Rating: Summary: Deserves a listen, for all true PF and Syd Barrett fans. Review: I love the music, and I love the way that DG does SOYCD at the beginning, and his new song SMILE is great too, but all the covers of Syd tunes just sets this set apart, and to my opionion make it a great cd, but those in the camp that just want to hear commercial floyd may be upset, but relax and listen to Those SYD BARRETT tunes, they are great and DG does them total justice... remember Syd started PF...I have returned to say more about this recording. David seems very loose and ready to play. Seeing the special items in the DVD such as him and his backup singers in the studio/boat Astoria going over vocal arrangements and seeing his deft gentle hand in instructing them is really an added treat that was totally unexpected... most extras are cold and boring or just plain stupid, but this addition to the mix was fantastic. Again, if you enjoy Syd Barretts contributions to PF you will be in for a treat. I have read a couple other reviews and seen some rather low star ratings, with the comment(s) like 'If you are expecting PF or classic DG you won't find it on this cd...'or something written similar to that. I contend that this is really a true statement to how PF was started, or as close as we can get it through a surviving member of PF. The songs are all crafted and sound fantastic. This is totally worth your purchase on two different levels: 1. It is a good recording of Pink Floyd and associated music. 2. It gives a good brush up on a lot of Syd Barrett tunes that we didn't have up until this point. {Plus, David Gilmore was a friend of Syd's just like Roger Waters was in art school, so he knew Syd before he actually joined PF. Dave was a guitarist in the band called 'Jokers Wild' when recruited) So, with all that said, go get this and enjoy.
Rating: Summary: Dissent with the High Ratings Review: I don't agree with all the hype about this DVD. The concert seems flat. Selection of songs was fair. I don't think David put much effort into this. Dolby 5.1 is only for crowd noise. He didn't play that long. The only reason the DVD was longer is because they added music from another concert. When compared to Roger Waters "In the Flesh", (5 Stars), this DVD is poor. It appears Roger put much more work and effort into his concert.
Rating: Summary: Gilmour does it again Review: There is no denying the talent and profciency of David Gilmour as a guitarist and performer and through this DVD he proves it again. The concert is mostly played on acoustic guitar which sounds amazing considering that most of the Pink Floyd songs are just layers and layers of electric sounds and melodies. The stripped down version of Shine On You Crazy Diamond is brilliant. The choir backing Gilmour is amazing.I got goose bumps listening to the girl playing the celo, she added such a delicate and beautiful touch to High Hopes and Je Crois Entendre Encore.Special appearences from Richard Wright and Bob Geldof as well.Over all a mind blowing performance.
Rating: Summary: This is great Review: Anyone who likes DG will dig this. Sorta like listening to him in his living room. Very homey feeling, and just wonderful
Rating: Summary: Talent Talent Talent Review: Gilmour has guitar chops, stage presence, as well as a body of work that even many of the great rockers would cringe jealously at. And here he is with a unique show, captured for us lucky humans on DVD. He is tasteful, never overstated in this performance. The accompanying musicians are just the right touch. Comfortably Numb, Wish You Were Here, and Shine On You Crazy Diamond are, of course, awesome. Even the Division Bell numbers are right on the money. His voice is flawless, even well into his 50's. Where the hell did Pink Floyd come from? How come they were so good? I've always been convinced, even when I was a young teenager, that they can't be explained by ordinary words. My college roommate referred to them as God, I suppose the way people in the UK thought of Clapton back in the 1960's. Gilmour may not be God, but his music is probably listened to by him!
Rating: Summary: This DVD was incredibly simplistic yet totally absorbing! Review: The war between Roger Waters & David Gilmour really seems silly. Both of these individuals have created other-worldly music and both are talented almost beyond this realm. Roger Water's "In the Flesh" is a fantastic DVD concert and I highly recommend that as well. But Gilmour's stripped-down concert on this DVD is nothing short of a masterpiece! There are simply no bad songs on this DVD! Every cut is a treasure that gladdens and warms the heart and turns the soul inside out. You can tell Mr. Gilmour took great pains to keep the renditions basic and the supporting musicians are a wonderful accompaniment. "Dimming of the Day" will leave you in tears as Mr. Gilmour mournfully longs for his rest at home with his love from this weary world we live in. You will also enjoy his old Floyd tunes that are performed with subtle flourishes and nice modifications of the older versions. Mr. Gilmour has this uncanny voice that drips with emotion and that is so much of the allure I have for him as a performer. His voice is melodious and quite frankly emotes chills down my spine. You absolutely must hear his "Hushabye Mountain" if you have a little baby in the family. In a world full of nasty rappers and vulgar entertainment, this is truly an uplifting concert that just plain makes you feel good about life after you listen. The extra tracks include "I Put a Spell on You" and "Don't" which are also extremely enjoyable. After viewing this concert, I no longer pine for a reunion between Waters & Gilmour. Nothing could top the honesty and presentation of this concert. There is just no pretension here. Mr. Gilmour looks happy and talks quite amicably with the audience. This is so nice to see and proves that even with all his money and success, he still strives to present his music, (and Syd's and Floyd's), with the most sincere effort possible. Mr. Gilmour is nothing short of being the 8th wonder of the world!
Rating: Summary: Master Piece Review: Generally one wants to see and listen what one like, however there are some times where you get surprised by the choice of other people, this is one of that moments. See and listen this concert brings you the favorite songs of a monster of music and you finish absolutely delited by it.
Rating: Summary: uh? Review: I dunno what's more disturbing... To watch Dave's fat old face... Or listening this fat douche bag play Floyd songs... It's cool to hear an acoustic version of some floyd songs... once in a while... But this dvd gets very , very old , very soon.
Rating: Summary: Great Performance by a Great Artist Review: I was privileged to be at both the Meltdown concert and two nights during Dave's three night stint at the Royal Festival Hall in London. Dave did this gig because he enjoyed the informality of the Meltdown concert at the Festival Hall the previous year. It could not and was not intended to replicate the Pink Floyd Earls Court Concerts and I can see how some were taken aback by his choice of music. It was a very emotional event and the audience just wanted more and more of the same. For me Rick Wright and the bands performance of Breakthrough was a real treat. Dave's rendering of Richard Thompsons Dimming of the day is beautiful. Please see this concert not as a Pink Floyd concert but as a very talented David Gilmour having a great time with his friends and enjoying every minute of it as we all did.
Rating: Summary: MUST HAVE Review: This DVD is an absolute must have for any Pink Floyd or David Gilmore fan. It's awsome. Comfortably Numb is incredible! Shine On...is also mind blowing. Just get it! The crowd roaring in 5.1 Dolby Digital makes it a "real" experience.
