Rating: Summary: The sound of 20,000 people shouting "Brooooooooooooce" Review: Any Springsteen fan knows the catcall, and hopefully, everyone will have the chance to do it at least once in their life. I had the pleasure of doing so at the Toronto show in May of 2000. This DVD captures the mood, the excitment, and the pure showmanship of Springsteen and his fantastic E Street band. The footage was taken from the last two shows of the 2000 tour at Madison Square Garden, and it contains a total of 25 songs spanning 2 DVDs. The usual hits are there: Badlands, Out in the Street, Two Hearts, Murder Incorporated, the list goes on and on. The musical highlights are, without question, an acoustic version of "Born in the USA", and the brand new song "American Skin (41 Shots)", which is a beautiful and soulful ballad. But the greatest sequences are between songs. Springsteen's famous "Preacher mode" during "Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out" is inspired, while his interaction with the rest of the band is priceless. Springsteen, despite pushing 50, it an energetic and spirited performer, and I don't believe I have seen anyone sweat as much as he does in this concert. The DVD set also contains a 15 minute documentary "New York Serenade", which has interviews with the entire band, on how their tour is going, what started it, ect. A rare insight from Bruce and the band. Having said all the praise, the DVD is somewhat lacking in features. It would be nice to have different camera angles, like a lot of concert DVDs have. Also, more extras. The 15 documentary can best be described as a teaser, and leave you wanting more. But to judge the DVD solely on what it is, it is a fantastic conert, and one you will want to re-visit often.
Rating: Summary: Its like being there all over again! Review: The DVD makes you feel like you're there again...and for me that's very special. Having been upgraded to the front, I can actually be seen in the video, waving my yellow sign which reads "thanks Bruuuuuce!"...the sound quality is amazing, and if you have a large screen TV, its truly like re-living the performance. If you are a Bruce fan, and haven't added this title to your collection, you've gotta order this DVD.
Rating: Summary: Mr Chris Review: What a great DVD for any Bruce fan! The clarity and quality of sound puts you right at the concert . You would swear you could reach out and touch Bruce and the "E" Streeters .The picture is that crisp and detailed . Can't wait to watch it over and over!
Rating: Summary: This is why I have a home theater Review: If you aren't amazed by the sound quality of this DVD you must have a problem with your sound system. I saw this show a couple of weeks before the New York show in Boston's Fleet Center. Briefly, the sound is much better on this DVD than the actual live show and I had excellant seats! My wife goes, "So, the sound is better at home, we can see the performers better and I don't have to worry about a babysitter. Why do we go out anymore?" This is an electrifying show! A "must have" for your collection!
Rating: Summary: DESERVES CINEMATIC RELEASE!!!! [Wish i could rate it higher] Review: My soul has been moved...Initially i got into The Boss as a joke. He is sadly institutionalized into the school of the classicly abused rock n roll icons, and by that i mean that for the uninitiated [or ignorant] his Born in the USA stereotype will be hard to shake. In fact i believed that he was the embodiment of the pathetic 80's values and arrogant patriotism. With that said, the reunification of the Boss and the ministry of Rock 'n' Roll [the E-Street Band] have pulled off another timeless concert movie. Whether it be Little Steven's Nixon impersonation, "Big Red's" overture, the do-see-do of Clarence Clemons and Nils Lofgren [Clemons looking remarkedly similar to Ghost Dog], the Boss' raving lunacy on Tenth Ave Freeze Out, or the um..."fashion" of Max Weinberg. "Bruce Springsteen & the E-Street Band: Live in NY" marks as truly one of the great performances from truly one of the greatest musicians...every single song shatters its past connections and seemingly becomes a gospel number, sung [completely unpretentiously] by both the Madison Square Garden's audience and the E-Street Band. It's more relatable than Dylan, more personal than the other 99.9% and far, far more giving than most. i cry...you will too.
Rating: Summary: Now You Can See What The CD Was Missing Review: When I reviewed the "Live in New York City" CD, I ended by suggesting it might be a good idea to wait for the DVD. I was right. Everything about the CD pointed to a rushed release; poor song sequencing, mediocre sound, questionable song selection and inexcusable packaging. With the lack of crowd noise coming through the mix, it lost the excitement we all associate with Bruce's concerts. As I had hoped, the DVD brings this excitement back. While we all might have preferred a slightly different song list, overall the selection works well. The sequencing, which bothered many reviewers on the CD, seems to work better here -- obviously aided by the video. While I would have preferred a few more "extras" -- more interview time with the band, backstage shots, etc. -- the NYC Serenade segment is okay. Technically, the DVD is very well produced. The video transfer is outstanding. Some of the close-up shots are amazingly crisp on my widescreen. The 5.1 surround mix brings you right into the crowd. They even mixed in a little sound delay/echo in the rear channel to mirror typical stadium sound -- a subtle touch that really works well. They say a picture is worth a thousand words. That sure rings true here. Where the CD was less effective than many bootlegs at capturing the excitement of a Springsteen/E Street Band concert, the DVD was actually more satisfying than when I saw them when they passed through Chicago on this tour. (This is undoubtedly due to the fact that I was in the nosebleed section of the United Center, which offers the worst sound of any venue I've ever been to.) Buy this DVD. It will help you through the long droughts we have to endure between Bruce's tours.
Rating: Summary: Hope and Dreams Review: Some day someone will make the perfect rock concert DVD. Until then, this one will be the benchmark. Just short of perfect, it's got all the magic and energy of a live concert, but with better views of Bruce and the Band. Fifty-two years old, thirty-something years of performances behind him, Bruce Springsteen remains transcendant. Reunited with the E Street Band, he shows in song after song why he is the very best: there is nothing held back, there is nothing artificial and there's nothing between you and what he feels and believes. All those years down the road and he still believes passionately that rock and roll can save us and redeem us. The DVD has two disks. The first is the HBO broadcast, and also includes "New York City Serenade," largely a worshipful interview by Bob Costas. The second DVD has eleven additional songs, a few of them superior to much on the first DVD. Let me recommend especially "Land of Hope and Dreams," Bruce's answer to the spiritual "This Train Is Bound for Glory," and a lot more. Bruce's train, I promise, you, is a lot more inclusive. If "41 Shots" doesn't move you, if 'Layna's plea to her son doesn't give you goose bumps, then you must be dead. And if hearing the members of the E Street Band sing the promises of "If I Should Fall Behind" to each other doesn't give you hope for the next album, well, go break out your Lawrence Welk records and stop bothering rock fans. With each album, with each concert, Bruce Springsteen reaffirms his belief that rock and roll can save your soul. Buy this DVD. See for yourself.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful, almost better than being there! Review: As a Springsteen fan who hasn't had a chance to see him and the E Street Band live, this DVD of his performances in NYC was excellent. The quality of the picture and sound is superb. Crank up the home theatre system, sit back, watch and listen to the Boss and the band. This concert showcases the band's best - not all the songs were hits or even released as singles, but all are among Springsteen's best and the DVD shows the versatility of all the players in the band. Just awesome!
Rating: Summary: Bruce, Larger than Life in your living room Review: WOW! What an incredible document of this record-breaking stand at New York's Madison Square Garden. This powerhouse DVD-package includes some superb performances not contained in the HBO airings, and those alone are worth the full price of this 2-disc set. It is a MUST-OWN, for diehard fans and casual listeners alike. To listen to the fresh interpretations of so many classic Springsteen compositions, interpolated with such strong new material, is to relive nearly 30 years of rock and roll history, for sure. But it also allows us to take a hopeful glance forward at the many treasures surely on the horizon from this once-in-a-lifetime rock legend, still making utterly thrilling music.
Rating: Summary: Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band??? Review: Being a Springsteen fan, I waited for the release of this DVD - it was the first Springsteen DVD I purchased. Unfortunately it could have been better. The video could have been arranged better and picture quality is much worst than average. Sound perfomace needs much improvement! Some of the songs did even sound like him - he was so wild that he lost control. The recording needs a cleaner recording and mix, as it's lacks clarity. In my opinon it should be done over - something like greatest hits live; in control; shorter; improved sound (DTS) and video! If possible, I would return it. Please note that I viewed this on a high definition TV and audiophile sound equipment. I'm still a Springsteen fan, but it seems that I'll have to wait for a better performace.
