Summary: Good Video, worthless audio
Review: Like the guy ^ up there, i've also been a Primus fan since '91, but i am also a bass player so my review will be from that perspective. If what you enjoy about Primus is the funky-azz bass lines and goofy rhythyms, you will be severly disappointed by the 5 audio tracks on this DVD. After listening to them (painfully) several times over the course of the past few days and trying like heck to find some part of it i liked, i am here to say that all 5 tracks are garbage. There is not one even mildly interesting (or semi-difficult) bassline to be found in these 5 tracks. Nor is there any cohesion to the songs, they are as eratic as a manic acid trip, and i don't mean that in the good sense. You can't even tell it's Les playing that bass, Ler's style comes through just enough to let you know it's him and Herb isn't doing anything special. I think Les has wasted waaaay too much time doing his neo-hippie crap with the Frog Brigade and officially fried his brain (and ear) on too many drugs. Les and company should be ashamed to have released these 5 tracks.

The video portion is good and the only redeeming quality of this DVD.

Now you know why Primus bundled these 5 pathetic songs with the video for this DVD, because there is no way in hell they could stand on their own as an official CD release.

Summary: Damn Cool to hear & see them again
Review: Man, I could still dig Brown Album, but I'd stopped my primus fever after the Anti-Pop Fiasco, I kept dreaming of what'd ve been if they kept on the road they jumped out after Tim's departure (Tales From the Punchbowl). And it Happened, Tim's finally back after a long, long while, but it still feels nostalgic to me, with nothing to hope for in the alternative bands world I started looking for other dishes and spices in the field of music, my whole perception has changed, but it's beatufull to hear them again as the original PRIMUS, I hope they keep this thrill going...

Summary: Suck on THIS!!!!
Review: Most music/band-related DVDs are usually kinda' sucky (heh heh), but Primus has released a true masterpiece in "Animals Should Not Try to Act Like People." Chock-full of quality vintage live perfomances and hilariously idiotic backstage & behind the scenes antics and pure Primusian goofballery, this is a DVD not to be missed by anyone who likes Primus, claymation, animation, fishing, or carbonated beverages made from swine. The DVD also includes all of the band's music videos, which again, surpass the average music video in pretty much every way.
I haven't even gotten around to listening to the five new tunes on the CD, but I'm sure they're just swell.
Can't wait to see them at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago (GO CUBBIES!!!) on tour next month. With Tim back behind the kit, it's sure to be a mind-meltingly groovetastic Primus experience.

Fish on.

Summary: Atmosphere, darkness and humour in a 5 track ball of fury!
Review: Ok, so this EP gets slagged off a lot byso-called "classic" fans for not being Frizzle or Cheese-like. I read a certain review in which the reviewer said anybody who thinks this is their best is an idiot. Well, this isn't their best, but it has some of their best songs, so am I an idiot, Mr. Stick-With-Frizzle-Fry-And-Listen-To-Grindcore-LOLZ?

Anyway, now that I have that off my chest, let me say that this is one classy dog that doesn't deserve to be beaten. The shortest track, "Pilcher's Squad" is a hyper speed piece of work which could either please or annoy, depending on what you expect from Primus. The other tracks, stretching between 4 minutes and 8 minutes, are brilliant pieces of dark humoured and atmospheric work. Take "My Friend Fats" for example, one of the best songs Primus have ever done. The song is a wonderfully done piece of work featuring light chugs, heavy riffs and a classy little Les Claypool fingertap bassline. The lyrics tell the story of a fat man who's life involves heavy drug abuse, another example of Primus' dark sense of humour in their music.

Ratings:

The Carpenter And The Dainty Bride: 4/5
Pilcher's Squad: 3.5/5
Mary The Ice Cube : 4/5
The Last Superpower aka Rapscallion: 5/5
My Friend Fats: 5/5

All of the other tracks use this sort of dark, haunting, stadium style effect to create songs that can leave you with chills down your spine. It's good to have Primus back. If another album comes out from them, I hope it uses the same production methods, and with any luck, it'll annoy the living daylights out of the "Frizzle Fry" and "Sailing The Seas Of Cheese" department. Bands change, and to me, Primus have changed for the better. Long live Claypool and Co.

Summary: Excellent packaging and overall product
Review: Okay. I have an XBOX and I play my DVD's on it, like most others do I suppose. I have found that many DVD's menu's are a living hell. It is so darn hard to navagate around and there isn't much sense coorilating the menu's options with simple up and down arrows on a remote.

Not this DVD. the UP arrow takes it up, the down arrow takes it down.. you get the picture. Primus loads just about everything I have ever seen and stuff I have not seen on the DVD. And most of it is just fantastic.. some of the stuff is way old and home movie like, but others are polished and wonderful.

So, the DVD portion of this package is just fantastic.

Now, on to the CD portion of the mix.

Like most Primus releases, when I first hear them, I wonder what the hell is going on. I love that feeling, and if I ever bought a Primus and put it on a stereo and didn't feel totally confused when first listening to it, I would be most dissapointed. This ASNALP is just great for this instant emotion.

The first song, TCATDB is just a flat out wild song, with slappy bass lines and funny sounds. I love the lyrics.. makes for a good storyline.

Second song, by far my favorite. Pilcher's Squad is a hoot. And the song is just rabid. Totally attacking the senses, but yet catchy. that is what I like about Primus/Les Claypool .. he makes the absurd CATCHY. And absurd it is. The bass lines are just nutty fast and silly.

Third song MTIC. I like the spacy pink floydy type of sound. It is a very good song, and should not be viewed anyother way.

fourth song... TLSAKAR is my second favorite. I don't know why, but it has a very odd sound. It isn't anything like they have done before. I am way into it.

Fifth song... very odd song. with an unsettling sound and lyrics about a friend that is fat and apparently likes to take drugs. Music is odd.

Altogether, a great outing. Which is essentially a DVD with an EP connected to it. Good value for sure.

Summary: Love it!
Review: Pretty spiffy DVD & CD. I love watching the "making of" certain videos and their "home movies" and of course, the live footage with upclose shots of Mr. Claypool's fancy fretwork.

Summary: The Best Primus I've ever heard!!
Review: The EP that is. Those three lay it down tight and smooth in these five new songs. They, in combination with the rarites section on the dvd, make this a well-worthy peice of property to treasure. All the songs on the EP are kickin it, except for sgt. pilcher. It'd be alright if it was even two minutes long. It's a joke though, it's funny. You've gotta see the old be-bob jazz version of Tommy the Cat, and the Sgt. Baker recording from 1986, they're off the chain.
All in all, you're gyping the store if you buy this for less than $25, because that's what I'd pay for it, and I'm a frugal, tight-fisted poor boy.
IT seems as though Primus got serious for this EP, of course except Pilcher's squad. The smooth grooves are reminiscest of some kind of Frizzle Fry/Tool combination.
BUY iT!!!!!!!!!!!

Summary: The bastards teach animals to behave(like animals)
Review: The way I see it, is that this is a great deal, with awesome content. And it is all from a group that sucks, and is one of my personal favorites. However this is a dvd/cd set, and both of them are entirely different "animals," so I plan to review them seperately(but in the same review)

CD:4 2/5, stars

Actually, the dvd is the big feature here, and the cd is actually just an added ep. But it is pretty cool just the same. Overall I would say that it reaches toward the darker side of primus(Bob, southbound pachyderm, ect;), except for "Pilcher's Squad, which is a trademark primus goof(goof describes the sound, not the quality of the song). Here it is track-by-track.

The Carpenter, and the dainty bride:5/5; If you have ever heard pork soda, and the bass trick Les uses on "The ol' diamondack sturgeon," which sounds sort of like a sitar. Well, it is used a lot on this song(and on "Mary the Icecube"). The lyrics are a lot like "My name is mud," as far as plot goes(I ran in to this person, he had some pesonal probloms effecting my life, so I killed him). It makes a great opener.

PILCHER'S SQUAD: See above; it is about 2 minutes long(which is good since tracks 1,4,and 5 are all over 6 minuts in length), and is very goofy sounding, but is a good piece of ear candy nonetheless. 5/5 stars

Mary the Icecube: A sad sounding song about a man, who is all depresed after dropping his beloved icecube, which then caused it to smash into pieces. 4/5 stars

The last superpower A.K.A. rapscallion: For me this was the harset to get into. It is actually a lot like "Nature boy(Pork soda)." It starts with a catchy number, which is very enjoyable, and is pretty funky for primus, and then drops off into a three-minute exiremental run before a catchy ending. 5/5 stars

My friend fats: This one is my least favorite song off the cd. It is prettymuch a cheesy-metal-horror-ballad, about a guy who is about to meet his chemical obliviation. 3/5

DVD: 5 stars

I really love this dvd. It contains the videos for "JOHN THE FISHERMAN,""TOO MANY PUPPIES,""JERRY WAS A RACECAR DRIVER,""TOMMY THE CAT,""MY NAME IS MUD,""MR. KRINKLE,""DMV,""WYNONNA'S BIG BROWN BEVER,""SOUTHBOUND PACHYDERM,""SHAKE HANDS WITH BEEF,""OVER THE FALLS,""LAQUERHEAD,"and"THE DEVIL WENT DOWN TO GORGIA," and if they had left it at that, then it would still be more than the price would suggest. But no. You can also get the live performances of"THOSE D@MN-BLUE COLLARED TWEEKERS,""KALAMAZOO,""LAQUERHEAD,""GROUNDHOG'S DAY,""MR. KRINKLE," and there are a ton of bootlegs too(including those with Les, Tod Huth, and Tim Wright). Not to mention all of the other "tidbits, and tadbits," like the "cheesy home video,"and various makings of. All-in-all, this is an excelent package.

PS: the low price rounds it up to an even 5-stars.

Summary: Holy Maly, fullup Lace! Holy Maly, Mothelup Joss!
Review: These five songs are more innovative than the entire contribution of every band that is played and played again and again every 2 minutes and 30 seconds on the radio. The DVD is great simply because it is a Primus DVD, I mean, come on, once you have that you really don't need anything else. and: Hear More Charley Patton!
