Summary: Down and Brilliantly Dirty
Review: Everything from glimpses of the jubilant audience to the guy sitting off to the side of the stage with a bottle of wine serves to make this document of a bygone era a little treasure. It is one of the two DVDs I own because in fact it is like owning an audio CD, and who the hell wants to watch some movie over and over again anyhow? This on the other hand provides something new each time, as does I suspect any documentary. Moon is the consummate showman. Daltrey is like a beautiful little girl, while the musicianship of the Ox and the shark are unsurpassed. It is a festival for the eyes and ears, even if you're not a fan.

Summary: Not as advertised
Review: First of all, even on the record, i don't think that this was by any means one of The Who's best shows. Compare 'young man blues' to the version on Live at Leeds. This was an off night.

Then the absolutely horrific butchering by the editors of the Tommy material. What were they thinking? Drove me up the wall. Just awful.

All and all, 3 stars because it's the greatest live band (by far) there has ever been in rock history, but really a shoddy production. The people who put this thing together should be embarrassed.

Summary: Haste Makes Profits
Review: I agree with many here. There are always these shortcomings with cd's and dvd's. This is another "purposeful" act of shoddy work. They give you just enough so you'll buy their material. Then a year or five later, they re-re-remaster everything and charge us all over again. They have us by the... and they know it. But, what are Who die-hards to do? I recommend patience for those non-die-hards who are thinking about buying this. This dvd is disjointed and disappointing. And what's going on with The Kids Are Alright dvd??

Summary: Shoot the Editors
Review: I agree with the other reviews condeming the editors of this DVD. Some songs are edited very poorly, and at times the camera effects and audience shots can be extremely distracting.

Despite all this, I am unable to dislike this DVD. Leave it to The Who to transcend a bad film. The music is amazing, they were truly at top form during this concert. I especially reccomend the outstanding performances of 'Water' and 'Young Man Blues'.
As long as you don't expect the film quality of TKAA, you wont be disapointed. It's a way to get the outstanding musical performance while still being able to enjoy John's classic skeleton suit and watch Roger tangle himself in that insane net of fringe.
If you are new to the Who, I reccomend starting with Stein's 'The Kids are Alright', but if you are already familiar with this behemouth of a rock band, this DVD is not to be missed.

Summary: This is History
Review: I have watched this DVD a number of times, and what I like most about it is that allows me to witness a part of Rock and Roll history. The Who concert at Isle of Wight; 600,000 people, 2am, 4 guys and lots of amplifiers. The Who was a mega band, and in this concert they perform on a stage as if they were playing at the high school gym. The band members are all on the same level and close enough to communicate with their eyes.

Also, there were no other musicians on stage. I am always disappointed at live performances with 10+ people on stage. I want to see the band, and only the band, perform.

Lastly, for those people that complain about the sound quality, the editing and the absence of other songs - the glass is half full, so drink up if your thirsty for rock and roll history!

Summary: Mediocre production, invaluable live document of the Who
Review: LIVE AT THE ISLE OF WIGHT is a somehwat shoddy production, largely in the editing department. Many numbers are out of sequence and key songs are missing - what good is a concert touted for its full TOMMY if half the songs are absent and those that are present are out of order? The sound quality suffers at times as well as the audio seems to shift from a sort of stereo to mono and somewhere in between (1.25 surround sound?). Still, I attribute the latter to the equipment available when the concert was filmed and find it relatively easy to overlook when considering this film as a whole.

This is currently the best collection of live footage of the Who available on DVD and it captures the band at their peak. I find the film superior to many concert films as the cameras are pointed directly at the band and waste very little time on the audience. The viewer is treated to many quality shots of Moon's frenzied drumming, Townshend's leaps and windmills, and so on. Not being a Who scholar by any means, I have no idea what kind of live footage exists and what could possibly be released that would be superior (though THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT is one I'm looking forward to). In the meantime, I find this to be perfectly satisfying as I can watch a great band have a great time. Better yet when viewed as a companion to the superior double CD set of the same name which presents the concert in its entirety and proper sequence.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Don't miss this!
Review: Not perfect editing, but definitely The Who at their best. Exciting, raw, wonderful! A must for any rock music fan.

Summary: WHY????
Review: One day I bought "The Who live at Isle Of Wight 1970" in two audio cd, which includes the whole concert. I read in the booklet it was the soundtracks from a movie by Murray Lerner. So since then I was expecting to get it on film. As a Who fan I always long for a Who concert from their golden era 1969-1976. When this concert was released I was beyond excited. Then I was very dissapointed. Why? well, half of the concert is what I expected, The WHO at their best (Heaven & Hell, I can't explain, Water, Young Man blues, etc). Then the performance of Tommy and Oh My God, where is the director of this project??? I will cut him into pieces just like he did in here. I couldn't believe such a thing. If Tommy was not meant to be complete here, well, why including all the wee songs like "Do You Think It's Alright", "There's A Doctor" & "Miracle Cure", and NOT includes "Amazing Journey" ???? My personal fave, but also one of the main songs in the rock-opera, where the story-line is told. Unreal. Songs like "Go to the Mirror" and "Eyesight to the Blind" are edited badly. Tommy ends up being a lot of non-sence wee songs.
There's also the movie "Isle Of Wight Festival" that includes all the artists who took part of that concert, and The Who are performing there "Naked Eye", which is NOT included in this video either.
The Who performance is FIVE, SEVEN, TEN, THIRTY-FOUR stars and more, but I take two stars away 'cos of the director of this project.
