Rating: Summary: Excellent Musicianship Review: If I had known this band was this good I would have been running to see them when they came to town. I have a large collection of concert DVD's and I keep coming back to this one. This band is dynamite. The sound and video quality are top notch. If you like Toto, even a little, grab this DVD!
Rating: Summary: What a show ! Review: If you ever wanted a DVD containing some of the most entertaining rock music, pick this one. What a group!Having seen this group on three occassions during their 25th Anniversay Tour, I can honestly say that they have done a wonderful job of transposing the quality of the whole event onto DVD. Some of the best musicians around today.
Rating: Summary: Wizards of Rock - (some compression issues w/HD xfer to dvd) Review: If you love classic rock and concert DVDs this is a MUST HAVE for your collection. And it won't gather dust either. You will bring it out again and again because MUSIC RARELY GETS ANY BETTER. Africa is probably my all-time favorite song and while it is phenomenal on this release, it is probably my least favorite on this dvd (That's how good the the other songs are)
But there are 50 other reviews telling you about the concert and track list. I want to focus on the video quality which is rarely treated in these type of reviews.
I was excited about this DVD and watched it in Hi-def at 3am in the morning when it was released on INHD about 1 1/2 years ago. The video quality was excellent, and the sound suberb. However, when I purchased the dvd/live cd combo recently, I was a little disappointed that the hi-def video bit rate seemed to be compressed and showed traces of graininess in the picture on my hd widescreen. I think if Toto had released the concert on 2 dvds, they could've chosen to keep the higher quality video feed w/o as much compression. Or they could've done a better job compressing the HD originals. However, the concert overall looks fantastic and unless you're using hi-end equipment you won't have any complaints...
But I wanted to include that for any of the purists out there who are also disappointed by the many concert DVDs that claim to be filmed in hi-def yet when they get compressed to DVD seem to lose the added resolution they promised.
Also, both the DTS and Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks are perfect. As is the live cd. which I purchased together with the DVD for only $15.99 at Circuit City in Jan. 2005.
The Music is unbelievable - these truly are the best musicians in the business.
Rating: Summary: Disappointed Review: If you're not a die-hard Toto fan, save your money. Though the sound is excellent.
Rating: Summary: Toto at their best but next time get another director ... Review: In a nutshell, Toto is fantastic on this DVD, the music and the mix are brilliant. A must have for whoever loves music. Why didn't I put 5 stars? Not because of the music. The down side on the DVD has nothing to do with the band at all but with the lightshow and the movie director. The way it was shot makes the show look as flat as an American Idol show. This does not reflect at all the atmosphere during Toto's concerts. Guys, get another director. Watch the tape, for example, of your superb performance at Taratata TV show, years ago, and the great work Pulliccino did with the directing. Hire this guy next time.
Rating: Summary: Visible Proof ToTo has Merit Review: It's been a while since I have had the opportunity to see ToTo live, so I was excited when this DVD was released. I have enjoyed the band for as long as they have been putting out music. I think this DVD could probably earn some respect with a few of those who claim ToTo is nothing more than a power ballad band. It was their old record company and radio who dictated what you have heard from the band in the past. Most folks probably know "Africa" and "Rosanna". They have been played a zillion times on A/C and 80's radio stations till they are fried. Thankfully,on this DVD, they sound better live than on the radio. There is a slight variation to "I Won't Hold You Back", but hey, it's a plus! A previous review stated that the medleys were frustrating, but in my opinion, they translate even better on this DVD than the live CD. I do wish that some of the songs performed in the medlys were the full length version, but that is just ungenerous on my part. It doesn't take away from DVD rating as far as I am concerned. Guitarist Steve Lukather has stated in interviews that he was not feeling too good this night and that he played terrible. On his worst night, he is better than most. Critics have attacked the band for 25 years, but other musicians know that the talent of this band is impeccable. They started as "studio" musicians for hire and have played on more sessions then they can even remember! To me, this DVD validates what true fans have known forever. The band is great, the music is great, and the band continues on at a level of excellence! It is great to see them perform Goodbye Ellenore, Gift With a Golden Gun, and White Sister! A bonus for ToTo die hards was the additional "behind the scenes" footage from the "Through the Looking Glass" tour. It's quite humorous at times! Live in Amsterdam-25th Anniversary is a "no brainer" for hard core ToTo fans, and it might just earn the band a few more.
Rating: Summary: Almost as good as being there Review: Maybe in some ways better (pause, no bathroom lines, no traffic to and from). This was a great concert and the perfomance and vibe from both the audience and the band comes through. The musicians in this band are just phenomenal. Paich and Lukather are standouts, but all of them are masters of their instruments.
Why not 5 stars? The mix was a little muddy and time has taken it's sad toll of Bobby Kimball's voice (I'd have to say it actually mars the perfomance in several spots).
All in all this is highly recommended.
Rating: Summary: A Fantabulous (Fantastic + Fabulous) DVD Review: My god, where do I start? First and foremost, this DVD is among the best concert DVD I have ever seen. I would place it on the same par as "Journey 2001" DVD. To me, "Toto" is the best and has always been among the elite bands along with "Journey", and this DVD just proves that they are the best in this business. The picture quality is perfect, the audio is excellent, the selection of songs is great and these guys can really play live on stage. Its an "out of this world" experience. Let me put it simply....It is as if you are "in a trance" inciting religious incantations.....AMEN. Steve Lukather certainly lets his guitar gently weeps.........NOT. He practically let his fingers run on the whole fret board leaving the guitar on fire. "Gift With a Golden Gun" is really a catchy music which sets the crowd really wild. "Hold the Line" is a classic, while "Rosanna" and "Africa" blew everyone's mind away. Those critics that shot this DVD down are great sinners for telling a lie. May god have mercy on their souls........
