Rating: Summary: The spirit of Rush still shines Review: Rush in Rio is a must for the symphonic rock fan. I only heard and saw them live in Rotterdam (the Roll the bones tour). Of course I have all their other (live)albums, but this is one not to be missed, a perfect document! The music quality on this DVD is good and the show in Rio is great. The camera shots are, in my opinion, sometimes from to many different directions. For me it's a suprise that even the vapour trail tracks can compete with the music from the 70&80. The film "the boys in Brazil" is a nice extra. I hope that Rush will shine their light on Europe again. Every big Rush fan will miss some material on this DVD. For me, Rush in Rio is one big victory.
Rating: Summary: redisover rush, really racuous in rio Review: I, like so many a Rush fan discovered the distinctive canucky-vibrations of Rush while growing up detached and subdivided in the mass production zone. Translation: White suburban teen craving music I could identify with. Sound familiar? I was a rabid Rush fan up until "Roll the Bones" came out. I once gave it a listen. Eh, it's ok until...wait a minute. Rap, is that RAP I hear in the title track? Ugh, what a heartbreak, Rush is no longer my favorite group, in fact for the next 12 years I shall bash them mercilessly. Look who now is eating humble pie now, along with his words, while choking on the two feet he had inserted into his mouth. This DVD is fantastic, an incredibly satisfying experience. The repetoire is here is varied and fresh enough to satisfy the casual listener (Tom Sawyer, Distant Early Warning, Spirit of Radio) to the hard-core fanatatic (By-tor, Natural Science and Cygnus). I do have to register a few complaints though: they didn't feature anything from "Hold Your Fire". I mean, come on; "Time Stand Still" is one of their biggest post-Moving Pictures hits! As for the audience...one could not ask for a more enthusiastic and energetic group of people. They truly ARE part of the show, and it would not be right to exclude their singing along, and their rabid reactions to the songs. Having said that, the final mix could have toned down their level just a tad. Don't get me wrong, I was right their with them, feeling their joy and singing along. At times however, I wish I could hear more of Geddy's singing and less of theirs. I feel Neil's drums could have been brought into the mix more as well. If you compare his sound to here to that of "A Show of hands", the former pales to the latter. However, this is all just nit-picking. These guys are still on the top of their game. Wonderful musicians, songwriting that is STILL ahead of today's tripe on the radio. Flawless performances. Geddy's voice has improved, he can still hit the high notes required in 2112, but has lost that screechy, grating edge. It's a good thing IMHO. One should not forget that these three can still entertain, know how to have fun, and provide the occasional laugh during their show. This is the DVD and live CD set to have. Get it. Discover them for the first time, or fall in love wth them all over again. P.S...."Roll the Bones" is a beauty, eh?
Rating: Summary: Rush's BEST Live Video! (or DVD) Review: I saw Rush during their Vapor Trails tour a couple summers ago, and watching this DVD almost takes me RIGHT BACK to July 9, 2002, the night I saw them. I was 5 years since the band toured before the VT tour, and they finally came back with a GREAT album (which is underratted by alot of fans for some reason), and a VERY successful and outstanding world tour. It was really cool to see some old fan favs played again, such as Tom Sawyer, New World Man, The Spirit of Radio, Limelight, The Trees, etc... as well as some songs that havn't been played live in a while like The Pass, Vital Signs (which is only on the Rio 3-disk CD), La Villa Strangiato, By-Tor, and Working Man...and obviously a good bit of their Vapor Trails material, such as Earthshine, One Little Victory, and Ghost Rider.Disk 1 contains the ENTIRE show that the boys did in Rio, Brazil. The setlist contains: Tom Sawyer, Distant Early Warning, New World Man, Roll The Bones, Earthshine, YYZ, The Pass, Bravado, The Big Money, The Trees, Freewill, Closer To The Heart, Natural Science, One Little Victory, Driven, Ghost Rider, Secret Touch, Dreamline, Red Sector A, Leave That Thing Alone!, O' Baterista (Drum Solo), Resist-unplugged, 2112 Overture/Temples of Syrinx, Limelight, La Villa Strangiato, The Spirit of Radio, (Encore medley) By-Tor/Cygnus X-1/Working Man. Disk 2 contains and hour long (or more) documentary of the band, which is TOTALY awesome! It shows footage that most Rush fans would NEVER think they would get to see from the band, such as backstage footage, interviews w/ the band (yes...including Neil, which is really cool), tour rehearsal footage, the band's arrival to Brazil, press footage, and even Alex goofing off in his hotel room, which is HILARIOUS! Also on Disk 2, is a few songs that were taken from Disk 1, that you can watch in multi-camrea angles, which are La Villa, YYZ, and O' Baterista. There are also a couple hidden 'bonus' videos on there, as well. Now, I won't tell you HOW to access those videos, but I CAN tell you what they are...one is the full cartoon sequence that was shown on the video screen during the tour while the band ws playing By-Tor & The Snowdog, and the other is the 1975 music video of "Anthem", from the band's Fly By Night album, which is a REAL treat. I have seen Rush in concert 3 times, and I am only 19 years old! I saw them when i was about 10, on their Counterparts tour, then i saw them when I was about 12, during the Test for Echo tour, and I saw them a couple years ago on their Vapor Trails tour. It's a MAJOR shame that there are not many other people my age who like Rush. Most of them are into all that other crap like Eminem, 2-Pac, Slipknot, Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, DMX...and all that other dumb stuff. Now days, in order for musicians to get noticed, they have to use the 'F' word in EVERY sentence of their lyrics, and/or do something EXTREME (but STUPID) in public. It's REDICULOUS! But anyway...this is a GREAT DVD for ANY Rush fan, hardcore OR casual. Also, the band is planning on releasing their OLDER concert videos on DVD later this year, which I am REALLY looking foreward too. The one's they are releasing are Exit...Stage Left, Grace Under Pressure, and A Show of Hands. AWESOME!!! Also, Rush is gonna kick off a 30th Anniversary tour this summer, too! I don't know if Rush will ever release another live DVD/CD, but if they don't, that's cool...b/c Rush In Rio is THE ULTIMATE live Rush experience. But then again, if they DO release another live album in the future...GREAT! Geddy, Alex and Neil...you guys are the BEST! -Matt
Rating: Summary: Great show, but... Review: The performance is excellent. They are one of the best bands around. Video content is great, good coverage of the show, great use of camera angles. It was a great show. The editing should not have jumped around so much, but it is not too distracting. However, this is NOT anamorphic widescreen. It is 1:78 matted 4:3. In fact the video quality was merely OK, not as good as other concert DVDs I have seen. The audio quality was also not good. Geddy Lee too far down in the mix and and the crowd was too high. Overall the audio was muddy and indistinct. I have heard better bootlegs. If they went to the trouble of shooting such a great show, they should have done a better job with the audio and video.
Rating: Summary: a head RUSH Review: I think most RUSH fans will like this dvd.I enjoyed the energy of the crowd and wished I could have been there. When I first heard RUSH in the mid-70s I thought they would be the most popular band in the US eventually.Well I was right,I just had the wrong country.I've heard there music evolve to a more technical and sophisticated sound and they still put out some great songs but if you want to hear some good early rock-n-roll check out their early stuff.Got to go,I'm still trying to find the Easter egg.I hope its not at the end of the second disc because I'm having trouble with it.
Rating: Summary: must buy for any Rush fan! Review: this is the best rush dvd out right now ( exit stage left on video is still better ) so go buy it or live a sad, worthless life.. amazon needs more death metal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rating: Summary: The Ultimate Rush Concert Review: wow. That's this is a nutshell. I've had the privilege of seeing these guys live, and even though the tickets are expensive and hard to get, they're worth every penny. This DVD captures just a hint of what these guys are really like live, and it's still one of the best concert videos I've ever seen. These guys are unreal. And, it seems, over 40,000 Brazilians agree. The crowd is so enthusiastic, and the music is so good, with some great classics like By-tor and the Snow Dog, La Villa Strangiato, and Natural Science. These guys blend a great selection of their classic staples with some of their newer songs for a very strong 3-hour set. If you haven't yet seen these guys live, then you have to check out this DVD. And if you have, then you REALLY should check this out.
Rating: Summary: Rush in Rio Review: This is just what us Rush fans have been waiting for... I really hope that if they tour again soon that they do another! If there's any Rush fans out there that hasn't purchased this yet you better get on it... you won't be sorry..
Rating: Summary: The REAL scoop on this DVD Review: Like most people I tend to gravitate towards the negative reviews to see what other people don't like about the product. After reading some of the negatives I was reluctant to make the purchase but did anyway....at the end of the day it's only $27.00 I have been a Rush fan since 1981 when for about 5 or 6 years I was a hardcore fan. After seeing the boys on the VT tour my spirit has been somewhat rekindled, not necessarily by the new album but I have realized they were such a huge part of my life. I wandered away from Rush after the release of PW because I felt the music was changing from what Rush was built on. I am also a collector of Rush memorabilia. The review: The only negative I can agree with is the frequency of camera switches...it is indeed mind boggling and doesn't give the viewer enough time to really enjoy what is being shown. This seems to be more apparent in the early stages of the DVD as I either got used to it or they become less frequent as the show progresses. Other than that the show is fantastic. Although I do have a 5.1 surround system I cranked it up in stereo and was pleasantly suprised. This is NOT a DVD MUSIC VIDEO of Rush...it is a CONCERT DVD therefore the crowd noise is fine. Geddy's vocals are great and the level of crowd noise suits the show. After all it's supposed to give you the feeling of being at a show...I would say they did a pretty good job. Bytor and the Snowdog had me pushing the speakers to the limit....ahhhhhh! The added bonuses are also worthwhile. A rare glimpse into the band on the road. Trust me...if you are a fan of Rush this DVD will not be a disappointment. Buy it and enjoy a great show.
Rating: Summary: "MIXED" Review: LOWS: My best guess is that this video would not have been released were it not for some compelling (i.e.-contractual, legal, etc.) reason to do so. Something is fundamentally wrong with it: I sense some problem that couldn't be avoided or couldn't be worked through, and I'm not "techy" enough to pin it down. The (sound) production is poor. The mix is little more than a wall of noise, and I find that much of the recording is harsh on the ears. The voice is buried beneath the sludge of a distorted guitar and bass, and these tones are (in places) so abrasive that I continually adjust the volume as I watch the show. You'd expect this with some bands, admittedly, but it ain't Rush! While I don't have the best entertainment system that money can buy, it is modern enough to find some acceptable adjustment to the audio. I've noodled at every switch and button on the console and I can't get the sound right for this one. I see that other reviewers have noted the same, and I can only surmise that this recording sounds no better to the producers or to the band: they likely were not able to do better with a recording beset with so many production problems, and had to send it out as was. HIGHS: Brasil. I'd never have guessed a band like Rush would have become so popular in that musical climate. When I think of Brazilian music, I think of sophisticated and dulcet sounds of Sergio Mendes and Antonio Carlos Jobim. This shows precious little knowledge of the world of Brazilian jazz, admittedly, but Rush is a different animal altogether. I know that a musical culture is both complex and dynamic, and ought never to be "reduced" to a few key figures are influences. The enthusiasm of the Brazilian fans is infectious, and I can't help but catch some of that energy as I see tens of thousands of fists pounding the air to a well-worn Rush anthem. The new songs are played with an energy and attention that absent in the older ones, which sound both tired and hurried--or "rushed." The documentary is a treat for fans who (I know) will purchase a Rush product no matter how good or bad it is.
