Rating: Summary: Depeche Mode at their best!!! Review: Depeche Mode have come a long way (since the 80's). They are my favorite band of all time. No one can match what they have accomplish or gone through. Their best album was violator (with music for the masses coming a close 2nd). But after violator, they went down hill. Dave and his drug habits and alan wilder leaving after the devotional tour. But the band made a major comeback with ultra. They went back to the music that makes them depeche mode. No suprise when they came out with the singles (a.k.a. best of dm).
Rating: Summary: EITHIER YOU REALLY LOVE DEPECHE MODE OR YOU DON'T LIKE THEM Review: DEPECHE MODE IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE BANDS EVER. THERE ARE ONLY A FEW OTHER GROUPS IN MUSIC THAT I LIKE AS MUCH AS DEPECHE MODE. THIER MUSIC INSPIRED ME TO TAKE UP SONGWRITING AND I HAVE WRITTEN SOME GOOD SONGS. I CAN ALMOST PERFECTLY SOUND LIKE DAVID GAHANS VOCALS. I HAVE PRATICED FOR SO LONG AND FOUND HIS VOICE IN ME. IF YOU TRULEY LOVE DEPECHE MODE YOU NEED NO CONVINCING TO BUY THIS DVD. IF YOU CAN EVER SEE THEM LIVE I ADVISE YOU DO. THEY ARE FANTASTIC LIVE. I SAW THEM BACK IN DECEMBER WITH STABBING WESTWARD IT WAS A GREAT SHOW. LETS HOPE THAT THEY TOUR AGAIN.
Rating: Summary: Things to consider before you invest in this: Review: Firstly, I am assuming that anyone considering buying this must already be a pretty big fan of the band so the music is not in question here, it is the collection itself. I myself am a huge Depeche Mode fan and I also collect their videos as well. I bought this at a local music store and spent about 30 dollars for it which I think is unquestionably a large sum of money for ANY VHS tape these days but, being the fan that I am and knowing that I would be getting over two hours of Depeche Mode for my money, I didn't think twice about the investment...Yes, all the songs on the singles album are here in the same order as the cd so you know you're at least getting THAT much. In my opinion though, DM music videos are truly only for the devout fan who also has an extreme liking for music videos in general. I'm not going to say that I truly disliked the music videos because I really didn't--but I found this Tape nearly impossible to sit through and watch in it's entirity. Many of them are in black and white and seem to slow the pace of the songs down in my opinion and tend to show little of what I want to see---THE BAND. The majority of them feature scantly clad, foreign, Super model type women prancing around in various locations. I found the only saving grace of the music videos was really the music itself only the sound quality of the cd itself is much better of course. Did I hate this? NO. I DIDN'T. I found some of the music videos to be quite to my liking actually such as my favorite "A question of Time", "Enjoy the Silence" was also impressive and by far the most popular and well known and the bonus material/ short film which features interviews with the band as they discuss the making of some of their videos as well as the 5 albums featured on this. The problem here in my opinion is that yes, two hours is a lot yet in this case, too much to handle all at once. If you are a fan of a particular DM album, I think you would enjoy "Strange" ( Music for the Masses ) and/or "Strange Too" ( Violator ) much better. Each of these is about half an hour long and features the music videos for the given album in sequencial order ( The whole compialation has a general theme and the music videos are similar to one another and the whole thing plays like a short film. Scenes that end on one music video pick up at the next ). I prefer these because it's much easier ( and enjoyable in my opinion ) to watch a themed set of videos for half an hour than to watch two hours worth. Plus, Those two compialations contain other music videos of songs that were unreleased as singles and thus, excluded from this compialation and these are much cheaper might I add. If you're into Depeche Mode and considering buying one of their VHS tapes then I would also recommend "Depeche Mode 101" as another great alternative to this. No, it's not music videos this time; It's a documentary of their 1987 concert for the masses in Pasadena CA. It features many live tracks and really captures the energy and excitement of DM's music rather than slowing and obscuring it like the music videos tend to do. This also costs about half the price of "The singles 86>98" and is also far more enjoyable. Finally I have dispersed all of my invaluable advice to you but now it's time for your decision. Obviously I am not a big fan of this VHS itself but the three star rating indicates that it is NOT a total waste that you shouldn't still consider buying. Though not as good as a CD obviously, the sound quality is good for a VHS and the picture is also fine ( the fuzzyness in some of the music videos was intentional ). The presentation of everything is also nicely done, indicating the number and track name of what you're about to see next. So basically, you know your taste. If you really aren't a big fan of music videos in general but love DM, I'd steer clear of this one; as it will probably bore you into simply putting on one of your DM cd's instead. If you love music videos in general, love DM, and love to see beautiful women ( Thus, guys will probably enjoy this more than girls ) then you may really like this. But anyone who decides to buy this other than a collector of DM, should really look into all used options of this one; it's a lot cheaper. I hope I have helped you make your decision and thanks for listening to me.
Rating: Summary: Greatest? Review: Great interviewes. Obviously they have picked what they think are their greatest hits. Most fans might have chosen differently. The only bad thing I found was that it wasnt AC3 encoded.
Rating: Summary: very poor quality of the picture!!! Review: Hi, I'm a great DM-fan. And of course I enjoyed all their videos and songs recorded on that DVD. It's a great collection. BUT!!! The picture quality is more than poor! It's terrible! You get the feeling - you are watching a second or third copy of a video recorded from TV on a videotape!!! All their videos up to 1991 are recorded in such a terrible quality!!!!! Videos, that were released later are very good. I was fully dissapointet by that DVD. I have the Videotape with this compilation also and I think that picture quality is much better their. I was very surprised, that such a great (one of the greatest ever) band as Depeche Mode can release a DVD like that. And there are no bonus-DVD-Materials also. It's an exactly copy of the Videotape, simply. If you are a great DM-fan you have to buy that DVD, but I just want you to know what you get when you'll buy it..... Don't make great illusions. Elena.
Rating: Summary: This video is the best! Review: I am actually a fairly new DM fan. I loved the Violator when it came out but I wasn't truely the fan I am today. It's so awesome that DM is still making fans even after so long. I went out and bought every CD and video of theirs and this is my favorte because it has so many videos. 21 videos! It never gets old. I watch it as much as my VCR will allow! It also includes interviews with the members, even Alan. Martin's lyrics have touched me like no other and that's what makes it so easy to watch this video time and time again! You will not be disapointed if you buy this one and if you are anything like me you'll watch it over, and over, and over, and over, and over...
Rating: Summary: Buy extra copies Review: I am not a great writer so let me just get right to it. This is the best DVD I have ever owned. I fact I have purchased it at least 5 times. I keep a spare copy to give as a gift. You will want to have a good sound system hooked up for this one. I did not like the short film much. But the videos are the best.
Rating: Summary: Whats wrong with DM fans! Review: I do not understand some of the really poor ratings and reviews people have been giving this DVD! It is in no way shape or form poor quality or having poor sound! I understand the comments about wanting other rarer music videos on here, or music videos to less popular songs, but this is a DVD of Depeche Mode's SINGLES. Regardless of the want for more music videos this is still a fabulous DVD with a fabulous selection of music videos, I can't see how anyone would be disapointed! I can say nothing more than this DVD definitely deserves a five star rating and that you will enjoy it! Don't just take my word for it, Go purchase the darn thing! Depeche Mode are amazing!
Rating: Summary: Just a port of material realy meant for TV or VHS Review: I have all albums of DM and love their music. I was hoping more of this DVD. Basically it does only the minimum: providing images with songs. No subtitles to have the words, not much details about how the songs I love were born. The Internet gives much more information. A bad example of what can be achieved with DVD.
Rating: Summary: A superb chronicle of the musical growth of an amazing band. Review: I have been a true DM fan since the very beginning. I have listened to Martin's music evolve over the years - getting stronger, deeper and more meaningful - without knowing how the band was "aging". Well, now I know. They, like the music, just get better and better. What a fantastic journey over the last decade +. I remembered how much I loved some songs, and grew to love some even more. Now that I, too, am in my 30's, I enjoy being able to go back to my teens and 20's, revel in the present, and look forward to the future of this band. This is a definate must-have for any insane or sane Depeche Mode fan. The interviews are insightful, the music incredible, and the visual stimulation phenomenal...just like the boys in the band. Kudos all around.
