Description:
This is a particularly muscular edition of the Circuit music magazine on DVD, boasting a fair number of profiles of classy artists with strong, iconoclastic talent. What's not to like about a table of contents that includes interviews with and music by Wilco founder Jeff Tweedy, a fine fellow from the No Depression movement who reveals here, for the first time, that his wonderful band has a performance contract rider requiring--no, not the absence of brown M&Ms--but the presence of a morale-boosting puppy backstage at every gig. When you're through drying your eyes over that, move on to XTC's Andy Partridge and Colin Moulding, who get haircuts (say what?) while telling all about their past, present, and future. Then there's Rufus Wainwright, who rolls out some home movie footage of his childhood, talks about his fascinating path as a piano man and evocative composer, and has his praises sung by Van Dyke Parks. (There are also some choice but too-short clips of Rufus in concert.) Had enough? Ha. Sebadoh's Lou Barlow gives a tour of his new home and studio, while bandmates Eric Masunaga and Russ Pollard can be heard on alternative tracks. There's also a fascinating monologue by turntablist-philosopher DJ Spooky, footage of the Roots in concert (with different camera angles that can be accessed), clips from an upcoming documentary about Silver Apples, a video from Natacha Atlas, and scenes from James Meredino's feature, SLC Punk.--Tom Keogh
