Description:
Probably the best guitar band of the late '80s and early '90s, Southern California rockers Tesla had frizzy hair but also had musical chops far ahead of their contemporaries. This 16-video collection is a journey Tesla fans will gladly take, since the band--aside from its Top 10 hits "Love Song" and "Signs"--was definitely not a singles machine. These videos showcase a group more interested in its music than its image, even if the songs from the band's debut, Mechanical Resonance, display five guys with lacquered hairdos. With several videos from their two best albums, The Great Radio Controversy and Psychotic Supper (all nine videos of which are included here), Tesla became the preeminent straight-ahead rock band, combining radio-friendly melodies with harder-edged guitar riffs and rhythms. Notable for their omission in these videos are the requisite bimbos, with the amusing exception of "Need Your Lovin'," which parodies all of the rock-video clichés Tesla so smartly left out of their own work. --Kevin Filipski
