Summary: Outstanding performance
Review: There are some people that just don't understand. Steve Perry is no longer singing with them. Isn't the band good enough for them to get a positive review?
The Audio and picture quality is great, and performancewise they play the whole concert flawlessly. Of all the concerts I own, for sure this is the best one. No need to write anymore, two thumbs up!!!

Summary: Journey's Over...
Review: Journey's Over...

It is laughable that the members of Journey would portray the replacement of the irreplacable Steve Perry as just another step in their long, ongoing evolution. Sure, not only did Journey not have a lead singer in their initial incarnation, Mr. Perry wasn't even their first, right? So bring this Augieri fellow on board is just another bold leap into the creative unknown for this group of fearless artists! RIGHT! The fact is that when they recruited Steve Perry, that WAS a pretty bold (if commercial) move for the band which to that time had had moderate success but also had a well established following. And it resulted in a drastic overhaul of the band's sound and an almost total ditching of their repertoire to that point. Well, in 1998 they recruited Steve Augieri for one reason alone: to replicate Steve Perry. There is absolutely nothing creative or bold. Their goal is not to create new sounds, but a desperate bid to recapture their glory days which their former golden-boy can no longer deliver. If I were Perry I'd be suing their buts off, but that's just me. signed, Steve Perry.

Summary: Not good enough
Review: Steve Perry is Journey and Journey is Steve Perry. Anyway you look at it things have not been the same since he left the band. It's easy to get a sound-a-like to take over the lead vocals, it's not easy to have a hit record, or in this case a hit DVD. This DVD is one of the worst that I have ever seen, call me a die hard Steve Perry fan at heart. I look foward to the Journey DVD with Steve Perry.

Summary: Terrific concert footage but no bonus features
Review: The concert itself is outstanding and I love the sound quality. But there were no bonus features, no interviews, no videos, no nothing, so therefore it gets 4 stars instead of 5.

Summary: Classic Journey!!
Review: I have to say that I was a little apprehensive in buying this when I noticed Steve Perry was not providing lead vocals. But much to my surprise and satisfaction, the vocals were handled quite well by vocalist Steve Agueri. The songs are all great and the sound and video quality is excellent. Neal Schon is still an amazing, underrated guitarist and this DVD is a must have for any Journey fan!

Summary: Castronovo and Augieri saves this DVD
Review: I am a Journey fan since 10-15 years ago, so I really looked forward to this DVD. The sound and picture is great, and Steve Perry's replacement mr. Augieri does a fine job, doing all the classic songs justice. The new songs are good, too. The band itself plays ok, but Neal Schons soloing is not as strong as on for instance Captured, he often looses his way and ends up in pointless blurry "too fast for his chops" w**king on his PRS. His guitar used to sound clearer too, it's quite muddy here.
The saving grace is Deen castronovo, who breathes new life into the songs, his drumming is quite sensational, those favouring Steve Smith in other rewievs here must be getting nostalgic, as Deen blows him away, no question about that.
Anyway, well worth the money and a must for all journey fans

Summary: Vocals are different
Review: Steve Augeri cannot (or chooses not to) hold the notes for as long as steve perry can, and that is a major part (trademark) of journey's sound. The rest of this DVD is pure journey.

Summary: Knowing your Steve Perry
Review: I think that anyone who wants to critize the differences between Steve Augeri and Steve Perry should first know more about the differences between Steve Perry and..well...Steve Perry. By this I mean the changes that his voice went through over the years.

The albums Infinity through Escape were his high note clarity years, and between Frontiers and Trial By Fire were his rugged, not-as-high-because-I'm-losing-my-voice-from-the-Infinity through Escape years. If you listen to Escape, then Frontiers, or the Journey Live album, which had recordings from concerts after the release of Frontiers (1983), Steve Perry sounded different on his pre-Frontiers songs. Thats because his voice was changing. It was totally different on Be Good To Yourself, but still you could tell it was Steve Perry.

Due to this rate decline, I seriously doubt that if Steve Perry were still with Journey today, he would sound the same as we all remember him 20 years ago. Now, back to Steve Augeri. Steve Augeri doesn't sound like Steve Perry does right now...but he sounds precisely like Steve Perry did in 1981 and 83. So, if you go to a concert right now with Steve Augeri, you're actually getting a better deal, most likely, than if you saw Steve Perry. (But I would go see Perry in a heartbeat just to see the classic line-up). Augeri just sounds more like classic Journey that Perry probably does right now.

A few words about Deen Castronovo. I think he's a great show drummer...I keep wondering how many more notes he can put in his fills. If you like to see hot, crazy drum rips, he's great. I think Steve Smith was a little more musical though.

Anyway, this Journey DVD kicks ... Go buy the album Arrival. My personal favorites on the album are Higher Place, World Gone Wild, and To Be Alive Again. As a whole, its better than Trial By Fire. I'm a devout fan of Journey's signature sound, with Augeri or Perry.

Summary: Outstanding DVD
Review: ...this DVD is an incredible work of art. The sound and picture quality are outstanding. The group is at their very best in this DVD. Steve Augeri sings all of the songs with heart and soul. Deen Castronovo rips the drums apart and to top it off he sings! Listen to the duet between Deen and Steve on Higher Place. It will blow you away...

Summary: Pleasantly Surprised
Review: I have to agree. Steve Perry is the only Steve Perry in the world; the one I grew up listening to and who's voice I idolized. Steve Augeri is not Steve Perry. His voice is very, very similar. If you didn't know Journey you wouldn't know the difference. Considering the huge shoes to fill, I think Steve Augeri is the only guy in the whole world who can come close. So close it's uncanny.

But you can decide on your own if you want to listen to the new vocalist or not. The review is about the DVD. And this DVD has the clearest and sharpest picture of any in my collection. Not only that, Journey's live sound mix on this DVD is the *best* I've heard from *any* live band on DVD. You can clearly hear every note and see everything that is going on.

You get to see Schon do his solos close up. He is on fire and doesn't miss anything. It sounds just like the CD. The bass and keyboards sound like the CD too. The drums are so close nobody but drummers will know the difference.

As far as the newbies go, the new drummer, Castronovo, obviously knows how to play. His set is tuned perfectly. He plays every song nearly exact. But the real treat is watching and listening to him play La Raza Del Sol. You just need to see it, and if you are a drummer, you're in for an even bigger treat. This is a perfect example of drum perfection - playing with energy, explosiveness, and creativity, all in time and with purpose. Listen to those drum fills and listen to the drum note quality.

The other newbie of course is very talented. I don't know if young, new Journey listeners would ever know the difference. I think Augeri looks a little too serious and perhaps ... unsure. He sings the notes well but doesn't have the range or clarity that Perry did. Again however, it sounds so similar though.

If you want a DVD you can watch over and over, has superb sound and video and editing, and makes you want to play your instrument or sing, this is it. Skip to La Raza Del Sol and listen to the guitar vs. keyboard battle. That song illustrates which era of musicians created the best music, and in my opinion, in which era were the most talented musicians found.

I love this DVD but still listen to the original album Journey songs and probably won't buy new Journey CDs.
