John McEuen was always the most adventurous of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, suggesting their famous Will the Circle Be Unbroken album, and leaving the group for a time, only to return. Now he's spearheaded a DVD jam with band member Jimmy Ibbotson and a host of friends (among them Jennifer Warnes, plus Laurie Lewis and Tom Rozum) that works both as a behind-the-scenes look at recording and as plain good music. The repertoire morphs from traditional folk ("Shady Grove") to sophisticated pop ("Too Late Love Comes to Me") to swing ("Swing to Bop"), and it's made more enjoyable by spectacular multichannel sound and selectable video angles. Don't forget to check out the slide show of the band in years past--the nostalgia factor is a large part of the Dirt Band's appeal--or to eavesdrop on the conversations during rehearsal.
