Rating: Summary: wake up Review: Duran has no musical talent. Duran Duran(Duran squared?) is no musical talent squared. Who actually likes these no talents? Look at one of their biggest hits... hungry like the wolf... HAHA! Just the title and lyrics make me laugh! HAHA! the music is real musicians worst nightmare. I just don't understand why Duran Duran made it past one album. I guess it's some 80's clouded head thing... Oh well. I think it'll be funny to see all Duran fans blasting this review...and then say 'dang anti-duran's, they're makin me hungry for a twinki'... mmmmmm twinki... I think ill have a twinkie and some no talent duran for breakfast....dar di dar di.... WAKE UP..... DURANDURAN SUCKS!
Rating: Summary: Frustrated again! Review: Ok- I LOVE Duran Duran and have been waiting for this DVD for YEARS. Sadly, this release is unfulfilling. There are too many videos missing that fans are dying to see again, but can't get anymore. The brief interviews/featurettes and alternate cuts of select videos are nice, but why hide them all? Who decided that "Easter Eggs" are a good idea??? It's just aggravating!!!As for the packaging- it sucks. Duran Duran are music video pioneers who provided MTV and its viewers with innovative, stylish, luxurious locales & visuals- and all they get is a plain white box??? And don't be fooled when you see that the package appears to have a lavish, colorful gatefold sleeve on the inside, perhaps stuffed with photos, artwork, & other goodies. There's NOTHING inside and I do mean NOTHING! Well, unless you count a track listing w/ director & producer credits (that you can't even READ because it's printed in WHITE letters on a WHITE background). And don't get me started about the inflated price of this dvd- I spent my lunch money for 2 weeks. I have to believe that the band had no hand in putting this DVD together. Maybe SOMEDAY, another DVD will be released that will include all the missing videos, commentary, remastering, etc. that SHOULD have been on this one. The thing is, I'm tired of waiting. The release of their new reunion album has already been postponed about 6 times. I expect to see it in stores sometime in early 2008. Followed by the Complete DVD Collection in 2010?
Rating: Summary: This DVD is "an all night party" for Room 7609 Review: First off, I ADORE this DVD! I am so psyched to have an official DVD and not that unofficial one (which I actually reviewed on this site about 1 1/2 years ago) which left off a great deal. Secondly, I am so happy to finally have the single versions of "Girls On Film" and "The Wild Boys" as a video. All of their other video tapes have the Night Version of "Girls On Film" and The Wilder Than Wild Boys version of "The Wild Boys". Thirdly I LOVE the movie of "New Moon On Monday"! Not only is it totally awesome but you get to see Simon's stellar acting ability ("Wait a minute!... I know this man!") Hey, he was a drama student as well as a child actor. Thirdly, I love the alternate ending for the Night Version of "Girls On Film"! The only two criticisms that I have for this DVD is that on the "Dancing On The Valentine" Version of "Union Of The Snake", you don't see the animated skeleton collapsing next to Simon at the end of the video and that they don't have that cool James Bond opening for the video of "A View To A Kill". Otherwise, this DVD totally rocks my multiverse! I just hope that everything Duran Duran has released on video will finally be released on DVD as well AND that we will finally get a DVD of the entire Sing Blue Silver tour that "Arena" and "As The Lights Go Down" were taken from. That's all for now... time for some Vanilla Quik! :)
Rating: Summary: Essential for Duran Duran fans Review: While it's a little bit disappointing that EMI didn't just release a complete anthology of Duran Duran's videos, this is the next best thing. Not only is it full of Duran's great music videos, but it also has some great hidden alternate versions of videos and interviews.
Rating: Summary: What did you expect? Review: Products like this should come with a warning label that says "May Not Be Suitable for Diehard Fans, Collectors or Obsessives." Any CD or DVD with the word "Greatest" on it means it's the band's and/or label's idea of what their best songs are, not necessarily the hardcore fan's. It's a career highlight DVD to play for your friends to give them a crash course in Duran Duran. If you can accept this reality, then the "Greatest" DVD is a lot of fun and a real blast from the past. I fall somewhere in the middle when it comes to DD - I have most of their official recordings, but no bootlegs or video collections. I also don't have MTV2 or any other source for videos these days, so I haven't seen most of these videos in years. I found myself really enjoying the experience of watching these videos again, sort of like lost friends that have found their way back home. Even overplayed videos like "Rio" or "Hungry Like The Wolf" are a lot more fun than what passes for videos these days. You simply can't make silly, campy, over-the-top videos like these anymore - maybe we're just too cynical these days. I found myself laughing (fondly) through most of this DVD. One thing "Greatest" does really well is establish a visual timeline not only of the band, but of the era itself. It's a journey through the music and sometimes ridiculous fashions of the 80s, as well of the birth of the music video art form and - at the risk of sounding too scholarly - our development into a society bombarded by visual imagery. Do I have any quibbles? Sure - I wish they had left off certain videos and included others. The video transfer is grainy and cheap looking in spots. I don't really need multiple versions of "New Moon on Monday." As far as the extras go (beyond alternate videos), they're short and not spectacular, but fun nevertheless. We see promotional films for the first album and "Seven and the Ragged Tiger," interviews with band members about other albums, photo and album galleries. Of all the alternate videos, the banned "Girls on Film" (including a version with a funny alternate ending), the short film version of "New Moon on Monday" (over the top, to say the least) and a VERY early Rumrunner Club performance of "Planet Earth," are true treasures. As for the difficulty of finding the extras, here's what you do if you, like me, have no patience to navigate through the DVD. On lizardkingduran.com or other fan sites, there are track lists posted of everything on the DVD. Hit the "Stop" button twice on your player and simply enter the track number of whatever you want to see. Why bother going on an "easter egg hunt"? As a side note, for those complaining that "Violence of Summer" isn't on the DVD, it actually is - or at least 70% of it. Watch the lengthy promotional piece on the "Liberty" album, and you'll find that it's bookended with the video, though most of it is at the end. Funny how this DVD devotes so much space to the "Liberty" album, when most fans and the band consider it to be their worst. If you're a DD completist, the recently released Singles box set, though unwieldy, is a much more valuable collection that this DVD, which is really meant for the general consumer. My advice if you're sitting on the fence - considering the outcry over this DVD from some quarters, there should be plenty of used copies floating around soon. Buy a used copy, and you'll be getting a good deal. At least until the complete, definitive, must-have, remastered, mulit-disc version arrives next Christmas (isn't that how it works with record labels?).
Rating: Summary: Great DVD Release Review: As a long time fan of Duran Duran, I have waited forever for this DVD and it looks and sounds fantastic. The videos never looked better, with colors vibrant and detail sharp. The audio, while only 2 channel stereo, sounds as good as the remastered compact discs. While some minor videos were not included, all of their major hits are here, as well as the never before seen "The Chauffeur". If you are a DD fan I would not hesitate at all to purchase this DVD. The following is info on how to find the Easter eggs included on the discs: • Go to Union of the Snake on the sub menu, hit the left arrow key, press play or enter on your remote and view the Dancing on the Valentine version. • Once you have played the first default version of New Moon on Monday, reselecting the video gives you a different version. Similarly, reselecting the uncensored Girls on Film reveals an alternate ending. Ditto Wild Boys for another version. • Enter Le Galerie de Duran by clicking the 'A' in the word 'GREATEST' on the main menu. This pulls up a gallery featuring the group's album covers and singles sleeves. When the Planet Earth single sleeve is enlarged, go to the bottom single sleeve (Girls on Film) and press the left arrow button. This takes you to a ''hot spot.'' Press play or enter. • On the Girls on Film (Short Censored Version) clip, click to enlarge the sleeve. Go to the Play screen icon and press remote's play/enter. • A Day in the Life featurette is available by highlighting the third single sleeve down while an album sleeve is enlarged. Hit right arrow key and then play/enter. • While the Seven and the Ragged Tiger sleeve is enlarged, press the up arrow key, then play/enter to hear the band discuss the 1983 LP. • Watch bandmates chat about the Wild Boys clip by pressing the up arrow key next to the screen's Play icon when its sleeve is enlarged. Hit play/enter. The group's John and Andy Taylor discuss the 007 View to a Kill clip, too. While on that sleeve, go to the Play icon, hit the right arrow, press play/enter. • On the second DVD, enter Le Galerie as on the first disc. To see the Liberty album's press kit, highlight that album's sleeve, slide to the left top single sleeve and press the up arrow key, then play/enter. Also, enlarge the Serious single sleeve, go to its parent album Liberty and press the right arrow key, then play/enter. • Enlarge the Come Undone sleeve. Go to Play icon, press left arrow key, then play/enter.
Rating: Summary: They have so much - yet gave so little:( Review: These DVDs are great - if you're only a minor fan of DURAN DURAN, but as a major fan of Simon and the boys; I felt neglected. If you're looking for lots of great extras - don't bother. They really didn't need to take up two discs with as little as they give you. The videos on the DVDs ARE their greatest hits, just don't expect much more(like their stuff from the 90's) so buy the set if you're a fan - because that's what we're stuck with for now.
Rating: Summary: Disappointing Review: Using the "hidden easter eggs" to see the remaining videos is gimmicky and useless. If you're having trouble finding them, simply use the "Title" selection feature on your dvd player and enter each number one at a time to cycle through everything (the first disc has 38 titles). The picture quality is shoddy. It is ridiculous not to have included ALL of their videos. Be warned: the 30 minute interview, lyrics, etc. are DVD-ROM only. It would have been cool to have had the band offer commentary on these groundbreaking (at the time) clips, but nothing. What would have been welcome are the concert film, "Sing Blue Silver", and the concept film, "Arena". The 18 minute "New Moon On Monday" is a nice surprise. Otherwise, buy at your own risk.
Rating: Summary: Not as definitive NOR is it fans biggest wishes coming true Review: Okay, it's nice to see 8 versions of "New Moon On Monday" (including the 18 minute version which makes sense of the sort of plot going on), but there's a lot of important things omitted. Their first video, "Careless Memories" - nowhere, along with singles like "My Own Way," "Meet El Presidente," "Violence of Summer," "Do You Believe in Shame?" and non-single video classics like "Last Chance on the Stairway," and "Waiting for the Nightboat." There's still a ton of stuff left and It's disappointing they ignored them.
Rating: Summary: Lame Product - Poor DVD Review: Are you kidding me! Duran Duran used to be the band that presented their material in a completely lush, artistic manner, quite beyond the pale of typical popular-music acts of their time, and look at this lousy DVD package! Makes me want to weep. First of all, the package design is just a remake of the VHS box of a few years back. Second, printing varnish as an ink is just stupid, can't even read the fine print. And where's the print-outs and booklets packed with photos of the band? The inner-sleeves of varied colored bars is just stupid waste of space! Second is the navigation - it's confusing and irritating and is the lamest easter-egg hunt I've ever went on! I never did find the hidden footage and it's so complicated that I don't even want to now. It isn't worth the effort. This is hands-down the stupidest DVD interface I have ever seen. I mean having the letter "T" as a sub-choice menu: what does that even mean? Last are the videos themselves: I'm sorry, but these are mastered poorly! There is a ton of film grain everywhere and artifacts galore! This is the crappiest mastered video I have ever seen on a music DVD collection yet! These plush videos deserve better treatment than this, c'mon! And the price is outrageous! I feel ripped-off. This turkey isn't worth more than twelve dollars at best. One reviewer makes a good point when they ask why older videos aren't included. Why not include some live footage as well. What about adding voice-over commentary by the band, laughing about making these wonderful videos? Face it, Duran Duran probably didn't have anything to do with the making of this crappy product. This is the product of a money-grubbing record company if I ever saw one! Lame product! Ignore it. I'm sorry I wasted my money. Can anyone say REFUND!
