Rating: Summary: Stating the Facts! Review: well, just to shine a little truth on the subject, some of you reviewers aren't quite with it!Derek T. did not replace Richard Betts as guitarist,he has been in the band several years now,Warren H. did!And as far as a review of my own,I have'nt seen it yet,but the Allman Bros.won't be the same without master Dickey!!Any Questions?Longbow
Rating: Summary: A fine concert video Review: Featuring new lead guitarist Derek Trucks, who replaced Richard Betts, this DVD outshines the mediocre 2000 live album "Peakin' At The Beacon", and it provides a great companion to the recent 2004 live album from the Beacon Theatre, "One Way Out".The Allman Brothers Band lost a characteristic voice and a great slide guitarist in Dickey Betts, but Derek Trucks fills his shoes admirably, and if 54-year-old Gregg Allman's vocals sound a little worn, they're still as soulful as ever. The 22-song track list includes both old an new songs...70s concert favorites like "Midnight Rider", "Melissa", "Come And Go Blues", "Whippin' Post", "Ain't Wastin' Time No More", and "Statesboro Blues", and excellent latter-day songs like "Soulshine", "Desdemona", "Maydell", and the haunting "Old Before My Time". Excellent performance. Definitely recommended (and it includes interviews and behind-the-scenes-footage as well).
Rating: Summary: Back to the basics Review: I am so pleased with the bros new sound. Don't get me wrong, Dickey is a great guitarist, but I think his influence on the bands music made them sound like a pop band in recent years. This new line-up gets back to what the Allmans are all about, Great jammin', southern blues influenced guitar rock. Warren is a master, and Derek can play with the best. The rest of the band is as sound as ever, and Greg's vocals sound awesome. This is the best the Allman bros have been since Brothers and Sisters.
Rating: Summary: DISAPPOINTING Review: I JUST CANNOT CONCIEVE AN ALLMAN BROTHERS LINE UP WITHOUT THE AWESOME DICKEY BETTS AND THOUGH DEREK TRUCKS AND WARREN HAYNES DO AN OK JOB ON THIS DVD.IT IS NO WHERE AS GREAT AS THE BROTHERS OF THE ROAD ON VHS TAPE FORMAT, WHICH HAD FEATURED DICKEY BETTS WITH WARREN HAYNES.I WAS ALSO VERY DISSAPOINTED WITH THEIR LATEST CD HITTIN THE NOTE(MINUS DICKEY BETTS).I THINK POOR DICKIE GOT A RAW DEAL FROM GREG.I WOULD AVOID THIS AND GET FREE BIRD THE MOVIE CD FROM LYNYRD SKYNYRD INSTEAD.LONG LIVE DICKIE BETTS
Rating: Summary: Oh Man...Brothers! Review: What a great band! What a great LIVE-BAND! Just a few words about this dvd: Buy it! I thought that (maybe) ABB was just an "old mans band" these days (after their guitarguru D. Betts left..or was he sacked?), just in it for the money. Boy, was I wrong! They are so full of life, and I have to say that I'm very impressed by young master Derek Trucks. He's young, but he plays the guitar like he's been around for ages. It's good to see that Warren Haynes is back in the band again. He's a really impressive guitarist too, and both of them have a way of playing the guitar that suits ABB perfect. The sound of the band today is just like it was in the early seventies, and Greggs vocals are as strong as ever. Very impressive drumsection!!! Their bassplayer got to be one of the best in the universe!?! This is a "you have to see it to believe it" dvd, so buy it!!!
Rating: Summary: Allmanasaurus Review: I read all of the great reviews here on Amazon and I just don't get it. As a long time Peach Head I just haven't been able to get into the new post-Dickey lineup. Jimmy Herring's crackly sound never jelled with the band's sound, Derek was a suitable replacement but is far too laid back, and Warren's style is too close to ... rock than blues-based rock of the Allmans. Warren was a great compliment to Dickey in the 90s, but now he's highjacked the band's sound and dilluted it to a cheap barroom Allman Bros-imitation. The new album had a few nice moments but was more Gov't Mule than Allman Brothers. Gregg sounded pretty good on the album, but was horrible on this dvd. Watching Gregg trying to muster the voice to sing "Melissa" was just depressing. The whole band sleeps through classics that have been done so much better (so many times) before and the band never seems to really wakeup. The addition of an actual horn was their true jumping the shark moment: Duane and Dickey used to play horn parts on their axes like Coltrane and Miles, Derek and Warren can't seem to cover that on their own. The band is really milking Hittin the Note. The thing that made At Fillmore East so fresh was that out of seven songs only two were previously released as studio cuts, and the two that were were expanded upon. Now their live albums are just concert performances of songs released the previous year, and now you can watch them on dvd, too. The band is having more fun, but they're a bore. Dickey may be playing smaller clubs but at least his band has some energy to it, and most importantly, a whole lotta joy.
Rating: Summary: Buy this DVD You will Love it! Review: There is not much I can say that will do justice to this DVD. New fans,Old Fans or anybody that enjoys good music & guitar playing will love this. The quality of the music, sound & camera work are amazing. The behind the scenes stuff is very interesting as well. A must have for any ABB Fan.
Rating: Summary: Back to the classic days Review: I grew up on the original Allmans lineup and even saw Duane at Manhattan Center and the Fillmore within 6 months of his untimely passing. Live at the Fillmore was a peak for the band which they have never really approached. The greater the influence of Dicky Betts on their sound the further away from their blues roots they strayed and the greatest band on the planet plummeted into mediocrity. Firing the doped up Betts has breathed new life into the Allmans as Derek Trucks has a sound and style which elevates the Bros back to their glory years. My son and i attended a few Allmans shows with Trucks and they were the best concerts i have seen in at least 25 years. The dvd captures the excellence and the dynamic sound of the current lineup. For the old time Allmans fan revel in the return to the glory days. For the hillbilly drugged up dickey betts fan you can go see him fumbling through a set with his group.
Rating: Summary: Dickey Betts, thats who Review: After seeing the Allmans religiously year after year in the 90s, I took a break and hadn't seem them in a few years since Jimmy Herring was in the band. So I was curious to know what they sounded like without Dickey. I had seen Dickey a few times in the interim and he still blows my socks off. However, I must say that after seeing this DVD he was sorely missed. The passion, fire, and melodic brillance of his guitar playing is missed. Yes, change happens and its not always for the better. Derek is a slide player and his non-slide playing is not that inspired nor are the phrases he comes up with. Dreams which used to be a masterpiece is melodic development is left flacid. Without any one of his league to push off Warren, his playing which used to be good when Duane was in the band is just ho hum. And the tone on the hollow body guitar he plays much of the show on is flat. Its is only when he breaks out the gold Les Paul does the tone of the old Warren come out. Gregg is in good voice which was nice to see and Otiel who I often felt overplayed is great and really holds it together nicely. You really get the sense the guitar players learned nothing from the legacy created by Duane and Dickey on this DVD. I am glad to say that I did not spend $50 to see the Allmans on their summer shed tours and will never see them with this line-up. I'll save my money and go see Dickey instead. Cheaper show and more inspired music.
Rating: Summary: they just keep getting better Review: if there was a 10 star rating this would be it!i love dickie betts, but the new allmans are just as good or better. i just recently got to see them live they did'nt dissapoint in the least i was awe struck, gregg playing and vocals were top notch. warren & dereck were supurb more than i had expected. this dvd blows me away picture & sound quality exelent. i have every thing they ever did including the solo albums this rates among ther top pieces of work. a must have.
