Description:
Staying relevant in the eye-candy Britney and 'N Sync era, Janet Jackson puts her dancers, costume changers, and set designers through their paces in a two-hour visual (and occasionally aural) spectacular from Hawaii on the final night of her 2001 All for You tour. For 26 songs, Janet changes flashy outfits seemingly a dozen times; backstage cameras show assistants helping the star out of one costume and into another, although the discreetness (no nudity here!) suggests it's either been pretaped or "rehearsed" at earlier shows. Still, this unique behind-the-scenes glimpse is something her rivals wouldn't show--Janet has raised the bar. With unflagging energy--and the help of prerecorded backing tapes--Janet sates her audience with her impressive array of hits, from "What Have You Done for Me Lately" and "Nasty" to "Trust a Try" and "Together Again." There's no doubt Janet's performing instincts have been co-opted by a generation of up-and-comers, but Live in Hawaii shows Janet's not about to abdicate her throne. --Kevin Filipski
