Description:

Bassist-singer Jack Bruce, renowned for being a part of the short-lived but influential rock supergroup Cream, leads a mid-'80s version of his "Friends" ensemble for this 60-minute concert, filmed at Germany's Rockpalast. And an unusual lineup it is, as Bruce brings together Clem Clempson, a guitarist formerly with the heavy blues-boogie band Humble Pie; Billy Cobham, a versatile jazz drummer perhaps best known for his days as a jazz-fusion pioneer with John McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra; and keyboardist David Sancious, whose credits include membership in one of Bruce Springsteen's early bands. The quartet (plus backup singers) brings a fusion feel to tunes like "X Marks the Spot," but in the end it's the Cream that rises, as Bruce opens with "White Room" and finishes with three more Cream favorites, including "Sunshine of Your Love" and a spirited but too-brief "N.S.U." A decent show, marred by occasionally lackluster performances and fairly dull-sounding audio. --Sam Graham
