Rating: Summary: AWESOME "LETTERBOX/DTS" CONCERT DVD !!!! Review: Before I bought this dvd a few weeks ago I read many of the postings about it NOT being in widescreen/letterbox format and the complaints of the sound---while it is not in the superior DTS mode, the 5.1 mix is fine on my sytem, and my system is pretty expensive/good quality, so the complaints about the RUSH Musicologists out there are a bit unfounded to me. I listened in 5.1 and then on a few tracks in 5-channel mode so it was more even through-out all the speakers and it sounded fine there but maybe a bit too much with the sub/bass parts. And I have no idea why so many of the reviewers complained about their DVD NOT being in widescreen (letterbox) format--my copy is---the ENTIRE concert, not the first song or two, the whole show. The crowd is absolutely nuts THROUGH-OUT the ENTIRE show!!!!!! Un-f----in' believable reaction, which I've never seen before. As noted in other reviews, it is amazing to hear the crowd SING the MELODIES of the instrumental songs here, YYZ, La Villa Strangiato (spelling? lol), etc. You'll never hear that in the States and I've seen them on pretty much EVERY tour since Signals in '82 and am a drummer so getting a good seat for sound and visuals is usually my first requirement and am usually successful. This DVD is a must for ANY Rush fan to me!! Go out and buy it now. What are you waiting for?
Rating: Summary: It's live folks Review: I love these clowns...these "audiophiles"... who continue to harp on the sound quality here. Newsflash folks...it's live. By definition that means not perfect. Crowd noise? There were more than 40,000 bodies there folks. That equals crowd noise.Personally I loved it...the DVD and CD. Captures the energy of the live show and shows that there is still some serious enthusiasm out there for this band. Yep, am a long time Rush fan and saw two of the VT shows. And oddly, there were slight differences in sound and performance. Wonder why? Hmmm, could it be because they were live!?! If you want perfect sound and studio perfect performances then these guys have more than enough out there to satisfy that need. You want to see three superb musicians pull of an energetic performance under tough circumstances at the end of a long grueling tour, buy this. The Brazilian crowd is fantastic; the performance is energetic and fun. And seeing these guys play...quick cuts or not...is always a joy. And remember, it's a live show, not a studio performance and is presented as such. Worth every penny in my humble opinion.
Rating: Summary: 5.1 SOUND MIX PROBLEMS ? Review: Rush in Rio sound mix. I'll bet that most of you reviewers of this dvd are listening to it the wrong way (Hea?)Yes, I said the wrong way. What I mean is that you have your HT (Home Theater) system set up WRONG just as I did. After reading countless HT magazines, HT internet reviews and how to get the best performance out of any HT system. I've come to a conclusion for all HT users on how to Properly set up your system. First. you must always keep your center and rear surround speakers set to SMALL, yes SMALL. Second if you are using a sub woofer, you MUST sellect SMALL for ALL speakers in your system, even if you have large front speakers. Second, if you have NO sub in your system you will select LARGE for just your front speakers only. This is the way to go and my system sounds much better and so doe's this Rush in Rio dvd. A Rush fan of 23 years.
Rating: Summary: a BIG disappointment....... Review: I must concur with the assessment that the sound quality of this concert DVD totally sucks.... What a shame. I too looked forward to an intimate document of this super group....the song list was great, but the terrible sound, quick cuts and constant views of the crowd torpedoed this one. Whoever mixed the sound for this really messed up. The crowd was way too loud and sing alongs do NOTHING for me. To see a concert as it should be done check out The Cure's Trilogy DVD set.
Rating: Summary: Triumph of Talent over Adversity Review: Having seen Rush live on 7 occasions since 1978, I felt that this DVD is as near a perfect record of the - quite astonishing -collective musical talent that is Rush, in spite of the effect that rain had on the overall production and sound quality. It restores faith in what human beings can achieve in terms of sheer creative ability; not just limited to technical prowess, but the ability to create expressive, evocative and memorable pieces of rock music. Ok, they are pushing 50, but let's be honest, has there ever been a trio who've been more musically gifted than Neal, Geddy and Alex? I think not. The world is a better place thanks to them. Rating: Summary: Heavy-handed editing ruins a great performance Review: Man, was I looking forward to getting this DVD. When it arrived, I immediately fired up the ol' HT system (cranked to 11, of course), popped it in the player and sat back in anticipation. I turned the TV off after "Earthshine" and just listened to the rest. Maybe I'm getting old, but who can watch more than a few minutes of non-stop multi-angle cutaways? To the production team: this isn't a freakin' TV commercial, guys- you don't need incessant 2 second cuts to hold our attention! If you're goal is to give the viewer a sense of "being there", this is the exact opposite of the way to do that. I'd have been more than satisfied with the poor sound if the video was halfway decent, but watching this truly gave me a headache. Even more maddening is that the band are all in top form. You can tell Alex and Geddy are REALLY into it (who wouldn't be, playing in front of 400,000 screaming, singing fans?), and Neil is his usual amazing self. With a more competent technical staff, this could've been one of the greatest concert DVD's EVER. A real "hack job" in the most literal sense. The bonus videos and features are good, at least, but this DVD has zero replay value for even a huge fan like me. Rent it and 'Rip' it...
Rating: Summary: New World Man's Opinion is Very High; from Stewart T. M. Review: I anxiously awaited the release of the DVD, because one, I was fortunate to be able to see the Vapor Trails show four times, including an August date in Kansas City, after Rush took a 16 day vacation. This was the best Rush show I had ever seen, and this was the 21st Rush concert I had attended over a span of 25 years. But the set list, the sound quality and the obvious exhuberance and "tightness" that the band displayed is what really made/makes the moment special. I was fortunate to be able to see the show again in Houston, San Antonio and Dallas. But to have this show captured via DVD is an absolute treasure for me as well as other Rush fans, I am sure. If you were ever any level of Rush fan, this DVD is the best music concert Rush has done because the 28 camera quality, plus the "live in Rio" setting, the mixing, plus the special set list are just awesome. I would recommend this to any music lover who loves a great live show, and respects precision musicianship. And I have Exit Stage Left, Grace Under Pressure and A Show of Hands concert videos also. But until those are put on DVD, this is hands-down the very best. The interviews done, in an of itself, of the three band mates is extra special on top of the show. Go buy it! Give copies to your best friends. This is the number one music video in the country now. Let us hope for a 30th anniversary tour and video AGAIN. Thanks to Geddy, Alex and Neil for your level of professionalism and respect for your fans. GREAT PIECE OF WORK!!
Rating: Summary: Not a disappointment at all - rather a must have Review: I read the reviews by tmk and gangarunner, and went back to the dvd with a biased ear for the negative. Nope, sorry, I still find no problem with the audio on the dvd. Sure, I can hear the crowd; and I want to! It's a live recording in which the band sounds great, the crowds are as energetic as any, and I feel like I'm back at the concert I attended in August 2002. I also have no problem with the video, and the varied angles. This dvd is much better than I had expected. If you enjoy seeing Rush live, this dvd is for you. If you prefer sitting in a sterile cell listening to contrived studio recordings, you may not want this. And to the Turks out there, (you know who you are), Rush On! Update - I originally received this DVD with a jewel case damaged in such a manner that one disc would not secure. I subsequently wrote Amazon requesting a replacement case. They immediately shipped me an entirely new set, simply asking I return the old set, at Amazon's expense, upon receipt of the new set. Excellent customer service!!!
Rating: Summary: A Just Review Review: Firts, i dont know why everybody is complaining about the sound, i own a PS2 and a normal stereo system and the sound quality is not the gratest, but still very good, compare with other DVDs Concerts. now the concert is spectacular, the song selection is great (well the needed to play X-1 Complete, Red Barchetta and Xanadu)the camara shots are very good and is a 3 Hour Concert, is really something a Rush Fan and anyone who plays Guitar, Bass or Drums should have, The Multiangle songs are maybe the best part of the package, finally i know what Neil is doing in some points in the song. and the documnetary is very good. is you like rush, dont think about the reviews and buy the dvd, you wont regret it
