Rating: Summary: Defective unplayable dvd disc Review: It seems that the dvd ..Yes's house of blues has been going bad. Unplayable in peoples DVD players after about 2 years of being manufactured. When you try to trace it down to the company that made the disc...BEYOND MUSIC" you see by their web address that they no longer exist. At the same time you see people trying to sell these discs for $40-$50. as they seem to be out of print for the moment (Like the AndersonBruford Wakeman and Howe discs that dissapeared after coming out & then being sold in Japan as region 2). Why don't one or all of these YES members due something to help their loyal fans that have been stuck with these "DUD" discs to be able to receive new ones that work?!!! It would be appreciated by all that now have these $20. coasters that are unplayable!
Rating: Summary: Disk Unrecognizable after 18 months Review: I have experienced the same problems with this disk as others who have written.... I purchased about 2 years ago... it played fine the two times I watched it... then I went to play it again the other night and it's not recognized by either my player or my computer - very strange as the disk doesn't have a scratch on it. Anybody else run in to this or have a solution?
Rating: Summary: GREAT BAND, GREAT CONCERT Review: I'VE ALWAYS BEEN A YES FAN, AND THIS CONCERT DOES NOT DISSAPOINT. THE SOUND IS GREAT. JOHN ANDERSON VOICE JUST GETS BETTER. I DON'T THINK I'VE EVER SEEN A LIVE PERFORMANCE BY YES THAT HE DID'NT SOUND GREAT. AS USUAL, THE BAND IS FANTASTIC AND VERY TIGHT. MY ONLY PROBLEM IS THAT I WISH STEVE HOWE WOULD USE A BALLSY SOUND ON HIS GUITAR LEADS ONCE IN A WHILE. SOMETIMES HE SOUNDS WIMPY COMPARED TO THE REST OF THE BAND( I APPRECIATE HIS GREAT TALENT, BUT LET IT RIP SOMETIMES STEVE. ALL IN ALL, A VERY GOOD SHOW. BUY IT.
Rating: Summary: Climbing up The Ladder... Review: For better or worse, Yes has veritably lost that child-like innocence that helped them write early gems such as The Yes Album and Fragile. The four "classic" Yes-men (not including new recruits Igor Khoroshev and Billy Sherwood) are now in their fifties, yet are still playing their hearts out and doing it in style. It may be a bit shocking to a long-time Yes fan to see the band with so many wrinkles and grey, dyed, or bald heads, but as a relative newbie to the band, I find it very admirable that in their later years, Yes is still a live force to be reckoned with.Song selection on this VHS/DVD is skewed towards promoting the "new" album, The Ladder, yet the live performances of Ladder tracks such as Homeworld and It Will Be a Good Day are fun to listen to, and done arguably better than their studio counterparts. Face to Face and Lightning Strikes are two very energetic new tracks off of the album, and are played with fervor on this recording. The only low parts of the performance are And You and I, which seems more dull and drab than I remember it from the studio remaster, and Your Move, which is just a mess. Igor Khoroshev makes a good Tony Kaye/Rick Wakeman, despite what purists may say. His lack of stage presence is disappointing, however. He seems too modest about his skills. Billy Sherwood need not have been at the show at all. No one but he could hear his guitar, except on rare instances such as Owner of a Lonely Heart and Cinema, and selected tracks from The Ladder. He does, surprisingly, repeat a small solo during the performance of Awaken, however. There are times when I would see Billy wailing away, soloing on his guitar, and all I could hear was Steve playing "rhythm guitar." Such was the case in the middle portion of Yours is no Disgrace. High points of the show include, but are not limited to, the extended version of Yours is no Disgrace, with the "Firebird Suite" at the beginning, the extended Steve Howe guitar solo, and the climactic build-up at the end, and a rockin', crowd-jumpin' All Good People. Awaken, the sole "long-form" tune of the concert, is a beautiful, moving piece of epic musicianship that never fails to strike a chord in my heart, no matter how many times I watch it. Check out Chris' triple-neck bass guitar during the song! Excerpts from Time and a Word and Ritual break up the show in fine fashion, as does the Cinema/Owner of a Lonely Heart suite with Steve Howe's extended solo, but I could have done without hearing a shortened version of Roundabout (No milk bottles? What were they thinking!) If you want to see a show with a better, more diversified song selection, try Keys to Ascension or Yes Symphonic Live. If you just want to sit back and enjoy good tunes, snatch this one up. Yes may not be young anymore, but they still put on a great show.
Rating: Summary: The House of Yes - DVD Review: Since the early '70s Yes has written inspirational words backed by haunting musical muses. As a longstanding fan this DVD provides 15 classic tracks with crystal clear images that 'set you sailing'. Jon Anderson's voice sores to great heights - although not as far as 20-30 years ago. Nevertheless the unique sound is still there. Steve Howe's guitar playing is quite fantastic especially on PerpetualChange. Chris Squire provides the depth at bass while Ivan Khoroshev, while not Rick Wkaeman, does classic Yes justice. Yours is No Disgrace and Perpetual Change set the tone for that Yes magic. But, possibly their best work ever, And You And I, is sensational and shows the artistry of all performers. Personally the rarely performed Awaken stirs the emotions and is worth the price of the DVD alone. What did disappoint me however was the fleeting attention given to Tales from Topogrpahic Oceans - Ritul: Nous Sommes Du Soleil; fabulous exerpts could have been done of Jon and Steve's solos. Lightening Strikes, The Messenger, Your Move and Roundabout more than make up for this. The House of Yes is a great work. It has even impressed my 15 year old - a new generation of YES folk lurks. Yes - Symphonic Live is a must next.
Rating: Summary: Solid Performance, but Disc Exhibits Playback Problems Review: I thoroughly enjoyed the performance, I thought the 5.1 audio mix was good, better than their previous DVD efforts, song selection was well chosen. I have a strong playback system and the sound will play as loud and clear as anyone would want. The video is crisp with no artifacts. I recommend purchasing the disc. My problem is the disc had problems cueing up in the system after about two years. The disc first started skipping and now is unplayable. It has no dirt, smudges, or scratches. It is almost as though the DVD has deteriorated over time. ... As an endorsement of the performance, I have replaced the disc with a new one which plays fine (for now). ... This is the first disc I have had this problem with. Very unusual.
Rating: Summary: Yes...but then again ....No Review: Well as much as I would love to give this live in concert outing a great review I feel it fails in several areas, firstly the camera never seems to be in the right place at the right time.I think it is good to be able to see that all the band members are contributing to the sound ,but not during a Steve Howe solo.During a Steve Howe solo I want to see Steve,He is one of the worlds best guitarists and I want to see his fingers dancing on that fretboard( not Jon Anderson dancing or adding percussion). Then ,although the sound quality is great Chris Squire is buried far too low in the mix( This is Chris Squire we are talking about here and he should be UP in the mix, WAY UP) The new material I have yet to really decide on but overall something is missing from this performance and that something is passion.I am not saying that the guys are going through the motions here but they are certainly not on fire and that , for me ,spoils this concert. There are moments where they seem as if they are just about to take the leap into the indefinable IT,but it never quite happens. Part of the reason ,I believe ,is the drumming of Alan White who seems content to plod along behind the band with little sense of purpose and no urgency at all.A great drummer knows when(and how) to drive the other musicians to that moment and beyond( can I mention Bill Bruford here?). Overall I think it is great that the guys are still playing and there are lots of things to enjoy about this disc ( Jon Andersons voice although a little gruffer is still one of the most distinctive , endearing and uplifting in rock) but it left me feeling uninvolved, and for Yes ,that is not enough.
Rating: Summary: This DVD sucks Review: I know yes since 1975 and love the gruop, but the mix in this DVD is cold, sterile, the bass is buried and brutally compressed,. Iam sorry, but it is the sad true, Better get yessongs dvd, 900125 live dvd and the very good live in amsterdam dvd.
Rating: Summary: technical problems with the disc Review: Has anyone else had problems with this disc playing in their player? All of my DVDs work fine, except for this one. It is not scratched or anything. Unfortunately I don't have my receipt or I'd take it back. I'm just curious if anyone else had this problem. I want to know before I go and buy another copy.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Capture of an Interesting Phase of Yes Review: A huge fan of the band, I've seen Yes about a dozen times since 1994 and my favorite performance was when I saw them during this tour. Taken from The Ladder Tour in 1999, _House of Yes - Live from House of Blues_ captures a legendary band still excited and passionate about making new music. Apart from 1994's Talk Tour, Yes really hadn't toured to heavily support a new studio album in quite some time when they embarked on The Ladder Tour in the fall of 1999. For the most part, Yes' touring in the 90s was more about playing the oldies and maybe a track or two from a new studio album. That is why this is probably one of the best DVDs of the band because it not only shows a band proud of their past work, but also energetic and proud about their new work. _The Ladder_ was a very good album and the band performs lively, passionate versions of "The Messenger", "Face to Face", and "Lightning Strikes", as well as the excellent "Homeworld" and "It Will Be A Good Day", the latter of which features a blistering outro guitar solo from Howe that is not found on the studio version. It's great to have songs from _The Ladder_ represented on a DVD concert performance. In addition, the extra bonus feature is very good as it shows the band in the studio, and interviews nearly every member of the band and producer Bruce Fairbairn. And if you're not a fan of _The Ladder_, this DVD is not without the classics/epics. "Roundabout", "Yours Is No Disgrace", "Owner of a Lonely Heart", "And You And I", and "I've Seen All Good People" are all here. Yes also pulled out some songs that had not been played in a while such as "Perpetual Change", "Awaken", and the 90125 instrumental "Cinema." I was only disappointed that the DVD (and accompanying live album) didn't include "Hearts" which was also performed live during this tour. If I was trying to get someone into Yes and wanted to give them a DVD to show different sides of their careers all on one collection, this would definitely be one of my top choices. A must if you're a big fan of the band - you will not be disappointed. And for the newer fan, a very good starting point.
