Summary: Audio is lacking
Review: Let me first say, I'm not a huge Cars fan, but I did buy this DVD. The audio is 5.1 only and it doesn't sound that great. Rhino does not provide a stereo mix which automatically removes a star from the rating. Why did they do this? There was no 5.1 in 1978 so why didn't they give us a stereo mix in addition to the 5.1 mix?

The video is not that great either. Some of the Musikladen shows filmed years before this (Yes and Roxy Music) look and sound better than this DVD.

The band sounds ok, but because all their songs were over-produced, none of the songs sound like they do on the radio. If you want to hear a band play as well or better in concert than they do on record, check out some Yes or Utopia.

The extras are the only exceptional features on this DVD. Over 46 minutes of new interviews with the band.

Summary: Disappointing
Review: Many great songs are missing. Not very well done - like a home movie done at small bar.

Summary: For the Cars-o-phile
Review: Seeing The Cars in an early small club setting was priceless.
However, since the production quality of this release leaves quite a bit to be desired, I can only recommend it to fans of the band.

Summary: A must for all fans of the band
Review: Sound and picture quality aside, anybody who liked The Cars' music (especially the early material) will get a kick out of this disc. The live performance supports the claim that the band members were great musicians and entertainers.

The interview was a good insight into the background of the band members and how the band came into being. Many fans will be glad that this interview happened before the tragic passing of Benjamin Orr (who was clearly very ill when this was filmed).

Whilst the picture and sound quality aren't up there with the more modern recordings, the true fans will buy this for what's on the disc and not the format it was recorded in.

Buy it!

Summary: For a true Fan its nice to have
Review: The concert recording is not technically good, but its great to see them all in the early years of the Cars. The interview at the end was a nice addition but I find it difficult to view considering Bens physical decline captured here. The Cars will always be one of my favorite bands. They are just what I needed!

Summary: so glad I found this
Review: The highlight of this set to me is watching Greg Hawkes doing the sound effects for the Syd Barret-ish song "I'm In Touch With Your World", an overlooked gem from the debut album. Oh boy, there are other good moments too. Nightspots, another great song from Candy-O is here, as is the frenetic title track from that abum. To bad they didn't do "Let's Go".

The only thing that bugs me about this set is the seemingly bored German crowd they are playing to. They do give give polite applause though after each number. That's OK though because me jumping up and down in front of my TV with the sound blasting offsets this.

The lengthy interview segment is revealing as well, with Elliot Easton doing most of the talking. It's painful seeing the fantastic Ben Orr in poor health. RIP ben.

This is just great for any Cars fan. The songs are pretty much true to the studio versions, and that's OK being the wonderfully crafted hard rock/pop that it is. If you have played your copies of The Cars, and Candy-O to death like me and just need to see the boys doing their thing live, you will love this DVD. Elliot Easton works his guitar out nicely on the track "Take What You Want" which I believe is not on any Cars album.

I don't know what else to say. This is just a treat for anyone who dug this band in their heyday, or like me just re-discovered them recently.

Summary: A historical record of a great band.
Review: There are many appropriate comments and observations in the other reviews listed here. All I will add is that if you ever found yourself defending the authenticity of The Cars , this DVD will prove you correct. I've been a die-hard fan since 1978, and have seen several live concerts, but this offering from Rhino is as up close and personal as it gets.

If you are a Cars fan and have been hedging, plunk down the coin and experience this DVD. Yes, the original media limits the quality of the sound and video, but the performances are a precious bit of rock history. God bless you, Benjamin Orr!

Summary: A real treat for Cars fans!
Review: This DVD is a must have for all Cars fans and is sure to make Cars fans out of newcomers as well. The recent tragic passing of vocalist/bassist Benjamin Orr to pancreatic cancer makes this release extra special for those of us who followed the band, and who continue to long after their breakup in 1988. The live portion shows exactly why they were immensely popular and are regarded as excellent musicians to this day. Their sound was tight, and their musicianship professional. The never released song "Take what you want" is a true testament to the abilities of guitarist Elliot Easton to rock with the best of them. Ben's vocals are at their very best, hitting every note perfectly. Pay special attention to Greg Hawkes performance during "I'm in touch with your world" as he creates every single background sound manually, without the help of synthesizers. Ric's cool stage presence and excellent lyrics make every song fun to listen to. David Robinson's drumming is often overlooked when compared to the likes of Terry Bozzio and Neil Peart, but his performance is tight, concise, and extremely skilled every time, placing him in my top 5 all-time favorite drummers. A bonus for the DVD version is an interview conducted during the summer of 2000 with the entire band. It was truly great to see the guys back together to dicuss their career, though Ben is visibly ill at this point and says very little. My only complaint is that Rhino advertises the DVD as containing a "rare scrapbook with memorabilia" which just does not exist. Buy this DVD!!!
