Rating: Summary: Sound problems in DVD Review: yes the sound is not great, but if you watch the "boys in Brazil" documentary you'll understand why. Tropical rainstorms had washed out the stage and damaged equipment. The audio feed to the recording truck being the biggest casualty, and with only a few hours before the show was supposed to start it was looking doubtful whether the show would actually happen. Rush are meticulous soundcheckers and had they had the opportunity to get one; I'm sure the sound would have been great, but for the aforementioned reasons they didn't get one, so everything was done "on the fly." This is not ideal, but given the amount of money involved in a production of this magnitude, and the fact that so many people had turned out to give them a roaring welcome could anyone in all conscience not go ahead with the show, certainly Rush couldn't. Let's not forget that Rush turned in the performance of their lives, and to that end have more than adequately done their job, they are not in control of the overall sound or vision and any concerns regarding them are little (if anything) to do with Rush. There has been huge expectation regarding this dvd, and if Rush had pulled it because of poor sound quality there would have been a HUGE amount of very disappointed fans. I personally feel that this is an amazing performance which for me trancends the fact that the sound quality could have been better, considering the difficulties thay had to endure; I'm amazed it sounds as good as it does

Rating: Summary: What a show!!!! Review: If you like Rush and you had a chance to see them on the Vapor Trails Tour, then you know what this DVD is all about. When all the older acts are doing their reunions and end-of-the-road tours, you notice that most (Not all, assuredly) are doing anywhere from 45 to 70 minute sets, jamming all the hits into the end of the show and seeing what comes up. But not RUSH! Our boys from Canada kicked off with Tom Sawyer and never looked back. No opening act. No watered-down half-set. No. They came, they rocked, the stayed all night. It was three hours of non-stop (well, maybe just a little break in the middle for 'mental recuperation')good tunes. Alex with his neon-lined Marshalls behind him, Geddy with a row of spinning clothes dryers filled with red t-shirts at his back.... The show was what most legends SHOULD put on. A long, glorious set spanning the years, leaving no stone unturned. With the exception of Caress Of Steel, no album lay untouched! It was awe-inspiring and awesome, and for once in a good long time, well worth the price of admission. Hats off to them! And let the other legends take note that $50+ should still bring you a full concert packed with pure entertainment. RUSH remain gods!
Rating: Summary: You can't please all the people all the time Review: I believe that there's no need to argue with the reviewers here. As someone said, that's one of the little subtleties of the Internet; everyone can post their opinions. Instead I'm going to do my (hopefully unbiased) review of the DVD. I have to say that I LOVE Rush, but I'm not a Rush inconditional (there's no way I can listen to "Red lenses", even with a gun pointing at my head, for example). That said, let's begin. Video. The overall quality is pretty good, except from two or tree cameras that stand behind Neil and (I think) Geddy. Sound. You get Dolby Digital 5.1 and 2.0 sound, and no DTS. By now you surely have read the whining about how much the crowd sounds. And yep, it's true. The crowd sounds a lot. And you know what? I like it. Damn it, it's a LIVE performance!!! all you "audiophiles" with a zillion-bucks equipment out there, go on and put your studio CD's (hope you have MFSL editions, it would be a loss to the world if your ears get hurt), if clean sound is what you want. Come on, I love "Exit...stage left", but to be honest, it's just way too polished, cold and, at some points, unnmoving. My only gripe is that Lifeson's guitar sounds low most of the time. The sound of this DVD *is*, IMHO, how live recordings should sound. But again, I'm not everyone; If you're expecting another clean, inmaculate, "Exit..."-type of live performance, look elsewhere, or wait 'til it's released in DVD. Editing. the view changes a lot. I agree with other people that it could have been better. And that's about it. Set list. Pretty good. I think it has a good mix of old and new songs. The crowd favorites are here ("Limelight", "Freewill", "Tom Sawyer"), songs that do not get played often ("The pass"), obviously songs from the Vapor Trails Album, and an old song encore ("By-Tor & the Snow Dog/Cygnus X-1/Working man). Overall very good. It could've been nice to watch them play "The camera eye", "Lakeside Park" and/or other old songs, but again, you can't have everything. Band performance. As usual, top of the line. Some songs sound just like the studio record, specifically YYZ; and Neil Peart's solo is totally awesome! and there's this moron (anywhere in these reviews) that say that he "isn't anything to what he used to be 22 years ago"...of course not! he's 22 years older, and hes playing better, probably better than ever. Any music listener will tell you that, wheter it's a Rush fan and/or drummer or not. And finally, something more: people like you was the reason "Limelight" was written (comments on Peart's equipment: "for concert use it doesn't impress me" what??? sell your equipment, get at least $15k back and get a life!). Back to constructive criticism: like another reviewer said: even with the multiangle views, I still don't know how he does it. Watching the boys in their 40's perform at this level, makes you wonder what has happened to music (and musicians) these days. Extras. Decent; On the second disc you have "The boys in Brazil" a entertaining documentary, and multiangle views of O baterista (drum solo), YYZ and La Villa Strangiato. By the way, the angles shift views from time to time, wich is odd: what's the poing of an angle if it's not fixed? at least that's odd to me. Another extras are a couple of easter eggs; one video from the concert that was used during "By-tor & Snow dog", and a 1975 video for Anthem. DVD Package. Important to some, trivial to many...thank god, this DVD and the Chronicles DVD are day and night, respectively. I remember saying "whaaaat??? where's the booklet???" when my Chronicles DVD arrived and I opened it. The package is really good looking; it has a little booklet with some Neil Peart impressions on the tour, specifically in the later part (Mexico City, and obviously, Brazil). Overall. Excellent, top-notch LIVE performance from Rush, and at last, a very very good DVD. And hats off to the fans! I would like to add that I have a Sony STR-DE475 receiver with standard speakers, a flat-screen 25" Sony WEGA TV, and a Pioneer DV-355 DVD player. That's $1k (at least when I bought it) worth of equipment...not exactly top of the line, as you may see, and in fact far, very far from it. I watched half concert with the receiver, and half with only the TV sound, and both are good. Wrap up: don't care about labels as "REAL Rush fans", "die-hard Rush fans" and stuff like that. If you like Rush (and even if you have never heard of them), and generally speaking if you like music and live performances, buy this DVD. You won't be disappointed.
Rating: Summary: Reality steps in Review: Let's face it. Some people will complain about everything. They will find fault in something that may even be near perfect. I've learned to ignore that. That said, this is not the best Rush show I've ever heard. "All The World's A Stage" was raw power rock at it's best. "Exit... Stage Left" was better, more polished. And "A Show Of Hands" was even better and even more polished. All three worth the price for the CD or album, many times over. In fact, I have worn out several copies of each. "Different Stages" however was sloppy, the overall sound was bad, and it was not even one show. (Hence the name.) The same can be said for this album, with the exception that it is one show from beginning to end. The band played great on both this show and "Different Stages". But as has been said before, for a band of Rush's stature, you would think they would have brought their own recording rig to record the show. And you would also think that Sanctuary would have done something to improve the quality of the recording as well. However, if you have ever seen Iron Maiden's "Rock In Rio" DVD, you will notice it has similar audio problems. There are numerous places where the sound could have been fixed in post production, but it wasn't. And I find it odd that two of the most professional bass player\producers in the music business (Geddy Lee and Steve Harris) would let these things slide. Yeah, I know they're pushing 50. So what? If you can't get a good recording rig in Brazil, why record there? Sure, the audiences are great. But the world is a big place. Find somewhere to record where quality can be assured. It isn't that hard to do. And before anyone starts whining saying I don't know what I am talking about, I will just say "think about it". If they could produce a top quality recording in the 1980's, they surely could do so today with better technology. Rush's "A Show Of Hands" and Iron Maiden's "Live After Death" were both great live shows recorded with lesser quality equipment than is available today. This concert and Iron Maiden's show at Rock In Rio would have been great to see live. But the DVD's of them are very lacking. And I'm sorry to say it is disappointing coming from such professionals. [End Rant]
Rating: Summary: you audio geeks suck richards Review: Attention seeking dorks by the droves wrote to slice this album probably just for recognition. The sound wasn't perfect..whoo hoo, I should just learn not to like the DVD. You all make me sick. You're just jealous because the only thing you can contribute to the music community is knowing how to twist a knob, that is, when you're not too occupied vigorously stimulating it. Musicianship shined in this DVD, Rush sounded so studio quality I swear YYZ sounded just like it did on the original album - only with the intensity of a raving mad crowd of 60,000 people behind them. It's mine, it's a keeper, and I don't care what these soundgarden rejects say about it. It sounds like Rush, and that's all that matters. Later.
Rating: Summary: So glad they made this... Review: This DVD highlights the magic of Rush. At first when I began watching it the multi-camera angles made me a little dizzy, but after listening to just one song... I didn't even notice it anymore. The mix was as perfect as they could get. They played with such energy and spirit it made you feel as if you were part of the concert. The crowd response in Brazil was unbelievable - unlike any concert I have been to in the US. The extras are most enjoyable, like the long awaited documentary. I'm glad they put this in the DVD format...the digital technology does thier music justice. A tremendous trio with incredible talent.
Rating: Summary: For those with negative comments about this dvd Review: For all of you with big $$ stereo systems that claim the sound is not up to your standards, you are idiots. This is great video with great sound. Keep in mind (you idiots) that this is not studio sound, it's LIVE. For all the bigger idiots that are stupid enough to say the band lacks talent... this is by far the most talented rock band now and ever. It's obvious that your negative comments come from jealousy, because you will never have the talent that they have. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the sound or video on this dvd. BUY IT, IT'S AWESOME!
Rating: Summary: Major Disappointment Review: Just piling on at this point but the sound truly is awful. Led Zeppelin DVD, with the source recorded some time ago, shows what a good producer can do. Rush should be ashamed to have put this out.
