Rating: Summary: Great DVD Review: I think many of the reviewers here better stick with Radiohead. THIS IS A POWER TREO!! If you want slick over dubbing watch the Kiss dvd. If you ever seen Rush live this is how they sound, like a POWER TREO. I know Rush is considered by some as a Progressive group but they are a POWER TREO not Yes or Pink Floyd. We are talking about three guys playing in frount of 60,000 screaming people. THREE GUYS!!! No orchestra or horn section or violin player like DMB. Just three guys playing their butt's off. My system is not the best: reciever 600.00 and HDTV 1000 but I think it looks good and sounds good. Not the best I have seen or heard but still great. By the way I have 70 concert dvd's. The best so far are Kiss Symphony, U2 Elevation, DMB's Listener Supported, The Cult music without fear and Heart Alive in Seatle. The worst I have is the Genesis dvd and Steve earl Transendental live. This Rush dvd is not as good as the best ones I have but nowhere near the bad ones. In closing, It might be better if you audiotechno people stick with Ok computer and leave the POWER TREO's to people who who are not so artsy fartsy.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic!!! Review: I, like many others here, have been a fan of Rush for a long time. My first taste of their music came in 1986 with Power Windows. Thereafter I went back through their catalog to the likes of 2112 and Permanent Waves to 'catch-up' as it were and remained current with their music through Vapor Trails. I've never been disappointed. One thing worth asking in deference to critics of this DVD is, wouldn't the fact that this performance was recorded outdoors in a huge stadium have some impact on mixing? I think it unrealistic to expect the energies of a live performance of this magnitude to be recorded with the purity and balance of a multi-track studio session. I certainly don't doubt the quality of other reviewers' systems as they are tuned to their respective eyes and ears. However, it makes sense for us to see and hear things differently and use different equipment in the process. Otherwise, for example, we might all have the same speakers!!! All this being said, I found that one's surround soundfield has to be adjusted no matter what during playback. One can't expect adjustments for movie playback to be appropriate for this. Thereafter I heard clean, tight LF, great separation of guitar and bass lines, and just enough ambient effect to indicate this wasn't some studio overdub. The video was clean and yet raw at the same time, a nice touch reflecting a show in action. All in all, fantastic! Enjoy!
Rating: Summary: A Mixed Bag at Best Review: I am a huge Fan. I have followed Rush for the past 22 years and have been able to catch every tour since Grace under Pressure. I had extremely high hopes for this DVD release. They are perfectionist so this should be a top notch release. Not so.When I put the disc in my player and started with Tom Sawyer my excitement crashed to the floor. The audio was horrible. It wasn't until Earthshine that the sound started to get better. If you are going to listen in 5.1 you will need to crank up your center channel speaker and reduce significantly your surrounds. I can't believe they couldn't do a better mix. As many of the former reviews have stated, at times Geddy's voice and Neil's drums didn't have the presence that they should have. Video quality was average. Too many cut away shots. Too many closeups on the audience- yes, we know that every Rush fan knows all the lyrics too the songs - I don't need to see it. I was hoping for a more film like appearance instead of the home video quality of the show. U2 Elevation Tour is a good example of how to film and mix the sound of a concert in 5.1 That being said, most Rush fans will still find this DVD enjoyable and add it to there collection. I still would have bought it regardless of any poor reviews. Some of the songs look and sound great and some don't. Like I said in the heading - A Mixed Bag at Best. PS. Don't try to blame my equipment, I have invested over $20K in my system and everything else sounds awesome.
Rating: Summary: Simply Awesome Review: This DVD is Awesome. The musicianship of these three guys is incredible. I've seen them live before, and saw them live again on the Vapor Trails tour in Salt Lake City. I was dumbstruck then, and am again after watching the Rio show from this DVD. All I can say is if you are a Rush fan as I am, this is a must have. The set list is perfect. The addition to The Pass on this tour was awesome as it's one of my favorite Rush tunes. Definately a must have. *****
Rating: Summary: A great memento of last year's tour Review: Being a huge Rush fan, I was very pleased to hear that they were releasing both a DVD and CD to commemorate their Vapor Trails tour (which I attended 5 different shows). I have to say that the DVD is great - and I'm glad that I bought it. A lot of people have reviewed it here and stated that the sound quality is poor - they're somewhat correct, but I think that if they bothered to read the liner notes by Neil, they would realize that the recording crew had some limitations and technical difficulties, not to mention that Neil made it sound like it was a late in the tour decision to actually record the show, so the recording might not have been as well planned as it could have been. So with that in mind, I think they did a GREAT job. And come on, it's a RUSH DVD! How awesome to have a memory of the tour! I did play the DVD in Dolby 5.1, and the vocals and bass are drowned out by the crowd and the guitar - the sound seems to be a little unbalanced, but as soon as I switched the audio options to stereo and turned the surround sound off my system, it sounded fine. The video quality is superb. What's really great about the DVD is the documentary, and watching the crowd go absolutely NUTS during the concert. I mean, during YYZ, the crowd was actually singing along with the melody - almost as loud as the music - 40,000 people jumping up and down in unison! I've never been to a Rush show with a crowd that wild and enthusiastic. Totally awesome!! Bottom line, if you are a true Rush fan, you should buy this DVD.
Rating: Summary: Horrible Review: This was a very long awaited DVD. Unfortunately it does not produce. The sound is absolutely the worst I have ever heard. In fact, it sounds worse than a bootleg recording. I understand that in the liner notes they say it was recorded using a very primitive sound truck. Well if that's the case, they had plenty of shows to choose from in North America where the electronic equipment would have been much better. Truly disappointing.
Rating: Summary: Rush Rocks! Review: What a show! I have seen Rush 11 times now live - 4 times on the VT tour - and this is like being there all over again. I wish I had been to the Rio show for myself because that audience was just so into it. More than any other audience I have ever been in. Believe me, that does make a world of difference. The band just semmed to be feeding off of that pure energy and having the times of their lives. The documentary is quite funny. I won't give anything away, but trust me on this one. The only I problem I have with it is the mention of Perfektwerks in the credits. This is a "Gang" indeed in the truest definition of the word. The "gang" there have hurt our community more than anything. Other than this, it is absolute perfection!
Rating: Summary: Rush In Rio DVD Review: A spectacular library of RUSH tunes... this coming from a 20+ year fan of the band. The acoustic offering of "Resist" is beautiful! Buy the 2-DVD set and the 3-CD set NOW, if you are a RUSH enthusiast... I GUARANTEE that you will love them!
Rating: Summary: Any self-proclaimed Rush fan should pick up Rush in Rio! Review: Been into Rush's music for over 2 decades; Seen the boys live at least a dozen times since '85 (7 times on the Vapor Trails tour including shows in Toronto, Vegas, Tampa, FL & Raleigh, NC) and also saw Rush in Rio at a theatre in Tampa last night. It rocked! This dvd package is a must-have for fans of Rush's music and their live performances. Rush in Rio captures an awesome setlist and the band's climactic last stop on the 2002 Vapor Trails tour. I have no issues with the video quality as the detail is excellent (I have a 27" Sony Vega) with plenty of closeups and pans. I agree with the comments about too many quick cuts, however, but not about shots of the crowd, which are actually pretty sparse and short throughout. I do know this - Rush plans another trip to Brazil, I'm going! Those people know how to enjoy a show! I think the sound mix is also excellent with my 2 quibbles being that Neil's drums aren't prominent/loud enough and the crowd noise level during Tom Sawyer; the opening song of the show. Otherwise - Alex & Geddy both shine magnificently in this mix. I have no problem hearing Geddy's bass and vocals and don't have to tweak my setup at all. (I have a Yamaha HTR-5450 receiver with complete 5.1 setup) The documentary is also very, very cool with lots of great one on one footage with Alex, Geddy & Neil. My lone gripe being that Andrew MacNaughton thanks 'the gang at Perfektwerks' in the credits. This 'gang' has done more damage to the online Rush community than Doan's got pills, Carter's got peanuts & Kobe's got lawyers - combined! For shame, Andy, for shame. I give this awesome dvd 4 stars out of 5 because I am a perfectionist and while the dvd rocks and is a must-have, it's not perfect... but then again, what is? ;) Enjoy this dvd for what it is - a true representation of the live Rush experience!
Rating: Summary: This is what fans of Rush have been waiting for. Review: I just purchased the "Rush in Rio" DVD earlier today, and I must say it more than meets my expectations. You can always expect the highest quality where Rush is concerned, from their musical performance, which is second to none, to the quality of the material products they release. Many fans have been waiting for this DVD since the "Different Stages" live cd was released a few years back. The music on "Rush in Rio" covers Rush's thirty year career well, from their initial success in the 70's with songs such as "2112," and "The Trees," through the 80's with "The Big Money" and "Distant Early Warning," and continuing through the 90's and today with "Roll the Bones," "Resist" and "One Little Victory." The running order of the songs work, and the DVD flows well. "Rush in Rio" also offers some cool extras that gives fans an opportunity to see the band behind the scenes for the first time. I strongly recommend this DVD, and it's counterpart CD, to any Rush fan, or anybody else for that matter who enjoys little about the current music scene. If your interested in hearing something different, that is very Rock, but unlike any other Rock music you will hear, give it a try, you won't be dissapointed!
