Rating: Summary: I wish I could give it 5 stars, but... Review: If only this had been a beginning-to end-record of a complete Bruce Springsteen concert, it would have been perfect. There is a show's worth of material, over three hours, but it's broken up and out of its normal order. The first disc contains the complete HBO special from last year, along with special that features Bob Costas interviewing Bruce and the band. The second disc contains 11 songs not included in the original special. These are all the bonus tracks from the CD plus several more. The first disc is great of course, and there's nothing wrong with the performances, but the material on the second disc is even better, with performances of "Backstreets," "Darkness on the Edge of Town," "Born in the U.S.A.", "Jungleland," "Light of Day," "Thunder Road" and "Ramrod." I have a feeling that long time Springsteen fans will find themselves returning to the second disc more than the first. This package contains some typically brilliant Springsteen performances, but I wish it had been organized into a more cohesive whole.
Rating: Summary: awesome, awesome, awesome! Review: I have collected just about everything possible of Springsteen's over the years. My biggest regret is that I never got to see him LIVE. This DVD brings me "almost" that experience. There are a few tracks omitted I would have wished for, but overall, it is a great summation of the Boss's "stuff". Hard to believe at his age he still puts out the vibes and energy of his youth - yet his music has evolved over all these years and he just gets better and better. I rented this first at my video store, and after watching it, I knew I HAD to have it for myself to play again and again. It is THE best!
Rating: Summary: This is why you own a DVD player Review: When this concert was on HBO, we had a Tri-State area reunion party for neighbors in South Carolina. This DVD has more cuts than the original HBO special. FANtastic. I wish I had been in MSG for one of those shows! Having seen Bruce several times live, I guess I will have to settle for this, but it is a great collection and a must have for any Springsteen fan. The audio video quality is why I went DVD. This one sees more play time than any other DVD I own. You don't have to be from NJ to love this one. IT ROCKS.
Rating: Summary: The best Bruce Juice, the best video quality Review: I had the pleasure of attending this concert, and jumped at the opportunity to own it for all time on DVD. The set list encompasses some of the best live Bruce you'll ever hear, but the most understated part of this DVD is the video quality. HBO gets top marks for having incredibly high production standards, and they set an incredibly high standard with this DVD. Home theater buffs should note that this DVD is reference quality, and works well as a showpiece DVD.
Rating: Summary: The Boss rocks the big one and lives up to his name ..... Review: Just got this DVD and for the life of me don't really know why I hand't bought it when it first came out .... OK OK maybe I listened too much to some nit pickety comments about sequencing, questions about the 5.1 dolby and even things missing from some of the shows .... that was dumb of me, cause I want to tell you, this DVD is super and will rock your socks .... To begin with the DVD contains 25 song tracks and lasts over 3 hours .. yup you heard me, 3 hours which I might add is more than double most concert DVD's today ... Talk about bang for your buck, I just bought a few Latin Jazz concert VHS and got 29 minutes at 17.00 .... WOW On the technical side, the camera work is stupendous and seems to follow your eyes as to what you would have been watching if you were at the concert, the editing is great, video clear and crisp and the sound, may not be studio quality, but for a concert it's fabulous. Of the few fabled rockers that cut concert DVD's like the Stones and Fleetwood Mack this is a must have addition to the party collection .....
Rating: Summary: The boss is the Boss and the Boss is Springsteen Review: I have never had the opportunity of seeing Springsteen & E Street Band directly on stage. So, when I saw "Live in New York City" I was impressed a lot. It was a wonderful experience to see Nils Lofgren playing the guitar on "Youngstown", Little Steven singing on "Two Hearts", Clarence Clemons playing the sax on "The River" and "Jungleland", Roy Bittan playin the piano on "Jungleland", Patti Scialfa singing "Romble Doll" and "Mansion on the Hill", Danny Federicci playing the acordeon on "Mansion on the Hill", Gary Tallent and Max Weinberg giving the power in every song, all they are a super rock and roll band, but Springsteen on "Tenth Avenue..", "41 Shots", "The Promise" and "Ligth of Day" simply shock me... I only have a doubt: When will Bruce & Co. come to México???
Rating: Summary: Heard, but never seen The Boss before? This one's for you! Review: The first time I saw Springsteen, I was no fan. I was invited to a concert by a lady friend whose judgment I respected and who had the connections to nab two good tickets at the LA Coliseum. We arrived late, and as we walked toward the stadium, I was disappointed by the sound I heard in the open night air, and not knowing his shows were entirely solo, told her "I hope that's the warm up band." She just smiled sweetly and said, "we'll see." When we got inside and seated we were close enough to see clearly the body language of each of the performers but far enough away to rely upon the screens for close ups. As we were locating our seats, this subtle transformation began to occur. As if by magic, I found myself being drawn into the magnetism of the performance. Here, there was no sense of someone acting on stage, just someone expressing in sound who he was and his perceptions of the world about him from the bottom of his gut and revealing his heart like an open book in searing lyrics. This he managed to convey without an ounce of idiosyncratic sentimentality but instead through finding in the particulars of his lyrics, a universal dimension of the human experience conveyed at once in word and through the timbre in his voice. When this man who I would learn in the course of this evening to call The Boss, played his music, it was abundantly clear that he and the band felt this music in their bones, and that feeling penetrated each expression of the Boss' face and his entire body language, and the depth of this feeling simply became contagious, catching the entire coliseum on fire. By something over the halfway mark, we could no longer confine our enjoyment to our seats. We got up and skipped to the edge of the crowd where we found enough open space to dance our way through the rest of the concert. To appreciate a Springsteen concert, requires then as now, all five senses in play. And you'll benefit if you bring your sixth sense to bear as well. This DVD is the closest thing to being there that is commercially available today. It's imperfect just like the rest of life. But at least until they release a DVD concert composite of Springsteen, 1975-2000, you'll never witness a better rock concert on DVD and this one on DVD beats out most you'll ever see live. This DVD is not recommended for the optional list. This is a no-brainer slam dunk. This one won't sit gathering dust on your library shelf. Anyone with a heart and soul will be drawn magically, to pull this one out and play it again and again and again...
Rating: Summary: This is the music of America - this is Rock & Roll ! Review: With the words of the Boss: Yes this is Bruce Springsteen and the heart stopping, earth shocking, earth quaking, heart breaking, entertainment business shaking, history making, legendary E Street Band. Bruce, give us more, more of your music. Please !
Rating: Summary: From The King To The Boss Review: Elvis will always be the King, but this concert video is proof positive that Bruce Springsteen, in his fifties, is still the BOSS! He sings and plays guitar with the intensity and energy of a man half his age. The E-Street band members are supremely talented musicians who sound great. The songs are finely crafted narratives, filled with colorful characters. The biggest surprise occurs when Bruce plays piano on the song "The Promise." The biggest disappointment is seeing a snippet of the song "Blood Brothers" during the interview segment, but not having a complete performance of that song included elsewhere. However, that's a minor complaint considering how great this concert DVD is.
Rating: Summary: Bruce did himself no favours ... Review: This music DVD has very average video quality, and below average audio. Bruce Springsteen did not do a very good job of producing and performing on this video.
