Summary: Not as good as the HBO special
Review: I eagerly awaited the arrival of this dvd. What a disappointment! The HBO special is much, much better. Sure this performance is more raw and unrehearsed, but who cares??? I would rather see and hear Barbra at her very best--even if it is overrehearsed. Also there is more music on the HBO special. This DVD blatantly omits "A Piece of Sky" where she sings in sinc with the film "Yentl." That was a MAJOR letdown. Also omitted is "Somewhere." This DVD just ends---why not include "Somewhere" as a closing act??? Don't throw out your worn VHS copy of the original HBO special---I definetly won't.

Summary: Better than the HBO special
Review: I found this version to be totally superior to the version we saw
on HBO. They are similiar, but her performance here is absolutely electrifying. As great as the later concert/s are, she is in better voice here only being the second performance.
As she says throughout the concert, she is obviously soaking in the adulation and ENJOYING the hell out of herself; and it shows.
She is relaxed and GENUINELY funny. The power in her voice on virtually every number is legendary Streisand. The Linda Richmond skit(Coffee Tawk..a.k.a Mike Myers) is hilarious. As other people have mentioned, it's a real treat to get to hear the extended versions of Lover Man, and the "SPeak Low/Guilty/I'm in the Mood for Love" medley among many others. Then we hear Barbra do an updated and thrilling version of "What is this Thing Called Love?" with heavy bass, tom toms, and really
cool Las Vegas style lighting. Being a staunch Republican (GASP!) Yes, Streisand has legions of conservative fans. A talent such as Barbra's has no political partisanship; however, we were thankful she keeps the liberal politics to a minimum,
even despite the "royal" treatment she gives Virginia CLinton Kelly, and Coretta Scott King, along with mentions of Hillary and Bill. (GAG!)...sorry, couldn't resist:)... Don't miss this DVD!

Summary: VERY DISAPPOINTED!!!
Review: I had this on video, so I thought when it came out on dvd it would be the same, but I was wrong! Two of my favorite things were missing on this dvd-- the 'Papa Can You Hear Me'/'Piece Of Sky' medley, which got a standing ovation on the video, and also 'Lazy Afternoon', also missing on this dvd. Instead we get a LONG piece with Mike Myers as Linda Richman! Nothing against Mike Myers, but WHY leave out such an important part of this show? I don't care for this dvd, and am VERY disappointed! They should have just transferred the video onto dvd, and been done with it!

Summary: Not the Same as VHS Version
Review: I just got my copy and saw this today. Not the same as the HBO version which a friend of mine "Preserved" from VHS to DVD even with a Menu Selection to boot. Her NY and LA concerts are far better in performance: Longer Notes, heartfelt soaring belts, and a much more solid stage presence. Here, feels "New" and nervous. (Ie. Mistake in "Evergreen".) Not the same punch without the YENTL Medley (w/c is basically what sets this as a better piece than the TIMELESS concert)...Plus you can tell song after song in ACT II, how much exhaustion she's experiencing due to big endings after big endings just spectacular.!! Ive waited and asked even the website for this DVD but alas, its not the same. I am glad I translated my VHS Copy to DVD, so I can have my own version of the HBO on DVD and I think I only have it in the world.

Summary: Dissapointing Editing
Review: I love Barbra Streisand's work but was disapointed at the editing changes done to the DVD "The Concert". The ommision of the songs from 'Yentle' was a disapointment to me. These were quite a highlight in the original release and I was Looking forward to seeing them on DVD. The concert audience also seemed to agree with me on this, as I recall, she received a standing ovation in respose to the 'Yentle' songs. Mike Myers (as Linda Richman) while talented is just not a good substitute for the omitted tracks. Excellent concert but lousy editing!

Summary: I'll Take New York!
Review: I really looked forward to the release of this DVD! I loved the VHS of The Concert (same show but filmed in NY)and was hoping for the same. This is the same but different, the dialogue is less polished, the jokes don't always work, the song selection is different, and it seems more like a trial run than the NY performance, which was filmed much later, towards the end of the tour, when everything worked perfectly. When Babs is singing everything clicks and sounds wonderful, but the banter and anecdotes between songs works much less effectively than on the video. The Concert should be re-released on video!

Summary: On this one, like One Voice before it Barbra PERFORMS
Review: I remember the 10+ minute standing ovation(for the Yentl/Piece of Sky medley) as if it were yesterday. To eliminate this segment from the video was simply mindless. Sure, there's the CD of this concert, but you won't experience the breathtaking duet betwen Barbra (on stage singing Papa, Can You Hear Me?) and Barbra (as Yentl, on the boat, coming to America singing Papa...Hear Me?). She did subsequent concerts, and versions of this song at later concerts during the late 90s, but they cheesed in comparsion to '94 which SHOULD be on this DVD. And what up with Mike Myers?

Your money is best spent on the VHS version of this concert.

Summary: IT'S A REVELATION!
Review: I saw The Concert when it debuted in August, 1994 on HBO, and was thoroughly entertained and touched by the whole performance, but found much of it, especially the spoken material, to have an overly-rehearsed feel. The new DVD of night 2 of the original MGM performances shows a Streisand that is relaxed and improvisational, if not always perfect. I betcha this is closer to the performances of her early club days than anything else currently available. No doubt she was tired and sweaty by the end of the performance, but it seemed so REAL!

Summary: The Greatest Concert
Review: I was one of the fortunate people who attended this concert. As best I can tell, this concert is mostly from the January 1 performance, the concert I attended. In particular, I remember her flubbing the lyrics to "Evergreen" that night.

Something essential to know in viewing this DVD is that at the time of these two concerts, it was thought that these would be it--there were no plans for a tour that had been made public at the time. There was an excitement in the air that night because we all believed we were witnessing a one (or two) time thing that would not be repeated.

I remember being struck with her warmth and connection to to the audience, her ease and comfort with the concert (although, in fact, I don't think she felt that way). At the end of the concert I saw, she told the audience that she had really enjoyed this particular concert, much more than the previous night.

I can tell you, we were all wild with excitement. It was an extraordinary concert and extraordinary experience. I highly recommend this DVD, despite the fact that she altered her material in the later tour--added songs from "Yentl" and dropped the Linda Richmond skit.

It is was an unforgettable experience (and I saw the "Timeless" Concert from the third row a few years later). Don't miss this opportunity to see what we all saw and felt on January 1, 1994. Now, that night was timeless.
