Rating: Summary: Thank God for this colection Review: As a music video lover I can honestly say these videos are amazing. Siva: It was Ok Rhinoceros: Again more indie video, nothing amazing. Cherub Rock: The song is awesome, the video looks as if the High school A/V club filmed it. Today: The best siamese dream video, when I watch it, it reminds me of when I was in middle school, kidding around with friends. Disarm: Moving song, musically simple but lyrically (Which the Pumpkins are probably in the top 5 in Rock) they show more depth than garage band hype. Rocket: I like the band preformance better than the kids building the rocket ship, I could have lived without "Spanky and the little rascals buliding an interstellar vehicle!" Bullet with Butterfly wings: Dirty mud people, rock on!!! 1979: I love the video, I love the song but being born in 1979, I feel I'm a little biased. The anecdotes about the original version of the video were just hilarious. My favorite song from twilight to starlight, the whole double disk favorite is Muzzle. ZERO: Those actors sold it for me, they were in character and eerie. Tonight, Tonight: The song was POP ROCK (the acoustic reprise in the box set is awesome)The Video still a ground breaker. Thirty three: I love Thirty-three, visually they were stunning. Thirty three is simple in concept, the directors eye for scenery is stunning. I cannot use the word stunning enough, it was beautiful. I think of a very special person when I see that video. Ava Adore: The video ruled on so many levels. The set was well thought out. The costumes had style, the direction was dark (Dom&Nic directer NIN'S perfect drug)On tv they blocked the 70's porn meets ancient greece which really upset me. It wasn't that bad. Perfect: My favorite song off of adore, it was good to see most of the 1979 cast come back to be in the video. The Everlasting Gaze: The song is awesome, when I hear the song it carrys the name of the album (Machina: The machines of God), it makes me feel and imagine the engines of hell feeding the great machine, the dark rusting industrial vison of Corgan made this song. Stand inside your love: This video was voted as being one of the worst ever by MTV viewers, these are of course the same viewers who listen to Staind and Limp Bizkit, enough said. It was a hard video to watch, it is weird and that Oscar Wilde quote threw some people off for sure, they probaly said "That dude from Willy Wonka's deep man". Kids today have about as much depth as a barbie pool. Try, Try, Try: This video is crazy, I love it. The whole whoring for heroin while pregnant thing bugs me alot but it's honest, I've seen it and lived through things like that, maybe that's why it bugs me? The only thing about the video that is iritating is the view of the "american family" I am tired of seeing British, or european directors showing us "American life", is that what they really see us like? That was about as American as the Ming dynasty, We are not that bad, Europeans were the ones who started nasty things like the crusades, colonialism, and of course Ab-Fab. The live shows are ok, nothing to write home about. The documentry and even the format is by far better than most Collections today. Buy this DVD, MTV will not show anything worth while, you can stand Lil' Bow Wow and Creed for only so long, so why torture yourself buy this DVD.
Rating: Summary: A Must for Fans and Filmmakers Review: Here it is on one dvd, a reminder of why the Smashing Pumpkins were so fun to listen to during the 1990's and why they became so tiresome in the 00's. What makes this dvd collection special is the behind the scenes commentary and documentary footage. An annoying mystery does remain....the editing on the documentary footage for the song "33" and "Tonight Tonight" was so seamless and special, it makes you wonder why this obviously talented filmmaker wasn't used throughout the collection. He or she deserves a big wet kiss from Billy Corgan. Other highlights include the never before released video "Untitled", as well as the general packaging and dvd interface. An artful job in general. Now if this same crew could save the rest of the music industry's mediocre dvd releases, we'd all be better off for it.
Rating: Summary: Quality of SP videos makes owning them a must! Review: I would recommend this DVD to any fan of Pumpkin music and/or videos. As for some reviewers who say that this DVD will just collect dust on your shelf, I completely disagree--the love and enjoyment of listening to their beautifully poetic lyrics can only be hightened by watching their videos, which are trully artistic masterpieces. Not to mention that it is refreshing to watch videos (however old they are) that meant something, that commuticate to the viewer something of significance, rather than the videos today that cost an obscene amount of $$ and are completely superficial. I admit the Smashing Pumpkins made some expensive videos, but it resulted in videos that are awe-inspiring works of art, not full of $200,000 cars and platinum jewelry. The bottom line is, you cannot find music or videos of such high quality and significance today. Their fantastic videos are only hightened by the commentaries--knowing the concepts behind these videos makes you appreciate them even more. For example, every scene in "Thirty-Three" refects the line of the song that is playing, and the kids in "1979" are also in "Perfect." Their "Gish", "Siamese Dream" and "Mellon Collie" videos totally had me reminiscing--I felt like I was in junior high and high school again! And their "Adore" and "Machina" videos, which I had never seen b/c I stopped watching MTV by that time, are just amazing. The "Stand Inside Your Love" video is so beautiful I have been watching it over and over! The short film is very cool also. In its entirity, this DVD shows the growth and stages of one of the greatest bands, and comes full circle with their last song "Untitled" (which is a little tricky to find, but you have to jump to Chapter 20 on your DVD player). Basically, if you are a fan, do not second guess buying this DVD--you will not regret it.
Rating: Summary: the genius is overwhelming Review: DVD video retrospectives should all be this genius. besides the ability for EVERY video to toggle the audio commentary or video outtakes on and off, you have hidden surprises as well. the menus are annoying as they are broken down by album, however you do have the option to watch it all in one piece from the first menu. by using the audio track or angle features on your DVD you can watch it straight through with the outtakes or commentary or any combination you like. the "untitled" video IS there - on the initial menu there is a small square on the lower left corner. you can hit the arrow until it is highlighted - then you will be greeted with a lot of footage from the "untitled" recording session set to the song. there should be no complaints about this DVD - other than the omission of "end/beginning" - but as has been stated before, virgin doesn't own the song so it couldn't be used here. but that is a minor complaint in a DVD so packed with extras and goodies. worth much more than what you pay for it.
Rating: Summary: What's with the video camera icon? Review: I have tried to get through this video compilation, as it contains some of my favorite videos of all-time, but it is so distracting to me that the camera icon stays on the screen throughout the entire length of the DVD!!! We know we're watching a video, thank you, and we don't need to be reminded of it...It's especially distracting on the Disarm video, with its sweeping black-and-white camera work. Who's idea was this, anyway?!? I have tried in vain to remove it from the screen - can anyone help me with this?!? I would give this 5 stars without this annoying "feature", especially for the behind the scenes footage, but I can't get past the icon. Buy at your own risk, or check out the VHS, which is what I intend to do...
Rating: Summary: A Smashing DVD... Review: This DVD is a great tribute to one of the greatest rock bands of our time - one that always stayed true to itself, never sold out, and made some truly amazing, heartfelt, original rock music. The DVD follows the progression of the band from the epic psychedelic rock of the early days, to the electronica-experimentation of the Jimmy-less 'Adore' era, and comes full circle with the return-to-fuzz 'Machina'. The Pumpkins have made a wide variety of great videos during their career, almost always complementing the music and not detracting from it - my personal favourites being the hilarious 'Rocket', and the simple spacey technicolour of 'Cherub Rock'. In addition, you get some very interesting, informative and amusing commentary and behind-the-scenes footage detailing the making of each video, plus excellent live renditions of 'An Ode to No-one', and 'Geek USA', and a sneakily hidden video for the Pumpkins' final single, 'Untitled'. A great release that will appeal to both hardcore fans, and those lucky enough to be discovering the Pumpkins for the first time. BTW, (...) the fact that 'The End is the Beginning is the End' isn't on the DVD - the Pumpkins are on the Virgin label. 'The End...' on the other hand, was from the Batman4 soundtrack, and therefore the rights to the song belong to Warner Bros. That's the only reason it's not on the DVD. It's a shame, but that's just how it goes.
Rating: Summary: I found 2 errors, but no "glitches" Review: If you pay close attention while listening to "The Everlasting Gaze" you'll notice the song doesn't skip during those so-called computer-looking-glitches. Those were done on purpose with behind the scenes footage. Pause it and see. So that's, NOT AN ERROR. But, on the track list it says #20 is Try - A Short Film and #21 is Untitled when it's actually the other way around. On my DVD player I can only see the Untitled video by entering the #20 with my remote. If I try to skip to #20 it goes from #19 to #21. That's the first error. The second error is that the Untitled track is not listed, or shall I say, UNTITLED, while in the menu mode of the DVD for it to be selected. If they did this on purpose, fine. But it's just too bad if I were to play this DVD during a party and not be able to see the Untitled video unless I entered #20 through my remote. It's still gets 5 stars even though it's also missing "The End is the Beginning is the End" video. Unless, it too, is Untitled?
Rating: Summary: Should've stayed away Review: For me the Pumpkins have always been about the music ... and I loved it (up to and including Adore anyway). So why release a video collection on DVD that has the most god-awful sound mix I have ever heard. Some of the track's video is also quite grainy. I guess if you're an MTV video-holic and a Pumpkin's "fan" this video is for you. But if you love the music, avoid this dvd and just go listen to one of the best bands of the 90's.
Rating: Summary: there is no glitch! Review: there is no glitch on the everlasting gaze video. jason lindsay said that it switched between the backstage footage and the video, but that is done on purpose.
Rating: Summary: Pumpkins Are Breath-Taking Review: after reading mr dan rice's review i laughed. he doesnt own the dvd and thinks he is qualified to make a good decision on this dvd but alas he doesnt and also doesnt know what he is talking about. The dvd is stellar. all the pumpkins videos (even a hidden video of Untitled) except for "The End is the Beginning is the End." this video was excluded because it was a video for a soundtrack and Warner Bros. and they own the rights to the song and video, Not Virgin Records. alas, despite this video's absence, the documentary and behind-the-scenes clips are excellent. if you are a pumpkins fan you need this DVD or else you are missing out in a big way.
