Summary: Best Band for Music Videos
Review: I made a list of the songs in the Depeche mode - the videos. I am reviewing this in perspective of the old release of 86>98. There is not much difference within the instrinsics of the videos.

1. Intro -

2. Stripped: 4/5

3. A Question of Lust: 1/5

4. A Question of Time: 3/5

5. Strangelove: 3/5

6. Never Let Me Down Again: 5/5 - I thought this video had some awsome techniques and cinematography. "We're flying high"!!!

7. Behind the Wheel: 2/5

8. Little 15: 4/5

9. Everything Counts (live): 4/5 -very good filming and composite even for a live performance (non-musicvideo).

10. Personal Jesus: 3/5

11. Enjoy the Silence: 3/5

12. Policy of Truth: 3/5

13. World in My Eyes: 1/5

14. I Feel You: 2/5

15. Walking in my shoes: 4/5

16. Condemnation: 1/5

17. In Your Room: 2/5

18. Barrel of a Gun: 6/5 AWSOME!!! BY FAR THE BEST VIDEO ON 86>98

19. It's no Good: 3/5

20. Home: 4/5 - some might argue but i thought it was cool

21. Useless: 5/5 - Way cool!!! Majority of the video is taken from one camera angle

Summary: Good videos by the top synth band!
Review: I wasn't quite impressed with the plot of the videos. Some don't even relate to the song. I thought that "Enjoy the silence was going to be a bit more dark- or gothic - but we have Gahan walking around dressed as a King with a chair. Senseless! But some videos do give you 80's nostalgia - the 80's with a youthful band- which is now aged and somewhat tired. The packaging's art fits well, since it looks like the cover of "Black Celebration".The menus are easy to browse and select. The songs are perfect for a DVD project of this magnitude. All are hits and stories by themselves - it is the soundtrack (videos) of our lives. I'm most fond of the songs included here from "Violator". It is one of the best electronic albums of all times. By taking something from each production, the DVD flows and provides a glimpse of the band's evolution. Should not be taken for granted.......get it!

Summary: I'm just going to talk about the extras
Review: If you want the review of the stuff that was on the original DVD you can read it there

Well this rerelease has a bit of a funny story ( for me anyway ).I noticed that they had released this on video as well and I remember going mad because I only bought the other one a few months beforehand and just cursing my luck. Then on Paddy's Day I was hoping to trade videos ( including the DM video ) so I could get enough money to get this one here. I was out of luck on that front - even when I went for the long shot in HMV ( who don't do this sort of thing.

When I walked out an idea hit me - why don't I see if they have the video and try to trade it in. I went back in, extremely nervous, thinking " they'll never do this, they'll see right through me " and just went for it. I went up to the counter and made a little story that I got it for a present a few weeks ago but I saw that there was a new version and was hoping that I could change it. The girl at the till said if I had a receipt and I said " No unfortunately not." I was still nervous and I was amazed when she said to get the other video and they'd do the transaction. I was amazed, the idea worked!!!!!!! What made it seem more amazing was that the new version cost €3 less than the old one so I got €3 in discount vouchers. I was absolutely chuffed with myself - didn't think I'd get away with that one

Now onto the review of the extra stuff on the video. There's But Not Tonight which, as good as the song is, it seems like just an ordinary video that you would see on MTV America at the time. Nothing particularly special about it

Strangelove '88 is a rather pointless video that is inferior to the original - besides it's just the album version and it's better that we just enjoy the original

The Violator film is interesting as it shows the reactions of Martin and Dave while having a good sense of humour about it. They show a couple of videos ( Personal Jesus and Enjoy The Silence I think ) and they provide welcome relief from the interview

The SOFAD film captures the mood of the band perfectly......but that's not always enjoyable. Alan clearly looks pissed off with the whole thing, Dave clearly sounds like a drug addict, telling Paul Gambaccini ( the most irritating guy around at the time ) " don't say that, for f**k sake " when told that his tattoos were seemingly " springing to life." The atmosphere is really cold in this film. Martin seems a little subdued here. It's like he'll talk about everything but he doesn't really want to. In fact, it's Fletch who livens the interview up a good deal and I think it's to his credit that he does this. He may talk about business matters for some of it but he does make the interview not so much of a slog as it would have been without him.

But it makes the songs of SOFAD seem so much better here ( which I make no secret of how much I hate ) and gives a well deserved break ( and that is an understatement )

The One Caress video is one where the directors must have thought " These Depeche Mode guys, they're very gothic, let's do some overly gothic video to suit the mood of the music " and it's this that makes the video seem out of place with the song. It was gothic for the sake of being gothic and that's not always a good thing ( in fact, I don't know if it has ever been a good thing )

The Condemnation ( Paris Mix ) is just the Condemnation video cleverly retitled to lure you in

And finally we have the Ultra film. This has Ireland's very own Dave Fanning. If anyone finds him irritating, it's OK, a good few people think the same here in Ireland, so you're not alone! The interview itself is much more relaxed and very interesting and we find out that Dave was " a clever junkie." It adds a nice touch to the video as well. And again we get the videos from earlier on to help see out the video.

I still give this 5 stars because of the overall content and I would still recommend it to anyone interested. I just hope I haven't started a trend from what I said earlier on! Oh and by the way I've noticed that they're selling my video for it's full price....I know this because I forgot to rewind the tape! Still at least they can make money out of it ( again )

Summary: Fun but don't expect art
Review: The earliest videos were usually shot in black and white and appear grainy. In fact, the only videos worth buying this for are for "Personal Jesus," "A Question of Time," "Stripped," "Little 15," "Everything Counts," "Barrel of a Gun" and "Enjoy the Silence." The rest of the videos are CRAPOLA, simply put. Where Oh WHERE is the "Halo" music video? And why on earth was Kevin Kerslake hired to shoot "One Caress"--a song that had so much potential for a video?? One of the best Depeche Mode songs ever was reduced to a clip of Martin sitting on a log in the middle of the woods with bugs and snakes crawling around, and a shot of an old man being dragged around? I was like, "Ummmmmm, okay???" The second disc has very interesting short films that were used to promote the albums "Violator," "SOFAD" and "ULTRA." The band members offer interesting insights about the creative process for each album.

Summary: But Not Tonite...
Review: The movie "Modern Girls" was released in 1986, not 1984. And "But Not Tonite" is more enjoyable when you listen to it on its only true home, the wonderful album "Black Celebration."

Summary: I love depeche mode...
Review: Their videos were not groundbreaking (with the exception of enjoy the silence), but with such great music they really didn't have to be. I love depeche mode. They are truly one of my fave groups. Although I don't tend to watch this DVD a lot, it's still good to have if you're a loyal fan. If you're a depeche mode fan then this dvd is A MUST.

Summary: There are actually 4 missing videos
Review: There are four videos missing from this collection. Pimpf, Never Let Me Down Again(extended version), Halo, and Clean. The songs are from the Music for the Masses and VIOLATOR era. Those are great songs! You have have to buy the Strange and Strange TOO VHS's to watch them. I don't know where you can get the extended of NLMDA, but I seen it before. Dave Gahans shoes fall off his feet and start walking on its own (pretty cool video). Are they going to release a third DM - 86>98++ dvd and include those videos? I don't want to buy this dvd a third time...

I'm a little bit disappointed, they REALLY should've added them on there, but the rest of the dvd is good.

Summary: WHERE ARE THE VIDEOS FROM 81-85?!
Review: This is basically a re-release of the Depeche Mode - Videos 86>98 DVD that came out two years ago. The only difference is that four previously unreleased videos and three "new" documentaries have been added to this now two-disc DVD. What I don't understand is why the videos from 1981-1985 were not included on the second disc. If you are going to chronicle an artist's video career, why omit about 1/3 of their output?
