Summary: Clapton just keeps getting better!
Review: I was lucky enough to attend the show that was filmed and made into this DVD at the Staples Center in LA on August 18, 2001, and it was by far the best concert I've ever been to. I couldn't believe it when I heard that a DVD was coming out of the show that I was actually at, and so I waited patiently until it was released. This DVD is absolutely phenomenal, and Eric Clapton's talents are on full display. He doesn't miss a note all night on guitar, he most definitely knows how to pick a band, and his voice is absolutely great. His voice has not been his claim to fame, but after seeing this concert I was amazed at what a great vocalist he really is, and he is definitely underappreciated in this area. Some of the highlights of this DVD are the opener Key to the Highway (his acoustic playing is ridiculous), My Father's Eyes (great intro), Have you ever loved a woman (just for Billy Preston's B3 organ solo), Wonderful Tonight (for the extended jam at the end), Layla (of course), and the Billy Preston hit Will it go round in Circles, which Billy sings (and dances to!) After watching this DVD, any doubts you might have had about Clapton's abilities will be washed away, and you will be in absolute amazement.

Summary: Clapton with a great band
Review: I'm a big Clapton fan so this DVD could be average and I'd still rave. The concert is live without what I call "docuinteruptivecrap". Billy Preston plays keyboards and the song mix is jusy right with about 20% wooden to start the concert. Dolby Digital adds a nice hall feeling. If you like Clapton, you need this DVD.

Summary: Even if you just kinda like Clapton, BUY THIS NOW!
Review: I've been following Clapton ever since his days with the Yardbirds and went through college listening to Cream and yet I have never seen him live. Now, I feel as if I have. The DTS sound is incredible, the pictures are top notch and the music...well, THE BEST!!! Is it me or do the very best musicians avoid extraneous facial and body contortions and just play the...music? This has to be the tightest band I have ever heard. Fabulous songs from most of his distiguished career and some that I had not yet heard. The blues jam in the middle is unbelievable and the light jazz is a refreshing break. Wonderful!

Summary: REMARKABLE!!!
Review: If it's true that Eric is finished with touring, then he has left us with one masterpiece to view over and over again. It takes us through his career from Cream, Derek & the Dominoes, and his solo works up to Reptile. I saw two of these concerts on this tour and the DVD captures it as wonderfully as I remember it. Clapton's guitar work is fantatic whether on acoustic or electric. he guitar solos are out of this world especially on electric(even though I missed Ol' Blackie). The sound on DTS is superb. And as always his band is top notch. Actually there are twenty songs on the DVD "Will It Go Round In Circles" a Billy Preston hit is performd by him. As you can tell I'm not a writer but I just had to comment on this DVD and if you like this DVD, buy "Live At Hyde Park".

Summary: feelin good!
Review: In addition to all the things said above, I believe a large part of the great groove this DVD has, is coming from Steve Gadd on drums. Beautifully understated, Steve adds a feel to Eric's songs that is a wonder to behold. Wow! If your a drummer, don't miss this.

Summary: Lethargic performance, no electricity
Review: It pains me to write this, but this Concert DVD is tremendously disappointing. From beginning to end, each song performance is professional but lacks any spark. Eric's own performance is so laid back, you expect him to nodd off ....I know I did , waiting for soemthing to happen. Maybe it's his new persona, but Slowhand has turned into Slowman.

Summary: Not His Best, But Still Darn Good
Review: It's the job of any reviewer to be as unbiased as possible. However, if you've loved the work of an artist before you review a new piece, then those influences will carry over whether or not it's a conscious decision. I think this is the reason I'm giving this DVD four stars rather than three. Overall, would I recommend you buy this DVD? Yes. Let me tell you why I think you should have it in your library, but also why I'm not over-the-top enthusiastic. Positives:
The supporting band really puts their heart and soul into the performance. You can't fake the music. A normal CD recording of this concert would stand on it's own two legs. But this is DVD, friend. There's more than meets the eye (if you'll pardon the pun). You also can't fake the emotion evident by the video which is poured into playing the music either. I think Oscar winners would have difficulty pulling this off. The band really leans into it and enjoys playing as much as the audience enjoys experiencing their work. Another positive aspect of this DVD is the range of musical genres and talent Clapton displays. The songlist spans three decades of composition. And, if you include the wonderfully adapted "Over the Rainbow" closing track, he spans four styles of music and slam dunks each one of them: Rock, Blues, Jazz, and Folk. Without a doubt, the best track on this DVD is "River of Tears," an epic blues tune which tells a story and features Clapton doing what he does best ... closing his eyes, leaning back, and letting the blues pour out through his guitar. The Negatives:
This truly pains me to say it, but Clapton phones in his performance on the really classic tunes, especially "Cocaine" and "Layla." Especially because this is a DVD and not a CD, I was waiting to see a little gritting of the teeth, a little kick to the riffs because it's a live concert. Unfortunately, I think he goes on autopilot and just gives the audience the song as written. He's played these songs too many times and appears to be going through the motions. The best way I can describe their worthiness is "anemic." Clapton fan? You have to own this DVD. Casual Clapton fan? Get the Clapton Unplugged DVD instead. The range of styles and genres are fewer, but the enjoyment of performing is twice what this DVD offers.

Summary: I'm Downgrading My Previous Review
Review: Let's save us both some time. Here's why you should buy this DVD: 1) You really dig Clapton's work and will support whatever he puts out. 2) You want a DVD that spans four genres of music. 3) You get a kick out of seeing the backup musicians looking like they're having the best jam session of their lives. Here's why you shouldn't buy this DVD: 1) Your really dig Clapton's work and expect him to deliver his best work when it's being recorded. This is not even close to being his best work. 2) You have heard about how passionate Clapton gets when he's feeling the blues and it pours out of him a la Stevie Ray Vaughan, Buddy Guy, or Little Milton. You'll be disappointed. His performance on this DVD, with the exception of "River of Tears," is anemic. Would I spend the money for this DVD? Yes. Why? Three tracks are worth it. The rest is "ehhhhhh." Enjoy!

Summary: Same songs, but WOW what sounds and what a performance!
Review: Looking at the playlist, it seems like another Clapton concert, essentially the same songs as "Unplugged","24 Nights", "Chronicles" and "Friends in Hyde Park". These are all wonderful performances captured on DVD, but this concert has an extra dynamic quality to it. You find yourself drawn into this 2001 concert, you are enjoying the music and experience as much as the musicians. It could be the wonderful long solos by Clapton, the energy that Billy Preston adds by punctuating the songs with his organ, Nathan East's bass or the organ and electronic wind playing of David Sancious and Greg Phillinganes. The songs cover Eric's career from Derek and the Domino's through Reptile - acoustic and electric (with an unusual lack of guitar changes).
You will enjoy this concert over and over! Save yourself some money and get the combo DVD/CD package - you will want to listen at home on your theater system and while traveling.
