Rating: Summary: PNYC DVD Rules.... Review: I already owned the VHS tape... but when I saw the extra content that was offered on this DVD I had to buy it. BEAUTIFULLY DONE and worth it at twice the price. Dolby 5.1 audio, cool menus, and material unreleased in the U.S. and of course, then there's the MUSIC.
Rating: Summary: Just wonderful Review: I have fews words to say about it. This DVD is just wonderful and Portishead is just the best! Caution is advised: if you are thinking to commit suicide don't listen that, it is extremely absorbing and depressing. That is the greatest quality of Portishead.
Rating: Summary: Completely mind-blowing Review: I have quickly gotten into Portishead in the past week, buying their two studio albums, this DVD and also the CD that was put out with 11 of the 15 tracks from the DVD. I watched this DVD last night and it was absolutely mind-blowing. It made me want to vomit it was so good. I can't believe I didn't know of Portishead before. While I watched it (and then the extras also), I couldn't believe that a band could be so good, so cool, so dark. There's not one happy song and every song is darker than black and just DIRTY. No modern band can touch this music. This DVD is insanely good. A must for anyone who knows good music.
Rating: Summary: AMAZING!!! Review: I love Portishead, although I haven't been a fan for long. Many of the reviews I read about this item were from the VHS that I have not seen, but let me tell you, the DVD is more than worth it. If you have the VHS version, you will still want to get a copy of this DVD. The performance during the show is wonderful, and the fact that it has more songs than the CD version is a plus. Although, visually, there isn't a whole lot going on, it is something great to watch. The way it is filmed more than makes up for the lack of eye candy. In fact, this lack might be what makes it so wonderful to watch. For once, we have a band and their music instead of an enourmous amount of visual distraction. The fact that the whole DVD doesn't always focus right in on Beth (as most music DVD's would do), is a plus. We get a feel for the whole band and the New York Philharmonic as well. A good chunk of the shots are taken from overhead, just to give a good feel for where we are when we are watching. If you don't own the VHS, then the show alone is worth getting this DVD for. But what makes it great for the VHS owners is the special features. "To Kill a Dead Man" is an interesting short film that I enjoyed, and the videos for their singles are pretty well done also. All in all, this is a great DVD, a must have for any Portishead fan!
Rating: Summary: Simply amazing Review: I only wish I could have gotten tickets to this performance; everything about it is beautiful. The environment could not have been better for such a performance, and this DVD comes as close to the live experience as one can get.Musically, Portishead has always seemed like a bit of a paradox to me -- they have these incredibly funky trip-hop beats (that you can't possibly sit still to while listening) and incredibly depressing lyrics, sung with a voice that can only be described as sultry. The orchestra only elevates this experience -- it is not just glam-rock excess (i.e., Metallica's S&M); every instrument in the orchestra pit fulfilles a purpose. You might be surprised as to just how well record scratching goes over a string and brass section! And of course, there's the vocals -- as other reviewers have said, Beth has never sounded better, and this DVD is no exception. The emotion she brings to the songs is unmatchable. To hear all this in 5.1 surround is worth the price of admission many times over. As for the DVD-specific issuses; the video quality is quite good, and the sound (of course) is excellent. Extra viewing angles would have been nice, but ultimately are not neccesary to the experience. The menus are all very well organized (which seems to be the exception nowadays), and the extras are quite good on their own. My only real complaint is that in the middle of the show, they have a brief interlude of them setting up and practicing before the show. This is annoying, but really not enough to detract from the whole. Previous to getting this DVD, I had only heard Dummy and the self-titled album. Now I must also get this performance on CD. It's not so much better than the studio albums as it is different. Overall an excellent album/DVD and a must-buy for anyone who even remotely enjoys Portishead.
Rating: Summary: Simply amazing Review: I recently purchased this DVD and it is simply amazing. The excellent way in which it is filmed along with the awesome stage set up (band grooving with orchestra), puts the viewer into a trance that sooths the soul. Anyways great set list and sound quality. I promise if you are a fan of Portishead this DVD is a must buy.
Rating: Summary: what can i say Review: i watched thes video last night. i don't want to say a lot off words about this. i want to say one thing. Go and buy it. it is awesomeeeeeeeeeeee....
Rating: Summary: A powerful performance from THE deities of trip-hop Review: I'd heard of Portishead after seeing the then-just-released video of "sour times" and was immediately in love. No band has succeeded in touching the dark brooding depths that this band can reach while still avoiding cliched whining so rampant in today's music (staind anyone?) The only complaint I could honestly come up with is that many of the songs seem almost TOO close to the original, as though they're so flawlessly done that the DVD version is simply an orchestrated version of the original with less nuance and improvisational punch of other live recordings I've heard. Overall this is a powerful performance by Portishead and I highly recomment it to any fans of intelligent music.
