Summary: ShadowOfDeath is a poser
Review: Dont listen to that goober. Most of the bands on this DVD are 10 times more hardcore than Slipknot, and they prove it with their music, not simply thinking they're bad by putting on some silly masks and spewing F*ck every other word. Granted I am a bit of a slipknot fan, but to a point. However anyone who claims to be a metalhead based soley on their opinion of one of the most commercially popular bands in metal, you know hes had his head under a rock. Go rent this DVD again, PoserOfDeath, and actually watch it this time. It might do you some good.

Summary: An excellent festival caught on tape.
Review: I received the New England Metal and Hardcore Festival 2003 DVD. Nothing short of amazing. Though I don't like alll of the bands on it, the ones I do really deliver, and the ones I don't are sure to please those who do. The interviews are great though I wish they were a bit longer, and included in bonus features rather than interspersed between songs, for the flow of the music. I would have liked to see a comentary audio track, such as in the Hellfest 2002 dvd also. The sound quality was really good for everything except for the vocals. On some they were a little too low in the mix. Other than that it's a great live dvd compilation. Some of the highlights for me were: The Haunted, Cannae, Eighteen Visions, Nora, Bleeding Through, Converge, Killswitch Engage, Atreyu, along with bonuses, Himsa, and Blood Has Been Shed. With the release of this, and the Relapse Records Contamintation Festival 2003, and Hellfest dvds, I'm now a junkie for metal festival dvds. It's a great way to check out new bands, and see the bands I'm into in their live setting. Living in Maine there aren't many shows with better bands.

Summary: Hardcore is there, but 0 metal.
Review: I rented this dvd to see if there was anything good on it. Nope. Just a bunch of hardcore wiggers bouncing around. The typical hardcore breakdowns, the idiot signature phil anselmo "YAOW!" and other unmusical elements float in this ocean of idiocy. Opeth, and nevermore are the only two bands on the release i would consider metal. Each did one song. Each song sucked. Overall this release is very boring if you're a metalhead. Go jumpdafukup with slipknot instead. Don't waste your time with this.

Summary: You guys don't know what you're talking about
Review: Ok, despite the occasional really bad bands on this DVD such as...I won't say them in order to avoid offense, but there are some sweet bands such as Shadows Fall(saw them in concert, it was the coolest experience of my life), Killswitch Engage, Lamb of God, Unearth, Opeth, ect. And the interviews after, although the questions are stupid, i enjoyed it very much because you got to see the personalities of the band members, not trying to answer serious questions, but having fun, and if we can't have fun, please let me in on the point of life. All around, good DVD, keep in mind that you don't have to watch the gay bands, but a great purchase for fans of the GOOD metal music.

Summary: hmmm...
Review: right i seriously did not enjoy this dvd at all. this is the 1st metal fest dvd i have ever seen. and will probably be the last. well till hellfest 2003 comes out. but any way, none of the bands played amazing, as there was little crowd participation which makes bands usually play better. just been able to see a life once lost and the lamb of god wall of death (which will be a lot better on hellfest 2003 dvd) were probably best bits on dvd. unless you are some silly little girl who drools all over eighteen visions, or you went to the fest and wana see yourself in the crowd. i would not recomend this dvd at all!!

Summary: Highs and Lows
Review: The highs greatly outnumber the lows. The performances from Shadows Fall, The Haunted, Killswitch Engage, Unearth, Opeth, Lamb of God, Bleeding Through and Lacuna Coil are worth the price of the DVD alone. Skip the Eighteen Visions though...that portion is horrific. Definetely a good variety of bands, and I recommend it.

Summary: Good, not great.
Review: This is the second review I've done for this DVD - I guess the first one was too harsh, it didn't get posted.
Anyway - Let me preface all this by saying I was at this fest and I'm a death/thrash metal kinda guy - so if I say Shai Hulud sucks don't take it personally.
The Good - The footage and sound is good for the Haunted, Killswitch, Shadows Fall, Opeth, Nevermore (ok sound), Lamb of God, and a couple of others. On most tracks the sound fades in and out because the vocalists are running around like maniacs not holding the mic properly, but putting on a good show. This kind of music is notoriously hard to record (and play) live because of the complexity but most bands pulled it off.

The Bad - Overall the video footage is amateurish - as evident by the HEAVY use of filters, effects, and quick cutting. Many of the bands are utter garbage - they could have left out 60% of the trash and given me more Haunted and Opeth etc..... The bonus materials are wretched - sound, video, and band quality. Also, this DVD seems to have many errors in the coding causing freeze frames and trouble navigating the menus. The interviews between songs contain some brainless questions and even more brainless answers. Couldn't someone ask them some well thought out questions on musicianship or their love for metal? Do I really need to know what their favorite curse word is or if they'd pick up a $20 bill laying in dog poop - garbage.
This is a long festival - fans are tired, drunk, and blurry eyed by 7pm usually - just to explain the appearant lack of participation.

It is a very fun festival though and the DVD does a decent job of capturing the spirit. Maybe they'll learn from their mistakes this year and spend some money on a professional film/sound crew and leave out the 2nd and 3rd tier garbage bands.
