ago on one of the tribute shows. I never realized, though, that this movie was more than just one great song. There are several incredibly athletic dance numbers in this movie all accompanied by great songs. The chemistry between Debbie Reynolds, Gene Kelly, and Donald O'Connor was just incredible and made the movie that much more entertaining. There is great comic relief from not only Donald O'Connor, but Jean Hagen as well.This is one movie that will perk you up if you are down, or just want to have some good, wholesome entertainment. The only "Potential" negative I have about this movie is its presentation. I don't know what the theatre screen dimensions were back in the 50's, but this DVD is full screen. It is a great loss for us if parts of the scenes were truncated because the producers chose not to do a letterbox version. It is still a great movie to see, though.

Summary: Now I understand
Review: I heard about this movie for years. Comments of every sorts, even the unconvincing parody from Kubrick's Clockwork Orange, finally got me. I checked for it and bought the DVD. As you may guess, "An american in Paris" followed shortly. I began to discover the rich art of the american musicals of the 40's and 50's. I'm now hungry for dancing scenes and singing/dancing numbers. And let's recognize that the acting is really good, acknowledging the fact that the intent is not to depict a dark and hopeless existence (which is only a "part" of reality, i'd say) but the story of human being with a good measure of optimism and appreciation for life... Why not! Gene Kelly is a monument. Amazing, totally amazing. O'Connor is perfect, and make an astounding job in sync with "Kelly Dancing Machine", ("Make'em laugh" is a top number, "Moses supposes" is incredible). Did you know Debbie Reynolds is the mother of ... Princess Lea. A little deception: few noticed JEAN HAGEN, which did exactly the contrary of her role in the film - she overdubbed Debbie Reynolds when she sings in the film... She had a fair pleasant voice but who remembers. Anyway, definitely one of the 25 best films of all time.

Review: I love this movie! I saw this film when I was a lot younger and even now that I am in college I wish I owned it! It is the best movie for a rainy day, a bad day, a good day, or any kind of day. It puts a smile on your face and has you singing the whole way through.

Summary: Singin' and Dancin', What More Can You Ask For?
Review: I cannot rave enough about this movie! The more I watch it, the more I love it. The singing, the dancing, and the story all combine to make this one of the all-time greatest musicals and movies ever made. My four-year-old even watches it from beginning to end and loves every minute of it. If (when) you are ever in a depressed mood, watch this movie. Gene Kelly's optimistic, classic "Singin' in the Rain" sequence and Donald O'Connor's "Make 'Em Laugh" performance can't help but lift your spirits. For musical lovers, this is a MUST OWN. For non-musical lovers, give this one a try. Even without the music and dancing, the story stands on its own. Along with the DVD, one receives an 8-page booklet that includes little-known facts about the making of the movie. I found those facts quite fascinating and in some cases, quite surprising; however, don't read the booklet until after you have seen the movie for the first time!

Summary: the perfect musical
Review: Singin' in the Rain is my favorate musical if not my favorate movie of all time. I was amazed at how the plot was strong aswell as the musical score brilliant. Because Gene Kelly directs it aswell as stars in it, it is a very well done movie full of beautiful dances and songs. I am so sentimental when it comes to this movie, I have loved it all my life. Gene Kelly , Donald Oconnor, and Debbie Renolds couldn't have done a more satisfying preformance. I can't get enough of it!

Summary: A joy as it is, and it should NOT be widescreen!
Review: This movie is an absolute joy, and words can not be said that will do it justice. Many comments here, however, have complained that it was not presented in widescreen. To put it simply, this is NOT a widescreen movie and it should NEVER be presented that way. The same goes for "Gone With The Wind," "The Wizard of Oz," "Casablanca," Citizen Kane" and thousands of other titles. When these movies on presented on television, they are presented full-screen (no letterboxing) because that's the way they were made. To present them widescreen would be like presenting a widescreen movie in pan & scan. So please, let's all be careful before we scream and shout that a movie wasn't presented in widescreen. Not all movies were made in that format. Most pre-1955 movies, in fact, were made to perfectly fit the television screen. So if you think you're missing something by watching a full-screen version of "Singin' in the Rain," you're wrong. If you watched a widescreen version of it, THEN you would be missing something.

Summary: A Classic Movie Not to be Missed
Review: For those people who have not seen this great classic, what are you waiting for? This movie fulfills all the requirements for one of Hollywoods greatest musicals ever made. You'll be awed by the awesome dancing of O'Conner, Reynolds and of course Gene Kelly. You'll laugh at Jean Hagen portraying the "dumb blond" and enjoy a scene with the talented Cyd Charisse. Anyone who hasn't seen this movie at least 5 times has to go see it again!
