Rating: Summary: Correction to review Review: "But Not Tonight" wasn't from the film "Earth Girls Are Easy"... it was from "Modern Girls", released in 1984 and starring Virginia Madsen. The band originally wrote "Stripped" with the intention of it being included on the "Modern Girls" soundtrack, however the director prefered the B-side tune of "But Not Tonight". The band demanded the soundtrack be re-released with "Stripped" and won- very few copies of that movie's soundtrack can be found with "But Not Tonight". And in further protest, the band has never played it live. I have seen a promo copy of this new DVD release and the 2nd disc with all the extras is truly a gem in all that glitters surrounding Depeche Mode. As a fan of the band for 21 years, I highly recommend this set for anyone wanting to complete a DM collection or to start one.
Rating: Summary: Great video compilation, but... Review: ...there are still alot of missing video clips from 86>98, and the sound and picture could have benefitted from a better mixing and mastering job, especially in 5.1 surround sound. Also, since they weren't included on the "ONE NIGHT IN PARIS" DVD, the videos from EXCITER should have been included. Here's what should be instead:DEPECHE MODE - VIDEOS 86>98+ DVD 1: 1. Rating: Summary: Finally 4 Rare videos and Documentaries!!!! Review: Although this DVD will be release on November 25th 2002, Here is what I know. It's 2 disk set. Disk one has the same videos as the original "86-98" DVD. The second disk will include 4 rare Music videos. Here is the list 1) "But Not Tonight" ( from the film "Modern Girls!!!"){Thanks for the correction} 2) Strangelove '88 (US Version) 3) One Caress (US Video) 4) Condemnation (Paris Mix). it will also include 3 short films: Short Films (Electronic Press Kits): 1) Violator Electronic Press Kit (E.P.K.) - February 13th, 1990 Interview with David Gahan and Martin Gore. Very good and funny. It includes outtakes from " Enjoy The Silence" and "Personal Jesus". 2) Songs Of Faith And Devotion Electronic Press Kit (E.P.K.) - January 27th, 1993 Interview with Martin, Andrew Fletcher, Alan Wilder, and David. Very interesting. 3) Ultra Electronic Press Kit (E.P.K.) - February 26th, 1997. Very Good. Interview with David, Andrew, and Martin. All I can tell you is "GET IT!!!"
Rating: Summary: Close but no cigar Review: As many probably figured out by now, this is pretty much a rehash of the previous DVD release from DM. It's a rehash of Videos 86-98, and the extra short films and videos (E.G. But Not Tonight) is pretty much what you're shelling out the extra dough for. For those who didn't get the original DVD it's definitely worth getting, but it might not be worth putting out the extra cash if you have it already. Now if they included the earlier videos from 81-85 (gotta love Just Can't Get Enough...and the pre-Alan Wilder days!), then it might be a worthwhile package....
Rating: Summary: Great video collection from a great band Review: Depeche Mode 86-98 is a great colection of videos. There are several very entertaining videos, from as early as stripped to useless and everything in between. however, there is no halo video! that was one of the best depeche mode videos ever in my opinion. i was very dissapointed at that. Overall, this is a great buy. If you really want the halo video, get the "strange too" VHS.
Rating: Summary: Might not be worth it. Review: Disc 1 of this package was already released in 1998 and you can read my review of that DVD for info on the wonderful videos contained therein. I'll just talk about the extras from disc 2.
But Not Tonight is a very cheesy, totally 80s video. Footage of the band performing the song interspersed with footage from the movie Modern Girls. Wasn't worth including in my opinion.
Strangelove '88 is again, totally 80s but still a good video. Not nearly as great as the kind of stuff that Anton Corbijn was doing for them at the time, but not bad. The whole band is dressed in white and of course Dave was always so able to pull off that look.
One Caress has been much maligned but I quite like it. Kevin Kerslake has always been one of my favorite video directors. While the concept is a little flaky, the video is still really beautiful. Lots of gorgeous colors and Alan and Fletch look really striking in it because of the way they were filmed. Martin's amish-esque outfit is quite laughable, however.
Condemnation (Paris Mix) is a totally different video from the live version lifted from Devotional. This is a nice looking sepia toned video. Again, kind of a flaky concept here, with Dave being led off by a group of people and at the end he is chained and shackled to an attractive woman (a model who I've seen many times over the years, but who isn't famous) and is 'condemned to love'. I do love the intense facial expressions that Dave gives to the camera.
The Violator EPK is shot in a very attractive shade of blue and only Dave and Martin are interviewed for the film. A bit boring compared to the other 2 EPKs on the DVD, but still very cool. Dave appears jittery. Must have been starting on the drugs around this time.
The SOFAD EPK is very interesting because all of the band members have changed so much by this time and we get an interesting look into the atmosphere of DM's creative peak. Dave is in all his tattooed and long haired glory. Martin has a confused female visitor (a girlfriend, I guess) in the middle of his interview.
The Ultra EPK is again, an interesting look into the DM that had been on the verge of falling apart but which came out on top with a wonderful and triumphant album. Very cool cinematography and transitions in this one.
All in all, this is definitely the best choice for anyone who didn't own the original release, but if you already have it, you may not want to bother. I give the whole package 4 stars because disc 1 is 5 star material but disc 2 is kind of hit and miss.
Rating: Summary: Excelent by miss the 81-85 videos Review: Disc one is already known by everybody. Disc two contains rare videos which I like them most. But the best of disc two are the EPK, the interviews. The best one for me is the corresponding to SOFD (songs of faith and devotion), seeing Dave in a very religious situation, seeing a happy-girl entering Martin's room, etc. I like it very much, but I still miss the 81-85 videos, and it is very difficult to get that VHS tape. Now, please: RELEASE THE DEVOTIONAL in DVD, Thans
