Rating: Summary: Geddy lost in Sound Review: Rush in Rio is a great collection of live Rush greats but for the price I paid for this DVD I was let down big time...I found myself concentrating more on trying to hear Geddy Lee's vocals (that are constantly buried by the rest of the band)...Rather than enjoying what could have been a five star masterpiece...I cannot believe the injustice done to the group & fans by releasing this DVD without first seriously listening to the demo!...Don't get me wrong...its Rush at their best...I'm just very bummed out over what could have been!
Rating: Summary: Great dvd Review: If you are Rush fan this is what you have been waiting for. The sound on this is overheard by the crowd noise. But you see the boys live and you have interviews. Rush doesn't really do that many interviews. The music is the same as on the cd. Rush had an overwhelming response while in Rio. I think they were shocked to learn how big they were there.
Rating: Summary: great Performance, amazing crowd, superb show Review: Well people... I have to say that I was there at the show in Rio at maracana stadium and I am glad to see that the DVD captures the intense energy of the crowd entirely, just as happened there. The sound and video quality are great. Geddy lee's bass sound is outstanding, neil peart drums are crisp, clear and amazingly terrific, lifeson guitar is good also (maybe it could be a little louder and would be perfect) and the crowd noise fits up perfectly, not too high and not too low... It is impressive to see that after 30 years rush can still full a stadium and rocks down the house! great buy! go for it Rush
Rating: Summary: LONG AWAITED....... Review: and disappointed! the soundingeneer was on crack or what....;
Rating: Summary: killer rush dvd Review: If you have any interest in what a rush concert is all about, buy this dvd. The sound, visuals and documentary are all outstanding! I have been a rush fan since 1978 and have not missed a concert tour in the past 25 years. This is the best representation of the rush experience I have found yet. I absolutely enjoyed this dvd!
Rating: Summary: Sound is trash Review: If you are a Rush fan, just stop reading and buy the DVD. It gives you a feeling of being there which is wonderful. But if you care about actually listening to the music, it is about the worst sounding concert DVD I have ever heard. If you put the sound in 2 channel it is marginally better. The sound is better than a bootleg, but that's about all your can say. It's just a big mush.I got two DVD's this holiday season, the other being the Peter Gabriel Growing Up Tour and that is an example of how a DVD concert should sound. The Rush DVD is the opposite end of the spectrum. I won't be listening to it a second time. I would like to give it zero stars because without sound you have nothing, but the video is well done and its still Rush and it gives you the chance to see a full concert, so I have to give it two stars. I'm really trying to warn anybody who would consider awful sound to be a showstopper. Otherwise, go ahead and buy it.
Rating: Summary: A total RUSH Review: I was lucky enough to see a show during this tour. This is a great capture of the excitement and fun of this show. For a RUSH fan this is a great DVD to own. It also comes with a pretty interesting documentary that was intersting enough to warrent the purchase of this DVD. As I sit here and watch it for Xth time, I wish everyone could enjoy and experience it.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely incredible Review: I had the priveledge of seeing Rush the very first night of their Vapor Trails Tour in 2002 in Hartford, CT (6/28/02-my 17th birhtday nonetheless!), and they were unbelievable. They sounded like they had never taken the 5 year hiatus, all 3 of them sounded incredible, and they were very energetic and enterprising, despite pushing 50. This DVD, shot in Brazil the last night of their comeback tour, reminded me of that incredible performance I had witnessed, and how positive their music made me and many others feel. The first disc in this set was the actual concert, which was beyond words. It was a very diverse setlist, ranging from new stuff off of Vapor Trails, old classics (Tom Sawyer, Limelight, Freewill, etc.), their 80s output (Distant Early Warning, Big Money), their genesis as a hard rock band (Working Man, By-Tor), and complex instrumentals. They seemed to have enjoyed themselves on stage, even though Neil Peart as always looked very stern, and they poured their hearts on every note. Geddy Lee's voice occasionally struggled to hit a high note, yet his vocals are still as good as they always have been, and Alex's prowess as a guitar player is still intact. The second dsics was the documentary "The Boys In Brazil," which gave very good insight into Rush's trip to Brazil, and the catastrophes they endured, particularly the threat of rain which affected their shows. They talked about what it was like to be out on the road, and how they got through the tour (one word: soup), and showed them warming up (even on a normal 5-piece practice kit, Neil Peart still is the greatest drummer I've ever seen), relaxing, joking around, and rocking out. The videos for "By-Tor" and "Anthem" are awesome too. This is an amazing DVD, and it is a must have for any Rush fan.
Rating: Summary: RUSH's Brazilian Fans WILL Blow You Away! Review: I know RUSH. I know their albums, and I have been to enough RUSH concerts in person to have a very good feeling about how RUSH is in concert. However, nothing could have prepared me for the things I saw in this stupendous RUSH concert DVD. RUSH "IS" Alex Lifeson, who plays about 100 guitars on stage, Neil Peart, who plays on more drums than a human really needs in his drumkit, and Geddy Lee, who plays practically every electronic gizmo not used by the other two. RUSH has always mixed musical virtuosity with a rock-anthem bombast and prog-rock sensibility that makes some people smile but makes others cringe. That's okay because RUSH was never a populist band in the first place. They formed their little niche in the rock world, yet they never quite attained the kind of popularity enjoyed by other bands of their ilk, such as Led Zeppelin, Yes, Van Halen, et, al. Hence, they have enjoyed a sort of cult status among their fans, who see RUSH as modern-day philosophers who just happen to play rock music. So, it was with this knowledge that I watched the "RUSH in RIO" DVD concert. The thought that prevailed in my mind was about the unadulterated joy and excitement of the masses of Brazilian fans watching the show. This was the first time a Rio audience has seen a RUSH concert in the nearly 30 year existence of the band, and it seems like that 30 years of pent up energy spills out all at once! Fortunately, someone decided to film this! I guarantee you. No matter how many RUSH concerts you have seen, you have NEVER seen fans react to the band like they did in Brazil. NEVER. I sat in shock watching the thousands of bouncing Brazilians gleefully singing along to "YYZ," which Neil Peart aptly reminds fans in the package's liner note, IS AN INSTRUMENTAL! How do you sing to an instrumental, you might ask? Well, my dear RUSH fan, you will find out how when you get this DVD. Whether you are an elder RUSH fan or you are new to their brand of rock n' think music, this DVD concert will amaze you, it will entertain you, and it will rivet you. I'm American, and as I watched the Brazilians going wild for "Tom Sawyer" and "Spirit of Radio," I looked over at my brother, smiled and said, "We [Americans] really suck, don't we?" Seeing how the Rio crowd reacts to the band, who had never visited Rio before in their near 30 year history, it is clear that next to the Brazilian RUSH fans, all others must fall behind in sheer enthusiasm. Watch this DVD and tell me that North American rock audiences aren't COMPLETELY lame. The Brazilians know how to party, and the band feeds off that energy like kids being given spoonfuls of sugar before bedtime. It is a fabulous moment in the band's history. You WILL enjoy this DVD, but be forewarned; The Brazilian message to all other RUSH fans of the world is this: "WE HAVE ASSUMED CONTROL! WE HAVE ASSUMED CONTROL. WE HAVE ASSUMED CONTROL!"
Rating: Summary: No it's not perfect. It's live! Review: For some reason I start reading the poor reviews of just about any consumer item I am researching. I want to know what people don't like, I already know what the do like. That rule held here with Rush In Rio. A long time Rush fan who has been not so much critical of the band but realistic in what they are doing at particular times in thier career - Not every project is going to be everything to everbody - This is the nature of art, good art. Yup, rock music is an art form. I'm sure that's written somewhwere by someone who's important or smart. I don't know how many Rush albums I have listend to and immediately said "that's crap", "what the ?*&%$ are they doing", etc., and then the disc (album, tape, 8-track) winds up not leaving the sound portal for numerous plays, ultimately evoking some sort awe, wonder or simple respect for the musical chances taken and the musicianship. Quality, attention to the craft. This is one aspect of Rush.....digression. The knock on this DVD I kept reading was related to sound quality and then a few comments about imperfections in recording or performance. So I was a little apprehensive after I made my, ehem, Christmas request. After a few listens there is no dissapointment. No disillusionment. No return. No refund. This is a live performance. This is a very good live performance. No, the sound isn't perfect but it is not by any means bad or poor. The crowd is present in the mix but their enthusiasm is kind of nice. The video is good and most importnat the band was playing well. Most importmat to me is that this is a live performance. It is not going to be perfect. I honestly want to see and hear mistakes and there are very few! If you want to watch an energetic musical performance by good rock musicians, regardless of age, you'll want to watch this DVD. If you are a Rush fan it's simply a no-brainer. All performaces are very good but I have to add a little blurb about Neil Peart (drummer): He has simply gotten better with age. (I think) He grooves a little more, he chooses notes and spaces a little better and he plays in a more musical manner.
