Rating: Summary: Brings back memories Review: I got this DVD yesterday and watched the entire thing. It was nice watching these videos again. Looking back now there were crazy hairstyles, wacky fashion and dangerous locations. I think this is something that every Duran fan should own. I do wish there were some of the unpopular videos like Nightboat and Careless Memories. The interior of the dvd case is a little hard to read. Don't they know that we're older now and can't read white on white font! Also, can someone please tell me how to get to the hidden footage!
Rating: Summary: Great videos! Review: It's about time! The true "vanguards" of music video have finally released the (almost) entire collection. The packaging alone gets 5 stars-as artful as you would expect from Duran Duran. My only (big) complaint is that the cd-rom content appears NOT to be compatible with Macs. If I am doing something wrong, please advise! It's hard to believe that in this day and age, someone would release a product that cannot be used for a Mac.
Rating: Summary: A great addition to your collection!!! Review: The reason I did not give this 5 stars is because: a) I hate the white on white lettering but that is a personal preference not a slam against DD or the DVD itself b) there are a lot of "hidden" features that the casual person may not know about. There is also MANY different verions of the vidoes and the songs themselves. That is why on this DVD you need to understand how to get the hidden features. For example there are 4 different version of "New Moon on Monday" on the video. My recommendation would be that you go to http://www.duranduran.com and go to the ASK KATY section and look for the info about the "Easter Eggs". If you can't find it there, then you should go into the Message Boards and search under the topics and search for "Greatest DVD". There are more videos that I would have liked to have seen on the video but I realize that there is a limit. I just wish they would re-release "Sing Blue Silver" and "As the Lights Go Down". Enjoy this I know that I am!!!!
Rating: Summary: Will not be buying Review: I was planning on buying this DVD since I've been a fan of Duran Duran since 1982. I'm very dissapointed with the tracklisting as many videos from their VHS video from years back (now out of print I believe) are not included. This is a very disappointing collection given the cost.
Rating: Summary: They've got their own way..... Review: Of ripping fans off. And this is yet another example. (Oh and Duranies, spare me the "well don't buy it!!" rant, it's old.) Just like everyone else has said, this is just a repeat ONCE AGAIN of the old DD videos that every fan already has. Sure, the 3 versions of NMOM is cool to have, but not worth the $34.95 MSRP. And what is with that? Erasure is releasing a DVD with 35 videos and another disc of really rare surprises....and the MSRP for that is $19.99!! If this release was priced a lot lower, I can see the justification of the content. But to charge such a high price, and give us the same old retread, I cannot do anything but give this DVD a very low score. Oh, yes, I am a fan that has paid many house payments on top of car payments for this band. 21 years later and 25 concerts later, I am just getting a little fed up of the scheming.
Rating: Summary: You could ask for more, but this is pretty darn good Review: Much has been said already by previous reviewers about this new issue's incompleteness. Purist fans are understandably disappointed that "Greatest" does not offer every single Duran Duran video ever made. However, it is important to understand that EMI/Capitol, under their current contract with the band, are legally entitled only to release a DVD version of the "Greatest" VHS issue, and while they are allowed to increase the content on the DVD as befits that medium, they are required to stay within certain content peramaters. EMI/Capitol do not have any rights to issue on DVD every single Duran Duran video; such an arrangement would require a new contract with the band. In other words, the "Greatest" DVD is the quickest way the label can get some Duran Duran videos into our hot little hands. EMI will issue more complete volumes in the future, but seeing as how we have had to wait this long for ANY DVD issue, we should feel glad we have anything at all at this point. Having said that, how does this collection stack up? Given the legal restraints facing EMI, they have done an amazing job of giving us so much. By browsing the track listing above, you can see that all the standard Duran Duran videos are here, from their earliest days ("Planet Earth," "Girls On Film," etc.), up through "Electric Barbarella," which was their last single on EMI. But beyond that, there are quite a few "hidden" extras included: - An alternate ending of the uncensored "Girls on Film" video - The Dancing on the Valentine version of "Union of the Snake" - Four (count 'em) alternate versions of "New Moon On Monday" - The long Arena version of "Wild Boys" - The "club version" of "Planet Earth" - The short, censored version of "Girls on Film" - "A Day in the Life" featurette - Nick and Simon discuss the recording and production of the album Seven & The Ragged Tiger - Interview by Paul Gambaccini with Roger, Andy and Simon about "Wild Boys" - Interview by Paul Gambaccini with John and Andy about "A View To A Kill" - Liberty album EPK - "Serious" multi-angle - The Wedding Album - Television Commercial - The censored version of "Come Undone" Technically, this is the best these videos have ever looked or sounded. Sonically, the mixes for some of the videos rival their remastered CD counterparts. If you have a complete entertainment system setup, these tracks will rock the house, to be sure. What is most impressive is to revisit these groundbreaking videos and see how well they hold up today. Rather than looking dated, they show just how much imagination the band and the video directors had for the then-new medium, and how much of that imagination has been lost in most videos currently being made. Duran Duran may have been - and may still be - much maligned as a pretty-boy rock band, but their videos were genuine contributions to pop culture, and can stand as art in their own right. "Greatest" may not have every single video you're looking for, but it is as good a collection as you will find on two DVDs. It will be more than enough for all but the most arduous of fans.
Rating: Summary: About time...but not complete. Review: I have been waiting since the time I started collecting DVD's for this. Although I will be buying it, I am disappointed that all of their videos are not included here. I understand that this is suppose to be a "greatest", but Duran Duran is the quintessential video band, and this was an opportunity to display just that. I do possess all of these videos on VHS, but wouldn't it be nice to be able to see in crisp, digital clarity the vibrant colors and energy diplayed in "My Own Way" and "Careless Memories", the eerie cinematography of "Waiting for the Nightboat", or the beautiful sweeping images of "Lonely in Your Nightmare"? Or how about hearing in digital quality the crafty percussion of "Meet El Presidente" and the clear, precise guitar pick in the introduction of "Too Much Information"? I think every Duran fan would agree that we're due a "complete" DVD.
Rating: Summary: This Is A Capitol Release Review: This is a release by Capitol Records whom Duran no longer records for. I'm not sure exactly how much input the group actually had in the video selection for this. My guess is Capitol is trying to cash in on the current frenzy the Duran Duran reunion is generating. For 2 DVD's one would hope that the complete videography would be available here. All in all it's still not a bad collection. I'll be getting it.
Rating: Summary: Same Ole Stuff Review: Anyone who has been a die hard fan of Duran Duran has all of these videos. Rabid fans having been waiting for a definitive collection for years with all the cool extended videos. Instead, we are given yet another collection of the same videos we could see on MTV (years ago-when they showed videos). There are a lot of videos not included like Meet El Presidente, Violence of Summer( just to mention 2 not included). Fans(especially American fans) have been waiting to see the hard to find videos like Breathe after breathe. The collection seems nice, but it just more of the same videos we already have. WE NEED A COMPLETE VIDEOGRAPHY!!!!!!
Rating: Summary: Do you believe in........ripped off? Review: Finally a collection of Duran Duran videos on dvd..About time!! But I think us fans have been short changed. This is not all the videos from the band.... in fact there are way too many missing that should be on this release to link their music making through to the present day, Such as: "my own way, night boat, Meet el presidente, Perfect day, Lay Lady Lay, Breath after breath, Femme fatale, Out of my mind, Somebody else not me, Do you believe in shame? Violence of summer, Too much information.... Even some long and forgotten Arcadia videos? These all could have easily been squeezed onto the double dvd. Repeating alternative versions of songs seems to be wasted space which could've been used to complete the video history a bit better. Who ever slapped this one together wasnt really thinking, or didn't bother to ask fans what they wanted to see or purchase. This is not a videology..there's too much missing.
