Rating: Summary: Amazing Review: The Chilis never cease to amaze me...after getting the "Off the Map" DVD, i had to buy this one...its great now to have both of them...first in "Off The Map" I got to see them live and get a small insight of the band through the interviews...this DVD was much more centered on the band itself, and the recording process. For all other die hard Chili fans out there it was really cool to hear what they all had to say about the album...and I loved watching Flea coming up with some crazy stuff basically from the top of his head...All in all...GREAT DVD...if all you want to see Chilis live...buy "Off The Map"...if you want to get to know the band even better...buy "Funky Monks"!
Rating: Summary: hilarious and meaningful Review: this documentary of the making of BSSM shows the carefree, crazy, and loving commeraderie of the band, while also giving you a true sense of what it is like to make such an important record. this was long before anyone knew exactly how enormous of a hit it would be, so what you see is a poignant testament to how important music itself is to the band. it is filmed in a gorgeous way, like an old glamorous film, but there is no glamour added here. its is simply four enthusiastic men with a lust for life and music doing what they do best. even they are a classic hollywood band, there isn't a shred of pretense, posing, or self consciouness. inspiring and at times very funny. 5 stars.
Rating: Summary: Great DVD for musicians Review: This DVD is about the story of a LA rock band recording their best album ever (they didnt know it) in a mansion in Laurel Canyon with producer Rick Rubin. This is mainly a DVD for hardcore fans, or any musician who likes to see what its like to record an album with rick rubin in a big mansion! its amazing. its a very relaxed vibe. its a non-narrator documentary of the recording of BSSM. There are short interviews with each member and short clips of them recording songs and parts (excellent). Anthony explains Under The Bridge, Flea talks about his bass playing, john talks about masturbating, Chad likes his motorbike. This is 60 mins (too short in my opinion) and in black and white. dont let the color intimidate you, it goes perfect with vibe. the sound quality is excellent. This doesnt contain any of their music videos, or live on stage performances. i made an audio cassette tape of this and put it in my car so i could listen to it elsewhere, i liked it that much. if you like the chili peppers and like the studio, this is a MUST. if BloodSugarSexMagik is your favorite album... they you NEED THIS. thank you have a nice day aim:howdthattaste
Rating: Summary: met my high expectations Review: this dvd was spectacular. I liked the focus it put on John, who is my guitar idol and my biggest influence. It gives insight on the type of environment that the Peppers flourished in, as well as a look at what fuels them as musicians. The interviews were excellent. More of it would have been really cool (only 60 minutes), but this was well worth it.

Rating: Summary: The Funky Monks Review: This DVD, IF I HAD IT, would be the pride of my collection. I've seen it before and the quality is great, and the music, as only the Chili Peppers can do it, is awesome as well. Sadly, the shipping is taking longer than I expected, so I'll give you all a peice of advice, get the speedy delivery if you want to get it within the next millenia. Anywho, this DVD, as I said, has some notable parts, as well as some the normal person would like to forget, but as I not being normal, I enjoyed it immensely. John Frusciante has some excellent anecdotes. If you are a diehard fan, and enjoy the bands many silly anecdotes, I recommend this DVD highly!
Rating: Summary: The big breakthrough Review: This film was an excellent insight to the creation of in my opinion, one of the most beautiful records ever produced! it showed the flowing creativity and pure emotion these guys poured into this record, and the influence Rick Rubin had in helping mold these elements into something great. It was a very intimate film - it made you feel like you were right there hanging out with the guys, and witnessing the magik they created together in that house. It also gave you a feeling that you knew each one of the guys equally instead of focusing on Anthony and Flea, which is definitely an added bonus. If you're a pepper fan and haven't seen this yet....go see it!!!!!!!!!!!! if you aren't a big fan, but like the record, or need some creative inspiration....go see it!!!!!!!!!!
Rating: Summary: More interesting now than then Review: This is an unconventional B&W look at the behind the scenes situations surrounding the recording of "BloodSugarSexMagik". It's endlessly entertaining to watch the two musical geniuses of the band, Flea and John Frusciante, at what is widely regarded to be their creative peak. It's almost hard to watch Frusciante when you consider the path his life took soon after the film was shot. But he's back in the band now, and this video shows us all exactly what pure musicianship is all about.
Rating: Summary: A magic time for Knuckleheads Review: This is not a documentary film and not a collection of videos, nor is it a live concert. It is a still-life portrait painted monochrome at the end of the 20th century. It is a gem - something precious - a hand-walking-talking snap shot of magic in the making. It is a glimpse into the magician's hat - a rare chance to see what goes on in the making of celebrity. I have a pretty good idea of what went on in the making of this jem. Director Gavin Bowden managed to do something truly incredible. He was a one man show and able to get things on film (not video) which would have been impossible for a crew. He deserves great praise for this 'missing link' film. Now that film making has better bridged the gap between analog and digital technology, projects like this stand out as one-of-a-kind. It was a magic time. The peppers had just signed with Warners, who had promised to put the kind of money into promotion that would bring the band to the next level of success. This experimental film and the wonderful Videos for 'Give it Away' from Stephane Sednaoui and 'Under the Bridge' from Gus VanZandt were all part of that promotion. As tanks rolled through the streets of LA to celebrate the US gulf war victory, John Frusciante sits up in the monk's cloister and tries to make sense of what has happened to him. He is the pretender to the soul of the film trying to fill the gap in the band left by the death of guitarist Hillel Slovak. Hillel's ghost haunts the mansion and the making of Blood Sugar Sex Magic. The true soul runs throughout the film in Flea's moody bass line. Anthony later takes over with a candid glimpse into a not so glamorous past. Every once in a while I buy a copy for a friend and read the reviews on Amazon.com to get a feeling for how it is still received. I am always pleased with the intelligent and positive responses which seem to transcend the usual fanaticism surrounding the band. Something to listen for when you watch this film is the thoughts on knuckleheadism - as they have become prophetic. The boys love the Three Stooges. Think about the success of Eminem and what market buys his music. Apparently having serious opinions about serious issues requires a little wackiness to get it to sell. The Beastie Boys broke out as knuckleheads, the Peppers perpetuate and Eminem is the Elvis of Knuckleheads. I reckon that before too long the pattern will be better exposed and no longer funny. In the meantime enjoy 'the sophistication of having fun' made simple for everyone when the Chili Peppers sing the Thelonius Monster classic lyrics, 'gotta - Metalica T-Shirt! gotta - little tiny baby mustache...' in this wonderfully enigmatic film. (Please try to look beyond all spelling errors and poorly supported ideas. Tis but a review on Amazon.com...)
Rating: Summary: Worst documental Review: This is one of the worst documentals I've seen, I LOVE the Red Hot Chili Peppers, but I'd rather buy a music cd than this! DO WHATEVER YOU WANT but this is really B_O_R_I_N_G.
