Rating: Summary: Much Better Representation of '80's MTV than "MTV20/POP": Review: I'll admit, the only reason I picked this up was because it includes Duran Duran's "Save A Prayer" (which surely has to make ANYONE'S short list of "Greatest Music Videos Of All Time...when will DD realize that their fans have grown up and have bought DVD players and REEEEALLY need their first ((Grammy-winning)) set of videos to be re-released on DVD)...but the collection of work that accompanies that centerpiece isn't bad. > Highlights include Culture Club's "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" (still the only song of theirs that I can tolerate), and "She Blinded me With Science", one of the best MTV clips from the early days. Dexy's Midnight Runners makes the list, and AMAZINGLY (and thankfully) enough, "Come On Eileen" is not the song represented. I would have preferred for the Kim Wilde track to have been "Kids In America", but "Cambodia" isn't a bad track. Ultravox's "Vienna" is a good addition (it has to be at least 18 years since I've last heard the song or seen the video), and Heaven 17' "Temptation", The Human League's "Human", and Living In A Box's "Living In A Box" help to complete the lineup. > As this CD is an import, the music selection could be considered to be a bit Eurocentric...but as MTV was essentially Eurocentric for its first 5 (and best) years, this is not a problem for those of us who remember its humble origins. The MTV20 anniversary set that calls itself "Pop" has a bit of a "new wave" flair about it, but in truth this collection offers a better feel for the media genre of music video as parlayed in MTV's earlier years...and even though it lacks the extra features of the MTV collections, the 5:1 audio aspect significantly improves the old stereo sound of the videos...and it's a bit more cost-effective, too. In short, even if you only enjoy two or three of the songs, this video collection will pay for itself within a couple of viewings...grab it ASAP; you can't lose.
