Rating: Summary: ULTIMATE BOWIE DVD Review: i got this dvd from amazon(.com) about a week ago and i am very suprised. it covered it all! every single good video and some tv appearances throughtout his career. any bowie fan needs to get this. well , the sound quality and picture was excellent, no complaints. i am very happy with this double disk set of bowie's career and videos and definetly get this if your a bowie fan! i mean it shows bowie from when he basically first got popular around 1972 with ziggy stardust and works its way all the way through the years till present time. it was fun to watch how his image changed as the years went on and how he evolved musically. essential for any bowie fan.
Rating: Summary: Changes..... Review: I grew up hearing David Bowie everywhere, from the roller rink to the radio, and my older sister's albums ( many thanks, BB! ). But I never became a real FAN until after Let's Dance made him a major POPSTAR in America. And admittedly only recently have I begun to delve deeper into his back catalogue, discovering one gem after another, in albums such as LOW, HEROES and STATION TO STATION ( my personal favorite ). His early 70's material really never interested me before , mainly because of it's more "basic" rock n roll instrumentation of bass, drums, voice and guitar. But I must admit I have been watching disc one of this DVD obsessively and seeing Bowie's ever changing persona in glorious living color is something of a revelation. My favorites from disc one include the GORGEOUS Mick Rock-directed clip for Life on Mars, the group of Old Grey Whistle Test performances that begin the DVD, and the live performance of Young Americans from a US talk show ( check out Luther Vandross doing that cool forward-backward step thingy while he sings backing vocals YEAH !! ). I also think that while the videos for several of the Let's Dance singles are visually a bit dated, the songs themselves still hold up very well. Let's Dance itself is STILL a stunning pop single, with a great bass line and awesome drum track. ( Bowie had a knack for making really great pop songs while never seeming to "sell out" .) Disc two doesn't hold as much a fascination for me. He flirts with so many different styles, as he did in his earlier days, but it sometimes seems forced, like he's following trends instead of creating them. And quite frankly the few Tin Machine songs included here are dreadful. The lack of really great promo videos on disc two is the only reason I dock this DVD a point. Otherwise, it is a treat for fans.
Rating: Summary: Ahhh Easter Eggs! Review: I loved this DVD. It has a lot of great David Bowie Videos and was worth the somewhat expensive price! However... the Easter Eggs are driving me INSANE!!! I have no idea how to find them and think that a place labeled "extras" containing these hidden clips would have been better. Could someone PLAESE write on how to find them, and where they are-- it would be much appreciated by a fan that just wants to see more Bowie and can't! Thanks!
Rating: Summary: I love music videos. Review: I really enjoy my copy of Best of Bowie. I haven't found any Easter eggs yet... but one day the version of Oh You Pretty Things changed. The one I had gotten used to had David messing up on the words and looking kinda disgusted with himself at the end. I like the version it's on now. I love the way he's so dynamic while singing (especially when an audience is present, like in Starman). The best stuff is definately on the first part of the first disc (the glam-rock days), but some of the later second disc is cool, too. Over all, it's good for hearing the music, seeing Bowie, seeing his costumes, and the crazy, weird things that come along with David Bowie.
Rating: Summary: Sound Quality Poor Review: I was quite disappointed in the sound quality of this DVD set. The DVD is not even in dolby digital and sounds flat. Some tracks are not even in stereo. EMI, you blew it man. The sex pistols were right. If I did not receive this as a gift I would have gotten my money back.
Rating: Summary: Bowie blows my mind Review: I'm sort of an emerging Bowie fan... I've only just begun to compile a collection...
I found this DVD set at the video store and rented it on a whim, and all I can say is...
Wow.
Maybe it doesn't contain the best of the best, but the videos presented in this set are pretty amazing, from the earlier years (Rebel, Rebel and Drive-in Saturday) to the middle (Dancing in the Street with Mick Jagger, Time Will Crawl, and Fame) to the latest (Thursdays Child, Survive)... my mind was blown.
This man is one of the most singular charismatic people in existance. His constant reinventions of himself and his music continue to thrill me with each turn.
My favorites (and I'm weird, so don't get uppity... I know they're not the most popular) are "Time Will Crawl" and the easter egg live version of "Survive".
Rating: Summary: Oh, You Pretty Thing! Review: I've been a fan of Bowie for a long time. His music and personality inspires me, beyond what I could possibly write here. In this Dvd, you get to experience his music, videos, and history. You see Bowie's career develop, change, and strengthen. I'm a huge Ziggy fan, so I was pleased to see (over and over in my player, these days) all those old Ziggy videos. Yet, I also love Bowie's newer, and even the obscure, material, also included in this collection. If you like Bowie, then get this Dvd, because you will surely like seeing all the videos, each one cooler, funkier, and prettier than the last. The easter eggs, in my opinion, aren't the best you could wish for, but that's alright. The Dvd is more than fine. I recommend it!
Rating: Summary: A Well-Rounded Collection of Bowie's Career Review: Just about every video you could possibly think of, from Heroes and Oh! You Pretty things to Thursday's Child and Heart's Filthy Lesson - they're all here.
This collection, consisting of two DVDs, very adequately showcases Bowie's magnificent transformations from folky to glam star to 80s pop icon to the weird, twisted worlds of his mid-90s video endeavors.
His music, as always, is nearly flawless, and paired with his famous love of stunning visuals, this collection never fails to impress.
If you are a long-time Bowie fan, or even a new fan, this collection greatly heightens one's appreciation of the man behind so many faces and personalities. For, of course, Bowie has always been about visuals as well as his music, and his videos really show his genius use of visuals to portray the messages in his songs. A magnificent, must-own video collection for any fan.
Rating: Summary: not bad but not worth it Review: Normally i'd be all aglow about this item, but they edited the videos, aparently to make them safe of children or some other reason, i don't know why. I wish I knew, man what a waste of money. perhaps I'm just a Bowie purist. I want my (money) back but only if it comes with an apology from Bowie himself.
