Rating: Summary: Great Videos MONO SOUNDTRACK Review: I was pretty disappointed with the DVD's sound. I have not a problem if the band decided to release the videos in mono, but somebody along the way forgot to inform the customers about this decision, and the disc itself has printed "LPCM Stereo" on it. That is the ONLY problem I have with the soundtrack.I don't ask for 5.1 sound, simply because 90% of music DVD's with 5.1 are "faux", in other words, echo and reverb added on the surrounds, which results in horrible sound imaging. Much better off with PCM Stereo and using your amplifier's Dolby Prologic II if you can. Why am I disappointed? Well, I don't recall if the videos were in stereo when I watched them on TV, but if they were, which I highly think the case, then a mono soundtrack doesn't hold true to the original video as it was conceived. Anyway, still a collection of great videos from some amazing directors like Gondry and Sednaoui. Recommended
Rating: Summary: Excellent but not even Stereo? Review: I will keep this simple. If you are a massive attack fan or just love complicated and enigmatic videos that require some thought and open mindedness then buy this DVD. If you are a huge fan of sound quality, I suggest you go elsewhere. I think Massive Attack sold out on us on that part. For such a great group of true artists that obviously thrive on quality music, they sold the thing in mono. I read another review that says it is in PCM Stereo. That must be the US version because the UK version is in mono. I checked it against other copies to be sure. So go for it if you want to have some arty videos to decipher but steer clear if you are after quality sound.
Rating: Summary: this is a GREAT video collection Review: I'm not sure where the other reviewers are coming from. But if you love Massive Attack - and their most popular singles - AND you are interested in music video, this is a great collection.. For fans, assuredly. For almost everyone else too. Great selection of tunes. And the art direction on the videos is very strong. Check out the apartment house on "Protection". Or the paranoiac domestic setting on "Risingson". Are the bizarre chase scene in "Angel". And the mighty "Safe from Harm" and "Unfinished Sympathy" get great treatment. If you are interested, and wondering - just get it. Good stuff.
Rating: Summary: Massive flashbacks... Review: In 1991 I was fortunate to be a vocalist for a band and we opened for Massive Attack during their first US tour supporting Blue Lines. They didn't bring Shara Nelson and their stage show wasn't quite worked out yet but they had 3 videos on VHS that they were handing out. The VHS has been long lost so to get this DVD is a flash from the past for me. But some of their later videos (circa 1998) I couldn't quite get into as much. Too much focus on 3-D in the camera. But still it is cool to have this DVD and travel down memory lane.....
Rating: Summary: Creative Visuals Review: It's clear from this collection of videos that MA have always put as much effort into their visual product as they put into their studio recordings. From the urban sprawl of "Safe From Harm" and "Unfinished Sympathy" to the deeply moving womb movie that is "Teardrop" and the film noir of "Inertia Creeps", MA consistently marry their unique sound with spellbinding visuals. My favorites are: "Teardrop": The song and video that made me an MA fan, and my all-time favorite music video. "Inertia Creeps": Their last video as a trio, is also one of their best. There's enough of a narrative here to suggest something sinister, but you're never quite sure what's happened, which is why you keep coming back for more. "Safe From Harm": I love the camera work in this video, but most of all, I love how the song's sense of dread and paranoia is so vividly brought to life. "Angel": The chase: simple, beautifully shot, and powerful. "Protection": Just so languid and beautiful. Michel Gondry is my favorite video director, and he definitely does not disappoint here. An excellent way to revel in the greatness that is Massive.
Rating: Summary: Artistic Review: Its interesting placing a face to a band. In some ways it can ruin the mystery of who these folks are. These videos arnt that instance. What a wild collection or artistic expressions. My favorite is 'Angel'. I didnt however feel many of the videos matched the songs themselves but that is me seeing the music through my own eyes.
Rating: Summary: Unfinished Sympathy Review: Maybe the best song of last century, this is your first real chance to have the original music video for this masterpiece: "Unfinished Sympathy", brilliantly singed by Shara Nelson. You want extra features? Visit their website, choose and download the pdf artwork and customize your dvd box. Pretty cool. And check their new single online too. It's great.
Rating: Summary: Just 11 Promos... Review: Nothing less nothing more... which to some may be quite dissapointing. Its still a great collection considering that just about 4 of the videos make the package worth it. But do not expect to be blown away if youve never watched them all, or if youre not a fan. All in all, its a nice dvd, with 11 videos... more than enough for the true massive attack fan...
Rating: Summary: Trip-Hop-Pop at it's Surrealistic BEST!!!! Review: This Dvd is FANTastic!!!,These 11 Songs have the Darkest most meaningfull Video footage i have ever seen.If you are searching for a Band that has Substance and a Story to tell that is so Deep that you think about the Songs story lines for hours afteryou have Watched them, You need go no Further..... This Manical Preoccupation with them being in Stereo or DVD 5.1 stereo etc. is Absolutely Krazy!! and Meaningless. i mean does a person wonder if they get a Priceless video of their favorite band playing live in STEREO?? or Mono?? Of course it is the Band that really Matters here,i hope this is a Basic truth with Most reading this! The videos are in Mono but i feel this was the Bands Descision so viewers would FOCUS on the Films. They are Unbelievable!!!! They use a Mixture of Stephen King type Images, like the 2 girls from "The Shining" movie to disturbing Dreamlike images of people chasing this Man at night with surprises up the YINYANG!!! If you Like Dark Surreal Videos of a band (that i am sad to not have NOT known of sooner), then you are in the RIGHT PLace. if you are seeking Techno Techniques like 5.1 dvd's then go and seek out the remastered HooHA that is Polluting MTV and Other stations. lastly i find it interesting that British and Australian folks are disturbed about this DVD not being in Stereo! or 5.1 When the Group TRAFFIC(Stevie Winwood's 1st Band) "Mr. Fantasy" album premiered in 1969, it was in mono not stereo, same with the Beatles and plenty of other groups popular in England at that time. These albums were painstakingly Mixed by the Groups and they're respective Producers in "STEREO", so why the mono versions?? i never figured that out .With the Visuals in this "MASSSIVE ATTACK" DVD you will not care as long as you are Focusing on what the Band and Video producers were intending in the 1st Place,,, ""The Stories of these Most Intrigiuging Films"". The IFC station should take this and run with IT!!Certainly the TRIO Station Has. GO FOR IT !!!!!
Rating: Summary: My Mind is Upside Down! Review: This is a nearly perfect music-DVD. The videos (the good ones) are top notch. They will continue to bring you back for more viewings. There are, however, very dissapointing things on this DVD. The actual DVD menu is absolutely sparse and pretty bad. And the first four or five videos you can forget about - one of which is pretty much soft-core porn (seems bizarre and stupid). Disregarding those minor draw-backs the remaining videos shine! If it were not for the bad things mentioned above this would easily be five stars. Some videos are genious - they are simply works of art created around songs that are works of art unto themselves. This DVD is no question worth the price - i could watch the videos of Angel, Teardrop, Inertia Creeps, or Karmacoma at least ten more times. I can also imagine this as a backdrop for a chill-out time with your friends THOUGHT PROVOKING, INTERESTING, TWISTED, BUT SOMETIMES UTTERLY STUPID. (sorry if i'm being too harsh)
