Summary: all crowd noise no music
Review: First off i must say after all the hype this dvd was a dissapointment.I have 5.1 surround and this concert was made in front of 60,000 crazy people in rio ,half of the concert shows the crowd, I dont want to keep seeing the "freaking" crowd, I want to see the band! I mean common way too many camera angle shots, neil peart has the biggest drum set to date but too bad the dvd pays more attention to the crowd and not enough on the band.

Summary: A very real look for fans
Review: After waiting almost what seems forever, I was thrilled to play this dvd from my favorite band-and almost played it to death. After reading some of the other reviews, I thought it time to do a comparison of sound and played "A Show of Hands" on VHS which is a decade old and "Different Stages Live" . Yes, these do sound a bit clearer and you can definately hear better instrument separation-there isn't that wall of sound with extra bass lines that the band has become fond of. Geddy said in his CNN interview that they are running up to three bass lines on there more recent songs.

Be that as it may, I love it all and youthful enthusiasm has been replaced with the depth of maturity. Listen to the playing! Natural Science and Neil's solo are worth the price of admission alone. Thumbs up-buy it! And enjoy the crowd and the sense of being there.

Its too bad Alex couldn't show a little bit of that "depth of maturity" and restraint on New Years. Now another crisis has hit the band on the verge of a World Tour.

Summary: Must see for those who like the band
Review: When I threw this DVD in all I could think of was "live". So many live DVDs are so overly produced that they fail to have that live feel...luckily this one doesn't. It has the same feel as Ozzys live and loud, they both remind one of a concert not a greatest hits album. I liked this DVD from the beginning to the end. Three people playing great music and covering a stage as large as the one they are playing on is a real tribute to the band. The dragon scene on the big screen and flurry that follows is one of the highlights of the DVD. Also amazing to see is the flow of the audience involved in the show. The drum solo (and I'm not a drummer) is also impressive. Overall I must give this DVD 5 stars because it shows one what an actual Rush concert sounds and feels like. It also shows the talent of the band. Impressive!

Review: 20th row center..Thats what this disc sounds like YOU are There! Sure I like the mixing board sound too, but this is the $#!~ the energy, the playlist...I can't say enough good about this show.

Summary: Great Concert...but
Review: The sound could have been a little better but what really irked me was the camera work. The frequency in which the camera angles changed was maddening!

Otherwise, my comments are positive and are reflected in other customer reviews.

Summary: Man are these guys tight!!!
Review: I have been following Rush for years and have seen them in concert 3 times. However, the RIO DVD is the most awesome display of what just 3 guys can do that I have ever seen. These guys are so tight...reproducing some of their studio recorded stuff lick for lick but in front of 40,000 people. Reading the DVD insert, Niel Pert makes the point that they never expected these crowd sizes and he also makes the point that their largest draw ever in the states was 12,000. We in the US should take notice of the fans... lip syncing every song...this from folks who speak Portuguese as their primary language.

Geddy Lee is just massive on the bass. I am a bass fanatic and he just blew my head off. My only complaint would be when each of the three were doing some serious solo licks, the camera was usually not panned in on them...but a minor minor point. Walk...no Run to get this DVD.

Summary: Rock para niños

Summary: VERY DISAPPOINTED!
Review: I don't know what you people who gave this DVD 5 stars are talking about. Yes I agree the sound quality was good, but I could put on a CD to HEAR them play. I couldn't SEE them playing. Isn't that what a video is all about. Who were the camera people recording this Video? Who cares about the fans! I'm a FAN! I want to see THEM! Everytime Lifeson had a solo I kept seeing HIS BACK! Who wants to see his back? I want to see him play a guitar. They kept jumping from one band member to another. VISUALS? What visuals? Everytime there was a good visual they showed the audience! Let's just say that I'm very, very disappointed. Rush should never have recorded their most phenomenal tour at such a HUGE venue. I saw this tour at Jones Beach, NY and it was INCREDIBLE! This DVD does not give you the effect that you are experiencing a concert. The camera is too jumpy. Maybe if they focused on the big screens at the concert you would get a better feel of what a Rush concert is all about.
I guess this is what I'm stuck with. I'll just have to keep playing it over and over and maybe it'll grow on me.

Summary: Set list worthy of a farewell -- though I hope not
Review: I haven't been paying too much attention to music in general over the last few years, but Rush has always been one of my favorite bands -- only natural, having grown up in Toronto. I've seen them live a few times, but not since the late 1980s, so I was thrilled to see this DVD on the shelves and sat down to watch it with great anticipation. The set list is amazing -- everything from Working Man ("I get home at five o'clock/Take myself out a nice cold beer" -- great stoner line from the old Rush days but thank God Neil joined after the first album!) to By-Tor and the Snowdog to Earthshine. The variety and breadth of time that it covers almost makes you think that this tour was intended as a swansong. Which, thankfully, it was not.

The sound mix on the DVD sounds fine to me, despite complaints from others that the CD is terribly mixed. I'm no expert, though. I imagine the weather challenges and lack of a sound check on the day in Rio -- as explained in the really interesting "Boys in Brazil" companion documentary -- had something to do with it. And, despite what others have said, I actually loved to hear the Brazilian crowd -- band member number four -- SINGING along to the melody of YYZ!

Geddy, Alex and Neil are better musicians today than they were 20 years ago, and 20 years ago, they were three of the best rock musicians who ever lived. It's amazing to think these guys are 50 years old and still going strong. Rush is the only band that can still have a 10+ minute drum solo -- courtesy of The Professor on the Drumkit, Mr. Neil Peart -- and not turn it into a Spinal Tapian cliche.

I just hope Alex plays "Auld Lang Syne" on the next tour. Ha!!
