Rating: Summary: WISH I COULD'VE BEEN THERE! Review: I have been a fan since 1976 and missed this tour. Now that I have this DVD, I feel like I've been there. In the comfort of my home, I can rawk out anytime day or night because this DVD makes you feel like you're on stage with them. Ann and Nancy once again prove to be the best writers, muscians and entertainers that this generation has seen!! THIS IS A MONGER MUST!!
Rating: Summary: Thanks for the memories Review: I have been a musician for most of my life, which unfortunately makes me overly critical of music videos as a rule. I enjoyed virtually every song on this DVD and would recommend it to anyone in a heart beat (no pun intended)! It seems that they could have planned their set a little more carefully to maximize the momentum of the performance but the quality of the music is simply fantastic. Your money could not be more well spent than to buy a copy of this. Enjoy!
Rating: Summary: Bravo Review: I love this DVD! Ann and Nancy Wilson prove that they are to of the best female proformers on the planet. Ann's voice sounds great. Nancy is one of the best female guitarest. Their vocal harmonies are like ear candy. The whole band sounds tight. They have gotten better with age and have work hard to master their craft. Their covers of Led Zepplin are outstanding. They have stood the test of time. If you collect music DVDs I feel this is a must buy.
Rating: Summary: Great sounding DTS Review: I own about 70 concert dvd's and this own is one of the best sounding. Maybe if you are listening to it in regular sterio it sounds bad. The mandolin in The battle of evermore is unbelievable. In so many live dvd's the singers voice sounds nothing like it does in studio recordings. I say Heart sound better live than they do in the studio. To tell you the truth I wasn't that much of a Heart fan before watching this dvd. I am now.
Rating: Summary: This is a "MUST HAVE" DVD Review: I was an average fan of Heart (at the most) prior to seeing this DVD, but, this is one of the best produced Rock N Roll DVDs on the market. Their version of Black Dog blows away Zeppelin's just released (May 2003) version. I played both Zeppelin and Heart's version of Black Dog for several friends - and all agreed that Heart's version was the best. All of the songs are excellent and far superior to the conventional studio mix. The video is excellent, too. Check out the credits: they play Barricuda at a sound check with almost no singing - it sounds great. My review is based on a DTS surround sound system. This is a "must have" DVD!
Rating: Summary: Great performance by Heart, DVD production could be better Review: I've been a Heart fan since their first album. Ann's vocal's are flawless, she seems to be stronger than ever. Add Nancy's sweet voice and mastery of a broad range of stringed instruments, and a well-chosen cadre of musicians to round out the band, and you have a group that really delivers, they are really a treat to listen to. This is NOT a band that is trying to milk past success.
I really hope Heart puts out a DVD that chronicles each of their tours in the current and coming years. However, I also hope they select a different production company for any future DVDs. While the music itself - the performance of the band - is flawless (seriously, the band members are technically at the pinnacle of proficiency), and the audio quality of the DVD is excellent, the visual experience could be better. The camera/editing work is just plain sloppy. The camera people couldn't hold a shot, couldn't frame correctly, didn't seem to be familiar with the music. I'd be surprised if they've ever shot a concert before. The camera work seemed to be done by amatuers (and I'm not saying this from a position of ignorance). Editing often showed the wrong musician when another was playing a solo, camera shots often strayed.
Just as irritating as the sloppy camera/editing, the audio mix is slightly out of sync with the video.
With that said, I will admit that I would still buy the DVD knowing what I know now - without any hesitation. The DVD is watchable. But, it could have been so much better. So much.
Some of the high points:
"Alone": Ann and Nancy's harmonies in this song sent chills up my spine - they are second to nobody in this song. I think this song showcases their musical talents very well.
"Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters": This Elton John piece is sung by Nancy as she plays a twelve string guitar (I believe with a special stringing - see her guitar video). This piece showcases Nancy's talents very well. Ann joins in beautiful harmony and provides backing guitar. I listen to this one by itself if I have a few extra minutes between chores once in a while.
"Battle of Evermore": Ann and Nancy do justice to the Led Zeppelin classic.
"Barracuda": It's a great song!
I'd give the _performance_ itself a "5". I'd give the camera and editing work a "2", and the audio gets a "5".
I'd have given the performance a 5+ if Nancy had done the Silver Wheels intro to Crazy on You!
Rating: Summary: A great accompanying DVD for "Road Home DVD" Review: I've said it before, and I will say it again. Ann and Nancy Wilson are two of the most talented musicians in this world. I am thrilled to see them back in fine form, evident from this DVD. Ann's voice is top-notch, and Nancy Wilson's guitar playing is incredible (she works so hard on stage). I also own "The Road Home" DVD which was filmed in Seattle in 1994. In my personal opinion, it is a better concert because the track list is more interesting. My main criticism with this new concert (also filmed at the same theatre in Seattle) is the tracklist contains two much new material and covers. The quality of the new material and covers are good, but I would have liked to see classic songs such as "Dream of the Archer" included. This DVD is also bare-bones in that the only special features are a photo gallery and production notes. Unlike the wonderful "Road Home DVD" which boasted an array of extras. Even though Heart were supposedly at a crossroads when the "Road Home" concert was filmed, it is a much more enjoyable concert, and one that I recommend more than this new one. Hell, just buy both ... you won't be disappointed.
Rating: Summary: Better than ever Review: If you are a Heart fan, you won't be disappointed...if you are not a Heart fan, you will be (a fan that is!). Ann's voice has only become more soulful and ever more beautiful since the 70's and the talent of these two ladies never ceases to amaze me. I was lucky enough to have seen this tour live, and the DVD is a great way to relive the concert...turn on your surround sound and CRANK IT UP-the Wilson sisters RAWK!
Rating: Summary: THIS DVD IS GREAT! Review: If you are even slightly a Heart fan...this DVD will rock your world. The Wilson sisters still have their voices (although the rest of them has aged...as we all have). They do some fantastic work on this DVD and the sound is spectacular. The reviewer that said the sound was bad must have left his heaphones unplugged. My walls were shaking and windows rattling on this one. Great rendition of Led Zeppelin's "Evermore" and plenty of great songs on this one....5 stars...trust me you'll love it!
Rating: Summary: These gals rawk! Review: If you're a long-time Heart fan, then you're in for a treat. Although not every era of their career can be covered in a 100-minute set, this concert comes darn close. Ann looks and sounds absolutely amazing. She's completely reenergized and totally on top of her game. Nancy is everything you expect her to be. The band plays very well together (even if they stick to the album arrangements a little too closely for my taste on many of the songs). The DVD features five new songs that will be on the new Heart album, promised for this Spring. Of these, the two best are "Sister Wild Rose," a really great rocker, and "Heaven," a very atmospheric song that features Nance playing her guitar like a cello. You gotta see it! Being a nit-picker, I would have rated this disc a 4.5, only because of the song set. Too many slow songs, all right in a row! This takes the energy level of the concert down a bit, even though some of the true highlights of the concert are the acoustic tunes. For instance, the true emotional peak of the concert is a wonderful performance of "Mistral Wind." Absolutely breathtaking at times, and drummer Ben Smith plays like a passionate fiend. And "Dog and Butterfly", played by Ann and Nance without the band, is stunning. "These Dreams" is rather bland, and seems a bit out of place, as they have returned to playing the album version rather than the very nice acoustic version they did in the Road Home shows. Also out of place is "Wild Child" as an encore. Seems an odd choice to me. It's an okay song, but there is much better material from that era (heck, from that album) they could have chosen. And it certainly seems weak as an encore, especially when paired up with an absolutely smokin' cover of Zepp's "Black Dog". Similarly, although performed extremely well, "Dreamboat Annie" is very anti-climatic as the final encore of the evening. In spite of the complaints, this is a fantastic concert, and well worth any Heart fan's (or classic rock fan's) dime. A bunch of great Heart classics ("Love Alive" is, in my opinion, the best song Heart ever wrote, and it blazes here), five excellent new tunes, two feiry Zepp covers... Its as close to the perfect Heart show as you can get! Alan
